IT Computer Rebuild

What is a rebuild?

  • A rebuild is a process whereby your computer's operating system (e.g., Windows 7/8, Mac OSX) is reinstalled so it is returned to the same state as when you first purchased it.
  • Your data is backed up to a secure server.  The operating system is reinstalled and your data is then restored.
  • The fee for a rebuild is $75 fee and is payable upon successful completion.  This fee includes use of a laptop repair loaner while your device is being rebuilt.

Why do I need a rebuild?

A rebuild is a recommended way to resolve the following issues:

  • Blue screens (BSOD) related to software
  • Operating system problems
  • Viruses
  • Slow computer
  • New blank hard drive purchased

Will my data be backed up? ~ Show Answer

IT makes every effort within our capabilities to back up your data.  This includes documents, music, pictures, videos, etc.  There are however some circumstances where IT is unable to back up data, including but not limited to:

  • Corrupt or unreadable hard-drive
  • Corrupt data
  • Unsaved files
  • Other hardware failures that would cause the data to be unreadable

Will a rebuild fix my hard drive? ~ Show Answer

A rebuild is intended to resolve software-related issues.  A rebuild will not resolve hardware malfunctions, such as a failing hard drive.  In the event of a failing hard drive on an out of warranty computer, you can purchase a new hard drive and IT can guide you through the installation of the new hard drive before starting the rebuild process.

How long does a rebuild take? ~ Show Answer

IT handles most requests on a first-come first-serve basis.  In addition, the length of time a rebuild takes is dependent on how much data you have to back up, what operating system is being re-installed, and the possibility of complications that could arise during the rebuild.  Complications include:

  • Determination of hardware issues
  • Corrupt or unreadable data

Generally speaking, allow for 4-5 business days for a rebuild.  You can also contact IT for an update on your rebuild at any time.

Will my software, such as Microsoft Office, be installed? ~ Show Answer

IT will install Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Java, and if requested, iTunes.

Microsoft Office can be installed if valid Microsoft installable media (discs or download) are provided.  A valid Microsoft Office product key must also be provided.

When possible, IT will be happy to install any other software upon request if valid media (discs or download) and product keys are provided.
