Windows XP Laptop & Desktop Network Registration

BU Secure Wireless Registration ~ Show Information

  1. Ensure that you are in a wireless location
  2. Click the Wireless Icon in the system tray (by the clock in the lower right)
  3. In the list of networks, click BU Secure Wireless, then click Connect
  4. You will see a message that Windows cannot connect to the network
  5. Click Change advanced settings on the left side of the Wireless Connection window then click the Wireless Network tab
  6. Double-click BU Secure Wireless in the preferred networks list then click the Authentication tab
  7. Set the EAP type to Protected EAP (PEAP)
  8. Click the Properties button underneath EAP type
  9. Uncheck the box for Validate server certificate
  10. Check the box for Enable Fast Reconnect then click Configure
  11. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows login name
  12. Click OK in each of the settings windows until you are back to the desktop
  13. Click the Balloon that appears prompting for Additional Information...
  14. Enter your Butler username and password. The domain is BUTLER.
  15. You should now have Internet access

(If your computer does not have wireless) BU Secure Wired Registration ~ Show Information

  1. Make sure your computer is plugged into a RED network port
  2. Click Start Menu and type Services  and then press Enter
  3. Scroll down in this list and double click the Wired AutoConfig service
  4. Change the Startup type to Automatic and click Start. The service status should change to started.
  5. Click OK then close the Services window
  6. Click Start and select Control Panel
  7. Select Manage Network Connections
  8. Right click Local Area Connection and select properties
  9. Click the Authentication tab
  10. Ensure the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication box is checked
  11. Ensure the Network authentication method is set to PEAP
  12. Click the Settings button
  13. Click the Configure button and uncheck the box next to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password
  14. Click OK
  15. Click OK again
  16. Click OK  again
  17. Right click Local Area Connection and select Disable
  18. Right click Local Area Connection  and select Enable
  19. Click the Balloon that appears prompting for Additional Information...
  20. Enter your Butler username and password. The domain is BUTLER.
  21. Click OK
  22. You should now have Internet access

Creating a Shortcut to BUfiles on your Desktop ~ Show Information

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon, located on either the Desktop or the Start Menu, and select "Map Network Drive…"
  2. From the Map Network Drive window select H as the letter you would like to represent the drive
  3. For the Folder field, type \\bufiles\User\username, where username will be your Butler username
  4. Check the box that says "Reconnect at login"
  5. Click finish and enter your Butler credentials in the box that pops up. Make sure you enter your username like so: BUTLER\username

Connecting to BU Guest/Open Wireless ~ Show Information

  1. Ensure that you are in a wireless location
  2. Click the Wireless Icon in the system tray (by the clock in the lower right)
  3. In the list of networks, click BU Guest/Open Wireless, then click Connect
  4. A screen will appear in your internet browser with username and password fields, as well as two links. Click on the I Don't Have a Butler Account - Create a Guest Account link.
  5. Enter the required information and click Submit
  6. The page will confirm that your account has been successfully created. Make a note of your username and password. These appear below along with the information you entered on the previous page.
  7. When you have your information ready, click on the button labeled I have my username and password, take me to the log in screen
  8. Enter your username and password. Click Log In.
  9. The Butler University Computer Use Policy appears. Once you have read the policy, indicate your acceptance by checking the Accept the terms and conditions box, then click Accept.
  10. An Active-X download may take a few seconds. You may also see a notification that your IP Address is being renewed.
  11. Once completed, you should now have Internet access
