Windows 8 Laptop & Desktop Network Registration

BU Secure Wireless Registration ~ Show Information

  1. On the Start screen, move your mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen. Click the Settings gear in the sidebar menu that appears.
  2. Click on the wireless bars icon. It should be labeled "Available".
  3. Under Wi-Fi, select BU Secure Wireless
  4. Click Connect
  5. Enter your Butler username and password if prompted, then click OK
  6. You should now have Internet access

(If your computer does not have wireless) BU Secure Wired Registration ~ Show Information

  1. Make sure your computer is plugged into a RED network port
  2. On the Start screen, move your mouse to the bottom right corner and click the Search icon in the sidebar menu that appears.
  3. Type Services  and then press Enter
  4. YOU MUST BE AN ADMINISTRATOR FOR THE NEXT STEP
  5. Scroll down in the list that appears and double click the Wired AutoConfig service
  6. Change the Startup type to Automatic 
  7. Click Start  (if it is grayed out, the service is already started)
  8. Close the Services window
  9. Click the Start Menu and type view network connections, then press Enter
  10. Right click Local Area Connection and select Properties
  11. Click the Authentication tab
  12. Ensure the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication box is checked
  13. Ensure the Network authentication method is set to PEAP
  14. Click the Settings button
  15. Click the Configure button. Make sure the box next to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password is unchecked.
  16. Click OK
  17. Click OK again
  18. Select Additional Settings...
  19. Ensure that the Specify Authentication Mode box is checked and that User Authentication is selected
  20. Click OK
  21. Click OK again
  22. Right click Local Area Connection and select Disable
  23. Right click Local Area Connection   and select Enable
  24. On the Start screen, move your mouse to the bottom right corner and click the Settings gear in the sidebar menu that appears.
  25. Click on the computer/ethernet cord icon.
  26. Under Connections, select butler.edu
  27. Click Connect
  28. Enter your Butler username and password if prompted. The domain is BUTLER.
  29. Click OK
  30. You should now have Internet access

Creating a Shortcut to BUfiles on your Desktop ~ Show Information

  1. On the Start screen, click on the Desktop tile
  2. Click on Computer
  3. Select "Map Network Drive…" in the standard toolbar
  4. From the Map Network Drive window, select H as the letter you would like to represent the drive
  5. For the Folder field, type \\bufiles\User\username, where username will be your Butler username
  6. Check the box that says "Reconnect at login"
  7. Click Finish and enter your Butler credentials in the box that pops up

Connecting to BU Guest/Open Wireless ~ Show Information

  1. On the Start screen, move your mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen. Click the Settings gear in the sidebar menu that appears.
  2. Click on the wireless bars icon. It should be labeled "Available".
  3. Under Wi-Fi, select BU Guest/Open Wireless
  4. Click Connect
  5. A screen will appear in your internet browser with username and password fields, as well as two links. Click on the I Don't Have a Butler Account - Create a Guest Account link.
  6. Enter the required information and click Submit
  7. The page will confirm that your account has been successfully created. Click Log In. (You will receive an email with your username and password as well for future reference.)
  8. You should now have Internet access
