Mac Laptop & Desktop Network Registration

BU Secure Wireless Registration ~ Show Information

  1. Ensure that you are in a wireless location
  2. Click the Wi-Fi/Airport Menu  (next to the speaker icon) and select BU Secure Wireless
  3. Enter your Butler username and password, leave the 802.1x/Mode field set to Automatic and ensure Remember this Network is checked
  4. Click OK
  5. If your keychain asks to store your password, click Always Allow
    • On OS X 10.6, 10.7, 10.8: click Continue, enter your computer password when prompted, and click OK/Update Mac Settings.
    • On OS X 10.5: if a security warning appears, click  Show Certificate, click GlobalSign Root CA, click the checkbox for Always Trust, and then click  Continue.
  6. Click the Wi-Fi/Airport Menu again and select Open Network Preferences
  7. Select Wi-Fi, then click the Advanced button
  8. In the Preferred Networks list, move BU Secure Wireless to the top of the list by dragging it to the top. It will be near the bottom of the list since it was the network most recently added.
  9. Click OK, then click Apply, then close the Network Preferences window
  10. You should now have Internet access

(If your computer does not have wireless) BU Secure Wired Registration ~ Show Information

  1. Plug your computer into a RED network port
  2. You should see an 802.1x Authentication prompt
  3. Enter your Butler username and password then click OK (If you do not see the 802.1x prompt, contact the Help Desk)
  4. You should now have Internet access

Creating a Shortcut to BUfiles on your Mac ~ Show Information

  1. In the Finder, click on the Go menu and select Connect to Server…
  2. To access your personal folder on BUfiles, enter "afp://bufiles/User/username" (without quotes, substitute your username, path is cAsE sEnSiTiVe) into the "Server Address" field
  3. The authentication dialog will appear. Enter your Butler username and password, and then click Connect
  4. The share will be mounted in the Finder. The share will appear in different ways depending on which server you are accessing.
  5. A shared drive will appear on your desktop, labeled "User." A folder will open in the Finder, allowing you to access your files. Please note that if you accidentally close this window, you can quickly access it again by opening the "Go" menu in the finder and choosing it from the list of "Recent Folders".
  6. Download the BUfiles Shortcut Utility
  7. Open the mounted drive and run the applet
  8. Enter your Butler username into the dialog box. If you already told your Mac to remember your BUfiles password, then you will not be prompted to enter credentials, but otherwise you will be.

Your BUfiles folder will appear on your desktop, and you can delete the shortcut utility and drive.

Connecting to BU Guest/Open Wireless ~ Show Information

  1. Ensure that you are in a wireless location
  2. Click the Airport Menu  (next to the speaker icon) and select BU Guest/Open Wireless
  3. A screen will appear in your internet browser with username and password fields, as well as two links. Click on the I Don't Have a Butler Account - Create a Guest Account link.
  4. Enter the required information and click Submit
  5. The page will confirm that your account has been successfully created. Click Log In. (You will receive an email with your username and password as well for future reference.)
  6. You should now have Internet access
