Job Description

This 10-month appointment is responsible for Butler University's Recreation Department marketing and communications.  The position reports to the Director of Recreation and works with departmental professional programming staff (Challenge Education, Intramural Sports, Fitness, HRC Operations, and Aquatics) to effectively promote the wide variety of programs and services offered.

Title: Marketing & Communications Intern


  • Hiring and supervising of 1-2 part-time student marketing personnel
  • Schedule and facilitate regular marketing meetings with staff to discuss specific marketing strategies and tasks
  • Maintain department brand and overall creative image including design, production, and oversight of materials
  • Coordinate creation and distribution of all marketing materials within the Health & Recreation Complex and targeted campus facilities and groups
  • Manage and maintain department website including structure, strategy, measure analytics, and future tactics
  • Oversee department social media presence including strategy and schedule
  • Coordinate on and off-site program/event promotions at table sessions, resource fairs, and the like
  • Develop campus-wide network of facilities and constituents that further supports Recreation's marketing efforts
  • Oversee digital marketing content
  • Assist staff in presentation of various in-service programs and reports
  • Oversee email marketing efforts including eLetters to students and members as well as weekly Butler Connection email submissions
  • Stay up to date on the latest marketing trends and technology


  • 25 hours/week (flexible office hours depending on workload, time of year, etc.)
  • Start date on or around July 1, 2014 through April 30, 2015. This time frame is somewhat negotiable depending on preferred candidate's availability.

Qualifications Required/Preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree or at least 2 years' experience in graphic design, interactive media, communications, advertising, or related field
  • Skilled in writing communications materials for a wide variety of audiences in a professional, clear manner using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and proofreading
  • Demonstrated skill in making oral and written presentations through various media formats
  • Knowledge of web graphic presentation, image manipulation and software; PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign or similar programs
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Familiarity with young adult culture including an understanding of optimal experience for a student on mobile web, apps, messaging, and video
  • Demonstrated ability to produce basic video productions
