American Red Cross Safety Courses

Butler University Department of Recreation is offering Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens courses open to all Butler students and the community. Registration forms can be found under the links below. Limit of 10 people/course.


Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course

If you're at least 16 years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety instructor. Learn to teach children and adults to swim, and give water safety presentations to kids and their parents. It's a fun and meaningful job that's in high demand. Plus, Red Cross certification is recognized nationwide so you can work anywhere in the United States.  Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) is included in this course.

Become certified to teach the following:  Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, Longfellow's WHALE Tales, Water safety courses and presentations


  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Swim 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke.
  • Swim 15 yards of butterfly
  • Float on back for 1 minute
  • Tread water for 1 minute

Course Length:   FIT: 4 hours, WSI: 31 hours

Lifeguard Training

Fall Semester Course Dates:  October 20-30, 6:00p-9:00p (Monday-Thursday) and October 25, 9:00a-12:00p

  • Registration Deadline: October 13, 2014

Spring Semester Course Dates: February 16-26 6:00p-9:00p (Monday-Thursday) and February 21, 9:00a-12:00p

  • Registration Deadline: January 30, 2015


Learn Lifesaving Skills. This American Red Cross lifeguarding course will provide necessary minimum skills to serve as a non-surf lifeguard. Other areas that lifeguarding will cover are:

  • CPR/AED For The Professional Rescuer
  • Preventing Disease Transmission (PDT)
  • First Aid
  • Spinal Management
  • Recognizing Life Threatening Situations
  • Emergency Action Plan


  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • Must swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl with rhythmic breathing for 100 yards, breaststroke for 100 yards, and either breaststroke or front crawl for 300 yards
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 ft, retrieve a 10 lb brick, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick in 1:20.

Course Length: 30 hours

Cost: $150

Need to purchase for class: ARC Lifeguard Manual and pocket mask. Must have these by start of course and bring with you every day.

Lifeguard Review

Lifeguard Review consists of a review of the skills, performing all lifeguarding/CPR/AED-Pro/First Aid skills accurately and passing the written exam with at least an 80%.

Professional Rescuer Course

Learn the skills professional rescuers use to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. Upon successful completion of this course, participants receive American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (2 yr.), First Aid (2 yr.) and Blood Borne Pathogens (1 yr.) certifications. This course is intended for healthcare providers (pharmacy, physician assistant students, etc.)

Cost: $75

Registration Deadline: One week prior to class date

  • Monday/Wednesday, September 8/10, 5pm - 8pm
  • Saturday, September 20, 9am - 3pm
  • Tuesday/Thursday, October 7/9, 6pm - 9pm
  • Monday/Wednesday, November 10/12, 5pm - 8pm
  • Saturday, December 6 from 9am - 3pm
