Academic Affairs is searching for a newly-created Director level staff position. The area is currently unnamed, and an initial responsibility of this Director will be to develop the name and integrate the functional areas of the Honors Program, Post-Graduate Studies, in addition to all services for fellowships, scholarships, and grants. Candidates are sought who have a terminal degree and a minimum of 2 years of full-time teaching experience, with preference given to those with five or more years, at the collegiate level. This position requires skills in budget management, supervision of professional level and administrative staff, excellent written and verbal communication, and both individual student advising and overseeing collaborative honors thesis work between students and faculty.

With the completion of a $154 million fundraising campaign and implementation of a new strategic plan, Butler University, which combines liberal arts and professional studies in a thriving urban setting, is poised to strengthen its position as a leading masters comprehensive university. We invite nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs , is the principal academic and administrative leader of the college, and oversees fourteen departments comprised of 150 full-time faculty, as well as allied academic programs and their staffs.

Responsibilities and Desired Characteristics

The Dean must be a leader who will guide the academic direction of our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which enjoys an established and growing reputation for academic excellence. Responsibilities include maintaining and strengthening the quality of programs and faculty, and working with the provost and deans of the other Butler colleges to help fulfill the university’s educational mission. The university is seeking candidates who will:

Support and promote the excellence of faculty in teaching, service and scholarship

Champion and promote the Liberal Arts tradition to diverse constituencies, both on and off campus

  • Model servant leadership, equanimity, geniality, composure, and self-possession
  • Address challenges creatively and innovatively
  • Listen and communicate effectively
  • Value pedagogical innovation and support diverse educational opportunities (e.g. study abroad)
  • Lead collaboratively and promote a culture of transparency and openness
  • Cultivate strategies to attract, develop, and retain talented and diverse students, faculty and staff
  • Identify and obtain external funding and support for institutional initiatives
  • Maintain cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships with local, regional, national, and international constituencies, as well as with other groups within the university.

Expected credentials are:

  • A terminal degree in any of the disciplines in the college
  • A record of excellence in teaching and scholarship
  • Significant administrative experience, including responsibility for budgeting, program/curricular development, and personnel/facilities management.

The Dean reports directly to the Provost, is the principal academic and administrative officer of the College, and is responsible for academic and artistic programs, financial planning, and the daily operations of the College in consultation with its faculty and staff. Combining conservatory-style programs with a curriculum rich in the liberal arts, the Jordan College of Fine Arts is the home of nationally and internationally recognized undergraduate programs in music, dance, theatre, media arts, visual arts, and arts administration, and graduate programs in music. The Dept of Dance, School of Music, and Dept of Theatre are accredited institutional members of their respective national associations, NASD, NASM, and NAST. ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, ADVANCEMENT RESEARCH
We seek an experienced professional to coordinate the day-to-day prospect research operations of Constituent Services. Key responsibilities include completing requests for research that demonstrate commitment to a consistent, accurate and relevant research product, supporting a comprehensive prospect identification plan, supporting a document imaging program, and commitment to professional growth.

Position requires a well developed customer-service orientation, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple deadlines at one time. Proficiency in accurately identifying, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating information on university constituents and prospects, coupled with demonstrated ability in written and verbal communication are essential. S/he should have mastery of the APRA International Research Fundamentals Skills Set. An undergraduate degree is required. Candidates with three or more years of successful prospect research experience and experience in college/university advancement preferred. Ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential and professional manner required.
