Graduation Honors
Butler University awards three levels of general
university honors and three levels of departmental
honors.
NOTE: To be eligible for any kind of graduation
honors, University or Departmental, a student must have completed
at least 60 hours of credit for grade at Butler University.
Transfer students who will graduate with less than 60 hours at
Butler are not eligible for honors.
University Honors
University Honors, also known as Latin Honors, are awarded as
follows:
Cum Laude
A Butler cumulative grade point average of 3.70 or both an average
of 3.50 and satisfactory completion of the University Honors
Program, including a thesis
Magna Cum Laude
A Butler cumulative grade point average of 3.70 and satisfactory
completion of the University Honors Program, including a thesis
Summa Cum Laude
A Butler cumulative grade point average of 3.90 and satisfactory
completion of the University Honors Program, including a thesis
Departmental Honors
Departmental Honors are overseen by the Honors Program. The
purpose of departmental honors is to reward students for
exceptional achievement within their major. Departmental honors are
awarded at graduation. A student need not complete the Honors
Program in order to be awarded honors in his or her major. Students
are nominated for departmental honors by the head of the department
of their academic major or, in some cases, by the dean of their
college. The criteria for departmental honors are as follows:
Honors
A 3.600 GPA in the academic major. COB students must also earn at
least a 3.600 GPA in required COB courses.
High Honors
A 3.700 GPA academic major and satisfactory completion of a thesis
approved by the department and the University Honors Program OR
successful completion of a comprehensive examination in the major
subject. COB students must also earn at least a 3.700 GPA in
required COB courses.
Highest Honors
A 3.800 GPA in the academic major and successful completion of an
honors thesis approved by the department and the University Honors
Program Committee AND successful completion of a comprehensive
examination in the major subject. COB students must also earn at
least a 3.800 GPA in required COB courses.
Students who write a thesis for departmental
honors are subject to the same procedures as students who write a
thesis for the Honors Program. Please follow these Thesis Proposal
Guidelines.

The following minimum standards apply to all
Comprehensive Exams:
- be developed and administered by the departments or programs -
i.e., GRE and other external standardized tests are not
appropriate.
- be relevant to the student's coursework in the department.
- include a written component.
- include a component that is common to all students, and that
tests their understanding of core knowledge in the discipline.
- include questions that require synthesis of ideas and
"comprehensive" reflection about a substantial portion of student's
coursework in the department.
