Departmental Honors

Departmental Honors are overseen by the Honors Program. The purpose of departmental honors is to reward students for exceptional achievement within their major. Departmental honors are awarded at graduation. A student need not complete the Honors Program in order to be awarded honors in his or her major. Students are nominated for departmental honors by the head of the department of their academic major or, in some cases, by the dean of their college. The criteria for departmental honors are as follows:

Honors
A 3.600 GPA in the academic major. COB students must also earn at least a 3.600 GPA in required COB courses.

High Honors
A 3.700 GPA academic major and satisfactory completion of a thesis approved by the department and the University Honors Program OR successful completion of a comprehensive examination in the major subject. COB students must also earn at least a 3.700 GPA in required COB courses.

Highest Honors
A 3.800 GPA in the academic major and successful completion of an honors thesis approved by the department and the University Honors Program Committee AND successful completion of a comprehensive examination in the major subject. COB students must also earn at least a 3.800 GPA in required COB courses.

Students who write a thesis for departmental honors are subject to the same procedures as students who write a thesis for the Honors Program. Please follow these Thesis Proposal Guidelines.

The following minimum standards apply to all Comprehensive Exams:

  1. be developed and administered by the departments or programs - i.e., GRE and other external standardized tests are not appropriate.
  2. be relevant to the student's coursework in the department.
  3. include a written component.
  4. include a component that is common to all students, and that tests their understanding of core knowledge in the discipline.
  5. include questions that require synthesis of ideas and "comprehensive" reflection about a substantial portion of student's coursework in the department.
