My Greatest Memory

My greatest memory of Hinkle Fieldhouse was an amazing IHSAA regional tournament game in 1995. It was a beautiful Saturday morning with the sun shining bright through the windows and the old barn was packed to rafters with a standing room only crowd. The game pitted the #1 Ben Davis Giants vs. the #2 Washington Continentals. Emotions were high for this Westside rivalry but it was especially charged since Washington High School was closing at year end. The game was amazing with non-stop back and forth drama with heroics on both sides. Both teams wore purple and white so it was one giant sea of purple throughout Hinkle that morning. As the clock ticked down, Ahmed Bellamy sprinted down the court and pulled up from 35 feet to swish the game winning shot and propel the Ben Davis Giants to the State Championship later that year. As we sat in disbelief at what we had witnessed my 70 year old father said "not sure we are going to see on better than that". Sixteen years later, despite many amazing bulldog victories, that game still sticks out as one I'll never forget.
