This tree is characteristically found growing along stream banks in Indiana, and individuals can be quite large.  The bark is very unusual, multicolored and mottled; it peels away from the trunk in patches.  Upper branches appear white.  Seeds are borne in a compact, globe-shaped, dry fruit.
