Five leaflets comprise each leaf, coming out from a central point like fingers on a hand.The tree has elaborate yellow flowers tinged with red in the early spring.  It is reportedly poisonous to stock, so early farmers sought to eradicate it.  This tree is the source of the nickname for The Ohio State University sports teams.
