I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit always loving to look at plants and liking them even better when I knew their names and understood their biology.  I earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a PhD from the University of Georgia, both in Botany.  For almost 25 years I've been the Director of the Friesner Herbarium of Butler University.  I'm busy now building a digital collection of our 45,000 Indiana specimens.  I've done research on plant demography, taxonomy, conservation and restoration ecology in Carolina Bays in South Carolina, serpentine rock outcrops in California, Florida scrub and Midwestern prairies.  Most recently I've been exploring urban flora in Indianapolis.  I was a charter member and am past-president of the Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society (INPAWS).  I've authored 25 scientific papers and am a frequent contributor to the INPAWS Journal.  I've just started a blog to post timely observations on Indiana's urban plants (http://blogs.butler.edu/indianaplants/).
