Advising

What is Academic Advising?

Academic advising is an educational process in which you and your advisor are partners in meeting established learning outcomes, working toward academic success, and outlining the steps for achieving your personal, academic, and career goals.

When does Academic Advising occur?

As Exploratory majors, your academic advising is much more than simply a matter of selecting courses. You are encouraged to meet early and often with your advisor to develop a partnership. Exploratory advisors work to make sure that they are aware of your interests, to take the time to get to know your personal, academic, and career goals, and to develop a plan with you to achieve those goals.

At Butler University, academic advising provides you, the student, with the opportunity to build a collaborative relationship with your advisor for the following purposes:

  1. To gain assistance in planning your personal, educational, and career goals.
  2. To learn the skills needed for academic success.
  3. To learn how to access the variety of campus resources and services available to you.

Who are the advisors?

Exploratory majors are all advised by Exploratory Advisors. These professional advisors are committed to working with exploring students and are knowledgeable in the wide variety of academic areas, resources, and opportunities available to Exploratory majors. Additionally, for those students who enroll in the Exploratory Studies course, the advisor will also be the instructor for the class. This allows the advisor to further develop the advisor-advisee relationship and better coordinate exploration.
