The Exploratory Studies course, LC103, is the gateway course for the Exploratory Studies major. Decision-making, self-assessment, academic exploration, and career planning are the foundational concepts of LC103. This two credit-hour course encourages you to reflect upon self-assessments, personal values, skills, and decision-making styles before exploring academic resources, which allow you to determine suitable career options.
When you enter the university you may not have a clear understanding of what it means to major in a specific area of study. In fact, there are probably disciplines that you have never encountered. As part of the Exploratory Studies class, you will learn about the wide variety of majors that Butler offers. Additionally, you will meet with faculty members from areas of interest, visit upper level classes and meet students majoring in those classes, research career options, and even conduct job shadows. By exploring a wide range of academic fields, you may find a subject in which to major, minor, or enroll as an elective.
Career development is a life-long process. You will likely find yourself changing careers at multiple times throughout your life. The lessons you learn in the Exploratory Studies class will serve you throughout your life as you continue to grow and adapt to the world around you. Informed decision-making is not just about choosing a major, it is a life skill.
