Roads to Understanding - Multicultural Leadership Roundtable

Roads to Understanding was implemented to facilitate interaction between multicultural students and the surrounding Indianapolis community through a monthly dinner forum with Indianapolis community leaders. Participants in the program include representatives from city and state government, civic and nonprofit organizations, business and community leaders.

Adopt-A-School Program

The Adopt-A-School Program, sponsored by the Black Student Union and Multicultural Affairs, establishes a community partnership throughout the academic year with at-risk students from targeted local high schools. Implemented in 1991, Butler students serve as volunteer mentors for the students participants, providing mentoring and tutorial assistance.

Outstanding Multicultural Student Award

The Outstanding Multicultural Student Award was established to recognize a graduating senior who has maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average, excelled in campus leadership and community service, and served as a role model for multicultural students and peers. This award, along with the annual Black Student Union Awards for Academic Achievement, Service and Participation, Leadership, Athletic Achievement, and Freshmen Achievement, is presented during the annual Senior Recognition Awards Banquet, the culmination of multicultural activities and events during the academic year.

Multicultural Leadership Council

The Multicultural Leadership Council was created in 1994 to provide increased communication and interaction among multicultural student leaders. The council meets on a monthly basis to discuss multicultural student issues and cooperative coordination of programs, activities, and service-learning projects.

Butler Students Teaching Against Racism

Students in the Butler Students Teaching Against Racism (B-STAR) program are actively involved in the celebration of diversity and multicultural awareness within our campus community and the global society. Participants are trained to facilitate informal group dialogues, programs and displays on diversity issues within residential housing units. B-STAR also benefits children in the community through on-campus experiences for K-12 students.

I'm Going To College Program

"I'm Going To College" (IGTCP) is an early intervention program that targets at-risk middle school students from the Indianapolis community. The monthly Saturday morning workshops provide tutoring in English and Math, physical recreation, self-esteem building exercises, learning about college life, guest speakers from various professions, and interaction with current Butler student volunteer mentors to make an exciting and entertaining way to learn.
