January 17-26, 2009: Celebration of Diversity
Distinguished Lecture Series presents "A Long Way Gone: A Story of
Redemption and Hope." An address by Ishmael Beah, best-selling
author and former child soldier from Sierra Leone. The address will
begin at 7:30 p.m. in Clowes Memorial Hall. Admission is free, but

Special Events
January 17: The Peace Learning Center's 11th
Annual "Our Beloved Community Festival" celebrating the life and
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy music, dance, poetry, a
community fair, and a free lunch. The festival will be held from
11a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Christian Theological Seminary, 1100 West
42nd Street. Admission is free. For more information, contact the

January 19: 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr.
Day Celebration, sponsored by the Indiana Historical Society and
the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center. Celebrate America's greatest
Civil Rights Leader and the Civil Rights Movement in Indiana
through an exhibition, performances, crafts, collections, and
films. Butler's Black Student Union will present "A Primer to
Activism," discussion for middle and high school students. The
Celebration will be held from 10 a.m - 5:30 p.m. at the Indiana
History Center, 450 West Ohio Street. For more information, call

January 19: Songs of Freedom and Celebration
Carillon Concert honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., performed by William E. Engle, University Carillonneur.
The concert will begin at 12 noon. in Holcomb Gardens, on the
Butler University campus.
January 20: The Inauguration of Barack Obama,
The 44th President of the United States. Televised coverage of the
inauguration and the inaugural parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. in
the Efroymson Diversity Center, Atherton Union, Room 004.
Refreshments will be served.
January 22: Voices of Deliverance Gospel
Coffeehouse - An evening of music, praise and fellowship, featuring
Butler's Voices of Deliverance Gospel Choir. The concert will begin
at 7 p.m. in Starbucks Coffeehouse, Atherton Union. Co-sponsored by
Student Government Association Program Board and the Voices of
Deliverance Gospel Choir
January 24: Remember! Act! Celebrate! -A Day of
Service. Butler students honor the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. through a day of volunteer service. The collaborative
service project is sponsored by the Butler Volunteer Center and the

January 20: Barack Obama: The Inaugural Edition
(2008). The History Channel documentary that chronicles the
meteoric ascent of the first African-American President of the
United States of America. Viewing time: 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
January 21: King: Mine Eyes Have Seen (2008).
Former President Bill Clinton, Condoleeza Rice, Bono, Harry
Belafonte and other notables in a candid discussion of the impact
of Dr. King's life and legacy on their lives in this History
Channel documentary.
January 22: Martin Luther King Jr.: The Man and
The Dream (2000). A&E Biography that explores how Dr. King's
ideas, thoughts and causes evolved in the face of the rapidly
changing climate of the Civil Rights Movement.
January 23: Boycott (2001), starring Jeffrey
Wright as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. HBO docudrama that chronicles
the Montgomery Bus Boycott and birth of the American Civil Rights
movement.

the Martin Luther King , Jr. Community Center, Indiana Historical

Program, and the Office of Diversity Programs.
