Cynthia Pratt

Cynthia Pratt, Professor of Dance, has been a
faculty member since 1994. She received her B.A. degree in Ballet
from Virginia Interment College and her M.F.A. degree from Temple
University. She has a wide range of performing experiences both in
the United States and Europe in ballet, modern, and jazz companies
including work with Lynn Simonson in New York. In addition, she has
worked on television and in musical reviews with Jonde Mai
Productions in Amsterdam and with numerous independent
choreographers both in New York and in Europe. Ms. Pratt has taught
and choreographed extensively at such institutions as the North
Carolina School of the Arts, New York University, Steps,
Philadanco, the National Ballet Academy Theatre School in
Amsterdam, the Goteborg Ballet Akademien in Gothenburg, Sweden, and
Dance Space Center in New York. She has worked as an auditioner for
the Jacob's Pillow Summer Dance Festival Jazz Project and served as
Artistic Director for several choreographic showcases established
to exhibit the work of new choreographers at Evolving Arts in New
York. Since joining the Butler dance faculty, Ms. Pratt has
worked with many institutions outside of Butler University,
including guest positions at University of Iowa, Virginia Dance
Theater, University of Georgia and National Taiwan University of
the Arts. She is the Guest Choreographer in Residence for
Dance Kaleidoscope, Indiana's premier professional modern company,
and has created many highly acclaimed works for both Dance
Kaleidoscope and for Butler Ballet. Ms. Pratt has been the
recipient of various grants supporting her choreographic work
including being awarded the prestigious Creative Renewal Fellowship
from the Indianapolis Arts Council in both 2003 and 2011. In
2003, Ms. Pratt was the founding Artistic Director of Butler
Chamber Dance, a project-based performance group within the Butler
Dance Department designed to create additional creative
opportunities for students and faculty. Under her direction,
Butler Chamber Dance has performed at Hope College, Wabash College,
Penrod Arts Festival, The Indianapolis Spirit & Place Festival,
and at the Indianapolis Intermedia Festival. Ms. Pratt is a
Certified Movement Analyst and holds a degree from the Laban
Institute for Movement Studies. She teaches Laban Movement
Analysis, Jazz, Ballet Technique, Body Placement, Choreography and
Jazz Teaching Analysis.
