Audition Process and Tips

The Jordan College of Fine Arts dance auditions are structured to give dance candidates the opportunity to be evaluated by all seven full-time teaching faculty. Candidates participate in two ballet technique classes; each at different levels of training. For male dance candidates, one of the two classes will be Men's Ballet Technique. All classes are actual dance courses for enrolled students. Classes are taught by dance faculty and candidates for admission will dance with our students. For female dance candidates, classes are not en pointe.

Female dancers should wear a black, solid color leotard with pink-colored tights, wear flat ballet shoes and hair away from the face. Male dancers should wear black tights, a shirt of solid color that is fitted and ballet shoes.

While on campus for the dance audition, candidates meet with the associate dean of the college, the chair of the department of dance and the assistant director of financial aid. Candidates will also tour the dance facilities and Clowes Memorial Hall. All-campus tours are available. The audition day begins at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 5:00 p.m.

All candidates who audition for the dance program are held to the same standard of excellence independent of his or her chosen degree plan. All candidates are required to audition in person at Butler University one of the dates listed on the application. Videotaped auditions are accepted only from candidates living outside the contiguous 48 states.

Talent Awards

Talent Awards are recommended and determined by the dance faculty and are based on candidates' performance during the audition process. It is important to dress appropriately for an audition and dance your very best during both classes. The dance faculty considers your presentation of technique, approach to the audition materials, aptitude and potential. Apply and audition early for best opportunity.
