Etude
Cloud Border for Etude, by Alexander Borowski
The Ballet Russe Collection
Ballet choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska to music by Johann
Sebastian Bach (excerpts from various Brandenburg Concerti
and from Orchestral Suites.
Decor by Alexander Borowski.
Premiere: Cleveland, OH, October 8, 1943, by the Ballet Russe de
Monte Carlo.
"Neo-clacissism was represented by Bronislava Nijinska's
Etude, the latest incarnation of a ballet...which, in one
form or another, Nijinska had been staging since the 1920s. With
dancers costumed to resemble angelic figures moving in patterns
suggesting the harmony and stars of planets, Etude had
deep personal significance for Nijinska. But audiences never warmed
to it... After seeing a New York performance, Edwin Denby thought
Etude looked 'like evolutions by a recently demilitarized
heavenly host'."
Jack Anderson, The One and Only: The Ballet Russe de Monte
Carlo
The only remnants of Etude in the Butler Ballet's drop
collection are two borders, identical in design, as pictured
above.
