Software Engineering Project Presentation

On Friday, December 8, four pioneers from CSSE 461 demonstrated the Amazing Advising Application (AAA) to interested students, faculty and staff in our department. The four competent software engineers who developed a prototype version of AAA are : Seth Berrier, Stephen Gituku, Jeremy Lanman and Jared Riley. Dr. Linos, their instructor, said "I was impressed by their level of professionalism and technical knowledge". Great job folks! Keep the good work up!

AAA is a web-based, practical software tool that helps students organize their course requirements for graduation. It can be used by students majoring in Computer Science and Software Engineering, Math and Actuarial Science as well as Engineering dual degree students. For more information check their web page at http://euclid.butler.edu/~aaa .

The first advisory board meeting

The first advisory board meeting for the CSSE department was held on December 1, 2000. Three members of the five member advisory board attended: Scott Atkin, director of SAGIAN operations, Beckman Coulter, Inc; Bob Glass, Editor of Journal of Systems and Software; and John Moore, Vice President of Development and CTO of eTapestry.com. Discussions with the department faculty included the software engineering focus of the department, internships for students, approaches to making our program unique, and how to attract high quality students to our program. The meeting was followed by a social hour with students.

ACM Programming Contest

Two teams from the Computer Science and Software Engineering Department participated the 2000 ACM East Central North America Regional Programming Contest at the University of Cincinnati on November 11, 2000. They placed 19th and 53th respectively, out of 101 teams from 53 colleges and universities from Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ontario. This included teams from CS power houses Toronto, Waterloo, Carnegie Mellon, Michigan, and Case Western. The members of the two teams were Nicholas Deibel, Seth Berrier, Stephanie Herman, Jeremy Lanman, Stephen Gituku, and Jim Hodapp. Congratulations! Our best previous showing for this contest was 27th in the Mid-Central Regional, which had about 80 teams, 5 years ago.

New Software Engineering Tools

Dr. Panos Linos has good news for us. His application for a free software license for the Rational Rose Suite has been approved. The Rational Rose Suite is a state-of-the-practice, cutting edge Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) toolset, which automates an industrial-strength, standardized and widely used software development process known as Rational Unified Process (RUP) and Unified Modeling Language (UML). With this software, we can start training our students in CSC361, 461, 473 and others. We are hoping that this will be installed by the beginning of the Spring semester. More information on this software can be found at www.rational.com.
