Butler University Counseling & Consultation Services
Site
Butler University is an independent university
founded in 1855 and widely recognized for its dedication to
teaching and research. A noted academic institution nestled in a
residential area of Indianapolis, Butler's coeducational enrollment
totals 4,512 students. Rooted in traditions of excellence, Butler's
cultural and civic impact is considerable.
Students from nearly every state and 52 foreign countries make
up the 3,897 fulltime undergraduate and 615 graduate and
part-time student body. The University has six degree-granting
colleges-Liberal Arts and Sciences, Education, Communication,
Business Administration, Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Fine
Arts. The 244 fulltime instructional faculty members allow an
undergraduate student-faculty ratio of 11-to-1.
Butler University is fully accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Butler
University Counseling Service is administratively responsible
to the Dean of Student Services and the Vice President for Student
Affairs. The Counseling Service is the only agency on campus
offering clinical services to the undergraduate and graduate
student body. Approximately 200 clients per year have been seen in
recent years, of whom more than half were females in their early
20s. Although clients present with varying degrees of severity,
from adjustment issues to mood disorders and characterological
issues, the Counseling Service strives to address these concerns
within a developmental framework. While many cases are undeniably
complex, we value efforts to avoid pathologizing client behavior
and to focus instead on client resources and strengths as they
negotiate this challenging phase of life.
The most frequent concerns of our clients are conflicts and
difficulties in the areas of anxiety, depression, relationships,
family issues and academics. Other common therapeutic issues
include stress management, substance abuse, trauma recovery,
grief and loss and eating disorders. The Counseling and
Consultation Services is located within the Health and Recreation
Complex on campus. Each intern office is equipped with
digital videotaping equipment and a computer. The center
currently has no fee for service and operates primarily within a
short-term model, although interns have the option to see clients
longer-term if clinically indicated.
Aspire Indiana Site
Aspire Indiana is a not-for-profit comprehensive mental health
center with several offices located throughout central
Indiana. Aspire Indiana offers an array of services
including adult outpatient counseling services, child and
adolescent counseling and case management services, 24 hour crisis
services, drug and alcohol services, community support, and
residential and employment services for chronically mentally ill
clients. Aspire Indiana currently serves over 600,000 persons in
Madison, Hamilton, Boone and northern Marion Counties.
Aspire Indiana is the result of a recent merger between two
Indiana mental health agencies, BehaviorCorp and The Center
for Mental Health. The staff is composed of psychiatrists,
psychologists, social workers, nurses and other mental health
professionals. There are several outpatient offices throughout
Indianapolis and the surrounding area. Interns are typically
assigned to the Willowbrook and Carmel sites. Interns assigned to
the Carmel office, approximately 30 minutes north of the Butler
campus, work with a primarily suburban clientele. The Willowbrook
office, located approximately 15 minutes east of the Butler campus,
serves a more diverse, urban clientele. The intern placed at the
Willowbrook office carries a case load with a greater focus on
treating children and adolescents. For more information, you can
access Aspire Indiana's website at http://www.aspireindiana.org/.
The Charis Center for Eating Disorders
The Charis Center's mission is to provide eating disorders
prevention, early intervention, and treatment for the community at
large and for patients and their families. Located on the
west side of Indianapolis, the Charis Center offers a comprehensive
approach to treatment including medical, psychological, and
nutritional services for patients. Services are provided in
outpatient, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization
settings for children, adolescents, and adults with eating
disorders. The Charis Center provides the only partial
hospitalization program for eating disorders in the state of
Indiana. The Charis Center serves patients in Indiana and the
surrounding states. A Clarian practice, the Charis Center is
part of the Indiana University School of Medicine and members of
the clinical treatment team hold faculty appointments at Indiana
University. A multidisciplinary treatment focus is utilized
in the treatment of eating disorders. The Charis Center
treatment team is comprised of medical doctors specializing in
adolescent medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry as well as
psychologists, dietitians, master's level therapists, and an art
therapist. For more information, you can access the Charis
Center website at http://iuhealth.org/riley/psychiatry/charis-center/.
The Indianapolis Area
Indianapolis is a dynamic city offering a variety of cultural
and recreational opportunities. Professional basketball and
football teams provide seasonal excitement at Conseco Fieldhouse
and the RCA Dome. Residents enjoy a wide variety of restaurants,
concerts and entertainment throughout the community. Cultural
facilities abound, notably Clowes Memorial Hall, a 2,200-seat
performance facility on the Butler campus; the Indianapolis Museum
of Art, the seventh largest in the country, just a few blocks from
Butler; the Indiana Repertory Theater; the Children's Museum, the
largest of its kind in the United States; the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway; Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Deer Creek Music
Center.
The cost of living is reasonable in comparison to other cities
of this size. Residential areas surround both Butler University and
BehaviorCorp, making housing within convenient driving distance a
definite option. The city - with a joint campus of the state's
largest schools (Indiana University - Purdue University at
Indianapolis) and more than a dozen hospitals, five of which are
strictly psychiatric - offers a number of employment
opportunities.
