Internship Service Activities

Butler Counseling and Consultation Services

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is primarily conducted within a short-term model. There is currently no fee for service. The length of therapy, as well as the theoretical orientation employed, will depend on the therapist's judgment, experience and training as well as the presenting issues of the client and his/her situation. Client sessions are video recorded for review in supervision. All supervisors are fully licensed as Health Service Providers in Psychology (HSPP) in the state of Indiana.

Walk-In Service

Students may walk in and be seen by a counselor during open office hours depending on the availability of staff.

On-Call Service

The staff manages an on-call rotation that provides accessibility to services 24 hours/day for faculty, staff and students in the case of campus psychological emergencies. Interns will be on-call with backup from senior staff for one week approximately once every three weeks.

Outreach

Outreach is a vital component of the Counseling and Consultation Service and each intern is expected to be engaged in activity across the campus. Each intern will be responsible for leading an outreach/consultation team which will meet weekly throughout the academic year. Each team will be comprised of up to two master's interns and the pre-doctoral psychology intern. The teams will focus on new program development while continuing existing programs. Other counseling center outreach/consultation activity is open to interns and is strongly encouraged. Consulting with the Black Student Union, the American Language Academy, the International Affairs office and the Alliance (the gay, lesbian and bisexual student group) offers opportunities for cultural diversity.

Residence Hall Liaison

Each intern serves as a liaison to a living unit within the Residence Education office and is involved in providing training and programming for residence hall staff. Ongoing consultation with fraternities and sororities within Greek Affairs is also provided by Center staff.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is offered as client need and therapist time and interest permit. Group formation will require additional effort on the part of the intern as well as potential group members due to scheduling issues and small campus size. Co-leadership of groups is strongly encouraged. Successful group offerings have included personal growth/process groups as well as groups for special populations and concerns such as eating disorders, adult survivors of sexual abuse, grief and loss, and relationship issues.

Master's-Level Trainee Supervision

Interns provide 1 hour/week of individual supervision to a Master's-level intern the first semester and 2 hours/week of individual supervision the second semester of the academic year. Trainees are from graduate programs in counseling and clinical psychology in the surrounding area. Supervision of supervision is provided regularly in a group format and on an individual basis as needed.

Psychological Testing

The MMPI-2 and MCMI-III are the most commonly used assessment instruments at Butler. Other testing may be conducted depending on intern interest and availability of instruments.

Aspire Indiana Clinical Services

Clients at Aspire are assigned by a central intake procedure with consideration for intern interest and expertise. Clients are typically adult outpatients, but may also include children, adolescents, older adults and chronically mentally ill individuals.

Individual Therapy

Short-term therapy is the preferred modality for outpatient treatment. Long-term therapy is offered when clinically indicated. Presenting issues vary but usually include depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, as well as more severe psychological disorders. Interns are expected to videotape their therapy sessions for review in weekly supervision.

Group Therapy

Interns are generally welcome to co-lead ongoing groups with supervisors or other staff members. They may also initiate their own groups. The types of group opportunities vary according to client need.

Psychological Testing

The MMPI-2 and intellectual measures are the most commonly used assessment instruments at Aspire. Other testing is available, but used less frequently. Interns receive supervision on all testing experiences and should expect to complete 5-8 test reports while on internship.

The Charis Center Clinical Services

Individual and Group Therapy

Clients will be drawn from the traditional outpatient setting and partial hospitalization programs for eating disorders.

Staff Consultation

The intern will meet weekly for a multidisciplinary treatment team meeting to discuss clients.  This meeting is attended by all clinical staff of the Charis Center.
