Frequently Asked Questions for the Butler Cultural
Requirement
What is the Butler Cultural Requirement?
Butler University has a rich set of cultural activities in the
form of artistic performances, seminars and public lectures that
collectively comprise one of our most remarkable educational
resources. The aim of the Butler Cultural Requirement is
to engage students in these most valuable and exciting learning
opportunities, and to encourage students to develop habits of
participation in artistic and cultural events that will lead to
lifelong engagement with the creative arts and public intellectual
life.
How many BCR events do I need to attend before I graduate?
Beginning with students entering in fall 2010, all Butler
students must attend eight or more BCR events as part of their
graduation requirements. Transfer students must complete at least
one BCR credit for each semester enrolled at Butler
University.
I transferred into Butler-how many credits do I need?
Transfer students need one credit for each semester they are a
Butler student. If you transfer in at the start of your
sophomore year, for example, you will need to attend 6 BCR
events.
How do I know which events carry BCR credit?

for this symbol:

How do I receive credit for attending a BCR event?
At each event designated as carrying BCR credit, students should
look for the BCR student staff with the BCR symbol-student staff
will be wearing dark blue vests with the BCR logo on it.
In order to receive BCR credit for attending the event,
students must have their ID card scanned by the BCR
representative prior to the start of the
event and after the event (within 15 minutes of
the event's ending). Credit will only be given for
attending the entire event. Each student may only scan their
own ID card.
What if I forget to have my ID card scanned on the way out of
the event?
Students will receive credit for attending the BCR event only if
their ID card is scanned prior to the event and after the
event. If either of those scans is absent, the student will
not receive credit for the event.
How will I know how many events I have attended?
In addition to keeping track of the number of attended events,
the online graduation audit will indicate the number of events you
have attended. Students will be able to access this
information online-expect attendance to appear online 4-6 weeks
after the event.
How many events can I attend in a semester?
There is no limit to the number of events you attend in one
semester. The key is to receive credit for attending eight
events prior to your graduation.
I am a student in JCFA and have expectations to attend artistic
and cultural events. What's the connection?
Students in JCFA also must fulfill those requirements.
Some BCR events will be the same as events you are expected to
attend for JCFA-you may use that one event to count for both.
Please keep in mind, though, that you will need to have your ID
card swiped before and after the event by BCR staff in order to
receive BCR credit. For Jordan College of Fine Arts'
students, please check with the department of your major.
How do I know what events I should attend?
The great variety of cultural, artistic, and intellectual events
will provide you plenty of opportunities to learn and enjoy.
Attend events that are both interesting to you and challenge you,
attend events in areas you know something about, and areas in which
you'd like to learn more. Use this graduation requirement as
a chance to learn, explore, be challenged, think, listen, and
appreciate the richness of the Butler community.
What if I did not complete the BCR?
If you did not attend enough BCR events before the end of the
your final semester at Butler, you will need to make up the number
of events you missed. To make up a BCR event, please click on this
