Butler University is excited to host a wide variety of camps this summer. Below is a comprehensive list.  

Butler Community Arts School Adult Big-Band Workshop 

Conference Dates:  July 13 - 18, 2014 

Description: This week-long, evening workshop is for individuals ages 18 and up with intermediate to advanced instrument skills. Participants are generally adults from all walks of professional life who are not professional musicians, but have continued to maintain their interest in playing. Participants should be able to read music at the intermediate level and, ideally, have had at least some minimal experience in reading jazz or big-band charts. Pre-workshop auditions take place June 29, 2-5pm. The main workshop takes place July 13-18 from 6-9pm. Optional classes in improv and sight-reading are available prior to evening rehearsals.

Age Range: 18+

Butler Community Arts School Bass Camp 

Conference Dates:  June 15 - 20, 2014 

Description: Bass Camp is designed for upright bass players at any playing level with at least one year of prior study on their instrument. Daily camp activities will include classes in stretching and movement, bass technique, master classes and bass chamber ensembles as well as private lessons with camp faculty. Participants will also enjoy a special performance by the Bad Boyz of Bass. Camp will conclude with a finale camper concert. Commuter and residential options available.

Butler Community Arts School Jazz Camp 

Conference Dates:  July 13 - 18, 2014 

Description: Jazz Camp is open to students of all playing levels with at least one year prior study on their particular instrument. No jazz experience is necessary. Camp features combo rehearsals, jazz improvisation, jazz history, instrument-specific master classes and guest artists. The week will culminate in a finale camper concert. This camp is commuter only (9am-5:30pm daily).

Description: Piano Camp 1 is designed for students with at least one year of prior study on piano. All playing levels are welcome; no audition is required. Participants will receive daily private lessons as well as master classes, sessions on theory, ensemble, music history, sight playing, and more. Additional electives may include classes in dance, percussion, improvisation or composition. Residential and commuter options available.

Butler Community Arts School Snare and Tenor Camp

Conference Dates: June 20 - 22, 2014 

Description: All levels of playing are welcome at Snare & Tenor Camp however it is recommended that students have at least two years prior study on snare drum. Marching experience is helpful. This weekend-long camp is designed like a drum-corps camp featuring one-on-one and group instruction with Jeff Queen and Bill Bachman. Participants will receive tailored exercises for improving playing, practice strategies for improving at the fastest rate possible as well as clear plans for achieving the next level of playing. Commuter and residential options available.

Butler Community Arts School Strings Scholars Camp

Conference Dates: June 22 - 26, 2014 

Description: This unique camp is designed for students of violin, viola, cello and upright bass and features Richard Auldon Clark, the conductor of the Butler Symphony Orchestra. All levels of playing are welcome however one year of prior strings study is recommended. Participants will be part of daily orchestra rehearsals and a finale concert with Richard Auldon Clark, daily sessions with Butler strings faculty and students as well as sessions on college readiness. Description: This brand new camp will feature hands-on instruction by Butler Theatre faculty/students in acting, stage movement, voice for the actor, costume, scenic and lighting design, stage management, and playwriting/dramaturgy. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit rehearsals of Heartland Actors' Repertory Theatre as well as gain insight into the college audition/application process. Creative Writing Camp 

Conference Dates: June 16 - 27, 2014 

Description: This camp runs for 2 weeks every summer, June 16-20 and June 23-27. Please pick one week, or some students come both weeks. This camp is directed by Dr. Geoffrey Sharpless, and is taught by Butler University faculty.

iD Tech Camps 

Conference Dates:  June 9 through July 18, 2014

Description: Students take interests further and gain a competitive edge for school, college, and future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Ages 7-17 create video games, mods with Minecraft, C++ and Java programs, and more at weeklong, day, and overnight summer programs. Labs buzz with enthusiasm and laughter, classes are small (only 8 students per instructor), and students work one-on-one with hip, tech-savy instructors.

Nike Swim Camp

Description:  Butler University is hosting one week of Nike Swim Camp for the fourth consecutive summer in 2014. Stroke instruction includes start, turn, and finish work, dryland practice sessions, underwater video analysis, and fun games for all campers.  The camp is designed to help competitive swimmers improve their stroke technique so they can compete at the next level.

Upon arrival at camp, campers are placed in groups with other swimmers having similar abilities and goals. Our camp staff will do their best to accommodate your needs, keeping in consideration your experience and desire to improve.

Highlights Include:

  • Stroke technique and evaluation for all competitive strokes
  • Start and turn skill work and refinement
  • Low camper to staff ratio and 24 hour supervision
  • Underwater videotaping and evaluation by coaches

Nike Tennis Camp

Description:   Nike Tennis Camps welcomes a new overnight summer camp at Butler University this summer. This junior tennis camp is co-directed by Tayo Bailey and Parker Ross, head tennis coaches for Butler University's women's and men's teams. They are offering three sessions of overnight and day camp this summer. Join the fun and elevate your game!


Nike Tennis Camp at Butler University will host one week of Overnight and Day camp for High School students (ages 13-18) followed by two weeks of Day Camp open to players of all abilitiy levels (ages 7-18). This youth tennis camp consists of a core tennis program that includes technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects of tennis for various skill levels. Mornings focus on the technique while afternoons are geared towards match-play situations, giving each camper a positive learning environment to enhance their skills and enjoy the game.

Nike Volleyball CampNike

Description: Campers choose from two sessions depending on their ability level and age.

All Skills: Open to girls and boys, ages 12-18, playing at any skill level. Campers will master the fundamentals, develop proper mechanics and gain valuable game play experience.

Advanced: Open to girls and boys ages 15-18 entering grades 10-12. This intense, challenging program stresses position play, advanced team techniques and physical conditioning. Campers will be expected to participate in a thorough skill evaluation on the first day and will be divided into groups by ability level.
