Low Cost Medication Pocket Guide
This reference is brought to you free of charge, compliments of
the Butler University Drug Information Service. This resource
is designed to increase prescriber awareness of medication costs
and to encourage evidence-based prescribing in a cost-effective
manner. We do not promote any specific drug product, program,
or pharmacy chain.
The medications listed in this book are in the official low-cost
programs offered by the pharmacies listed below. Individual
pharmacy programs may change without notice. The patient
costs for the various programs are as follows:
Programs with no annual fees:
- Kroger Pharmacy offers many generic medications at
$4 for a 1 month supply or $10 for a 3 month supply. Most of their
women's health products are $9 for a 1 month supply and $24 for a 3
month supply.
- Marsh Pharmacy offers several generic medications
at $3.99 for a 1 month supply or $9.99 for a 3 month supply.
Most of their women's health products are $8.99 for a 1 month
supply and $23.99 for a 3 month supply. Additionally, Marsh
provides a one month supply of select prenatal vitamins at no cost
to patients with a valid prescription.
- Target Pharmacy provides many generic medications
at $4 for a 1 month supply or $10 for a 3 month supply. One 8
gram/60 inhalations Ventolin HFA inhaler is available at $9.
Select men's and women's health products are offered at $9 for a
one month supply and $24 for a 3 month supply. One Levitra 20
mg tablet may be purchased for $9 with a valid prescription with a
limit of 10 tablets per guest per month.
- Walmart Pharmacy supplies several generic
medications at $4 for a 1 month supply and $10 for a 3 month
supply. One 8 gram(60 inhalations) Ventolin HFA inhaler is
available for $9. Select men's and women's health products
are available for $9 for a 1 month supply and $24 for a 3 month
supply. One Levitra 20 mg tablet may be purchased at $9 with
a valid prescription with a limit of 10 tablets per customer per
month.
- IU Health retail pharmacies offer many generic
medications at $4 for a 1 month supply and $12 for a 3 month
supply. Select women's health medications are provided at $9
for a 1 month supply and $27 for a 3 month supply. This
program is NOT available for patients with government prescription
plans.
- Meijer Pharmacy offers select antibiotics,
prenatal vitamins, and Metformin for FREE. Eligible
antibiotics include penicillin VK, amoxicillin, ampicillin,
cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/ trimethoprim, and ciprofloxacin at
normal oral dosages for a maximum 14 day supply. Prenatal
Plus, Prenatal AD, Prenatabs RX, and Trinate are the free prenatal
vitamins available. Up to 100 tablets of immediate release
metformin 500, 850, and 1000 mg are also offered at no cost.
All free medications will only be provided with a valid
prescription.
Programs with annual fees:
- CVS pharmacy offers a Health Savings Pass card for
an annual enrollment fee of $15 per person.
Benefits include receiving many generic medications at $11.99 for a
3 month supply and saving 10% (up to $10 off) on a regularly priced
health service or screening provided at a MinuteClinic located in
select CVS stores. Certain women's health products are
provided at $25.99 for a 3 month supply. One 50-ct box of
TRUEtest strips is offered at $29.99 with a limit of 2 boxes per
month. Membership is renewed automatically each year, and the
Health Savings Pass card must be shown at each prescription
purchase and MinuteClinic visit for receipt of benefits.
- Kmart Pharmacy provides cost savings opportunities
to patients who enroll in the Prescription Savings Club for an
annual enrollment fee of $10 per household. Benefits include
availability of select generic medications at $5 for a 1 month
supply and $10-$15 dollars for a 3 month supply. Patients
save 5-35% on all other generic medications and 5-20% on all brand
name medications. Select women's health products are offered
at $5 to $25 for a 1 to 3 month supply. Patients receive a
$10 gift card upon enrollment.
- Walgreens offers the Prescriptions Savings Club
program to patients who pay an annual fee of $20 for individuals or
$35 for families (includes spouse, dependents under the age of 23,
and pets). Valued generic medications are available at $9.99
for a 1 month supply and $12 for a 3 month supply. For other
brand name and generic medications, discounted prices are provided
with the amount of savings depending on drug, dosage, and
supply. Select women's health products are available at $12
for a 1 month supply. The Walgreens card may be used to earn
bonuses when purchasing Walgreens brand products and eligible
photofinishing services. Ten percent of the pre-tax price is
credited to the card, and bonuses are redeemed upon purchase of
applicable products and services. Persons enrolled in
publicly funded health care programs (such as Medicare, Medicaid,
or TRICARE) are ineligible to participate.
Some, but not all, pharmacies will match competitor's prices
when patients specifically ask for a price match. Encourage
patients to ask about price matching programs at their pharmacy of
choice.
