There are jazz combos in the fall semester and jazz ensembles in the spring semester - with each performing a concert at the Jazz Kitchen. Saxophonist and Director of Jazz Studies at Butler University Matt Pivec coordinates this program.

An audition is required for participation in this program. The audition will consist of the following: a prepared piece or ensemble part of your choice, sight-reading, scales, and improvisation on concert B-flat blues (optional for spring ensemble auditions). Drummers will be asked to demonstrate different styles, such as swing, ballad, rock, bossa nova.

Auditions will take place in room 246 of Lilly Hall on the Butler University campus. Applications must be received at least one week prior to audition date to receive priority consideration. Upon receipt of your application, you will receive an email confirmation of your application and a specific audition time. Auditions without receipt of the application, or late applications, will be accepted on a space-available basis.

Please note: It is expected that students will participate in their school's Jazz ensemble or Jazz band, if offered, in addition to the Butler Youth Jazz Program.

Please note tuition is due at the first rehearsal; make checks payable to Butler University.
