Communication skills are vital to
success in our world. Butler University's Department of
Communication Studies assists its students with the acquisition of
liberal arts skills in thinking, speaking, decision making
and problem solving. Traditionally known as
rhetoric (one of the seven liberal arts), oral
communication skills have served students, citizens, professionals
and leaders for over 2000 years.
The department's course offerings demonstrate our desire to
educate students in both the process and the
effects of oral communication. We attempt to engage our
students in the study of all aspects of communication including
public speaking, argumentation, debate, and persuasion. And
students are encouraged to combine principles and theory with
practical experience in a variety of settings, taking advantage of
our location in the country's 12th largest city.
