Summary of the Ceremony

Length of ceremony

Approximately one-and-a-half hours in length.

Procession

The academic procession will start promptly at 2 p.m.  Members of the graduating class will process into Clowes Memorial Hall and be seated upon reaching the reserved area.  Everyone will stand for the national anthem.  Men will remove their caps for the national anthem and put them back on immediately after.

Order of the Degree Conferral

  • Master's Degrees
  • Doctoral Degrees
  • Associate Degrees
  • Bachelors Degrees in liberal arts and sciences, education, business administration, pharmacy and health sciences, fine arts and communication.

Ceremony Procedure

Graduates will be asked to stand and be presented to the president of the University for the conferral of their degrees.  At this point, it is appropriate for graduating students receiving their first degree to change their tassel from the right side to the left of the caps.  Candidates will be ushered to the stage where the president will present the degrees while the deans read the names and, where appropriate, Latin and/or departmental honors.  Graduates walk across the stage, receive their diplomas and return to their seats in the reserved area.  Graduates receiving masters and doctoral degrees will be hooded on stage as they receive their diploma.
