General FAQs

Does the Commencement ceremony occur in the event of inclement weather (thunder, lightning, heavy rain)? ~ Open

How many tickets does each graduate receive? ~ Open

Each graduate is eligible to request up to six tickets for their families and guests (Note: graduates do not need a ticket). Tickets will have particular designations which a graduate may request at the time of ticket reservation: Accessible, Wheelchair Accessible, Companion, ASL Interpreter Seating, and General Admission.  Children requiring a seat will need a ticket.

All graduates will also receive three inclement weather tickets to be used in the event that the ceremony is moved indoors to Clowes Memorial Hall. Additional guests will be directed to designated viewing locations throughout campus. Accessible and wheelchair accessible seating is available at Clowes Memorial Hall and the Atherton Union, Reilly Room. 

Can graduates receive more than the allotted number of tickets to Commencement ~ Open

Students who need additional tickets should ask classmates to order the maximum and share any extra tickets with them. Students need to make these arrangements themselves. No additional tickets can be purchased.

Will there be an indoor viewing location? ~ Open

Butler's auditorium Clowes Memorial Hall will serve as an indoor viewing location.  A live stream of the ceremony will be shown on the projection system. This site will have air conditioning for those guests unable to be seated outdoors.  Clowes seating is not included within the six ticket allotment for graduates and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

How long will the ceremony last? ~ Open

The ceremony traditionally lasts approximately three hours from beginning to end.  In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony may be shortened to exclude student's individual conferral of degrees, and diploma distribution will be moved to the Efroymson Family Gym (formerly known as the West Gym). 

Will I be able to view the ceremony online? ~ Open

The ceremony can be viewed on the Commencement website homepage www.butler.edu/commencement. The live stream will begin as soon as the processional starts and will conclude at the recessional.  

How do I order graduation announcements? ~ Open

Orders will be taken at the Grad Finale event on Thursday, March 27 between 3:00-7:00 p.m. in the Atherton Union, Reilly Room, or you may place your order online through www.jostens.com

Where do I pick up my diploma if I am unable to attend the graduation ceremony? ~ Open

Diplomas will be mailed by the Office of Registration and Records beginning Monday, May 12. 

What size are the diplomas? Are frames available for purchase on campus? ~ Open

Are professional photographs available? ~ Open

Yes, Butler University contracts with a professional photographer, GradImages, to provide photographs of each graduate as they receive their diploma as well as a photo of the graduate in front of a University backdrop.  Proofs of the photos will be emailed to the graduate 3-5 days after the Commencement ceremony.  Orders can be placed on the GradImages website: http://www.gradimages.com/

How do I purchase a Commencement DVD? ~ Open

Butler University contracts with a professional DVD production company, Graduation Nation, to provide a high-quality DVD for purchase.  Please visit the Butler University Graduation Nation online order form for more information.
