Does the Commencement ceremony occur in the event of inclement weather (thunder, lightning, heavy rain)? ~ Open

Inclement Weather Contingency Plan

Butler University administration will monitor the weather the week leading up to commencement. Depending on the severity of the weather, there are several possible ceremony scenarios:

  • The ceremony may continue as scheduled in the Butler Bowl, outdoors. (Free ponchos will be available for every guests seated in the Butler Bowl.)
  • The ceremony may by delayed (by four to six hours) and continue in the Butler Bowl, outdoors. 
  • The ceremony may be moved indoors into Clowes Memorial Hall. 
If the ceremony moves indoors, it will be split into two ceremonies. At each ceremony, students will process with their college, sit together as a class, and cross the stage to receive their own individual diplomas. 
  • The first ceremony would begin at 10:00 a.m. and would feature the following colleges and graduates: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Education, and College of Communication.
  • The second ceremony would begin at 3:00 p.m. and would feature the following colleges and graduates: College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, College of Business and Jordan College of the Arts.

Notification

On Commencement Day, May 10, 2014, the University will notify graduates and guests of the ceremony's location and time through the following vehicles: Butler Twitter accounts (@ButlerU@LevesterJohnson); the University website (www.butler.edu); and the graduating class email listserv. Graduates and guests may also call 317-940-6200 to hear a pre-recorded message about the day's plan. 

 

Are umbrellas allowed at the ceremony? ~ Open

In the case of rain, ponchos will be provided by the University.  Please be considerate of others if you choose to use your umbrella when seated near other Commencement guests. 

How long will the ceremony last? ~ Open

The ceremony traditionally lasts approximately three hours from beginning to end.  In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony may be shortened to exclude student's individual conferral of degrees, and diploma distribution will be moved to the Efroymson Family Gym (formerly known as the West Gym). 

Where do graduates report for the Commencement Ceremony? ~ Open

Graduates assemble in the Efroymson Family Gym (formerly known as the West Gym) located at the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse by 9:00 a.m. Signs will designate each college. Please find the seat with your name on it and sit down; attendance will be taken.  You must be seated by 9:15 a.m. or your name will not be read during the ceremony. Honors cords will be distributed in the gym. (The gym will be unattended during the ceremony, so please give your valuables to a friend or family member before reporting for the procession.) Please turn off your cell phones.

 

In the event of inclement weather, graduates would assemble at the Schrott Center for Performing Arts. 

  • The first ceremony would begin at 10:00 a.m. and would feature the following colleges and graduates: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Education and College of Communication. (assemble time 9:00 a.m.)
  • The second ceremony would begin at 3:00 p.m. and would feature the following colleges and graduates: College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, College of Business and Jordan College of the Arts. (assemble time 2:00 p.m.)

What is appropriate dress for Commencement? ~ Open

Family members and other guests are encouraged to dress comfortably for the weekend, taking into account the ceremony is outdoors. Most guests dress up (in what might be worn to a religious service, for example) for the Baccalaureate service and Commencement ceremony, but there is typically a wide range of attire for those events.

Anyone who will be utilizing a wheelchair accessible, accessible and/or companion ticket will be prohibited from wearing heels, pumps, stilettos, and high heels onto the Butler Bowl turf. Wedges and flats are required as the shoes for this occasion.

May I wear stilettos, heels, pumps, or high heeled shoes onto the Butler Bowl field? ~ Open

Heels, pumps, stilettos, and high heeled shoes are strictly prohibited on the turf of the Butler Bowl. Wedges and flats are required as the shoes for this occasion. Graduates will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony wearing high heel shoes.  

How do I access the Commencement ceremony video? ~ Open

The ceremony video will be posted to the official Butler University YouTube page http://www.youtube.com/user/butleruniversity within a week of the ceremony. 

Is wheelchair rental available? ~ Open

Yes, please visit the Information Tent immediately within the entrance to the Butler Bowl. 

Is water available during the ceremony? ~ Open

Water stations will be available in the Butler Bowl.
