Education Students Help Plan Leadership Camp

Selected Shortridge students will participate in a summer 2010 leadership camp on the Butler campus. College of Education sophomore Chris Beaman is helping plan the camp and contacting other Butler students who will be facilitators mentoring campers.

"I serve on the COE Dean's Advisory Board, and we had mentioned wanting to start a Leadership certification (or minor if possible). This idea helped to fuse with works that were already in progress with the Butler-Shortridge partnership for the summer camp." Beaman, along with fellow students Sarah Morefield, Julie Glenn and Michelle Smith joined Butler and Shortridge faculty in camp planning sessions.

Designed to provide an overnight, college campus experience to the young teen participants, camp activities would include discussion of preassigned readings on race, team building and leadership, a Butler admissions presentation and lunch and an opportunity to try the campus rope climb Challenge Course. A community service activity with the local NAACP chapter is planned on the Saturday following camp.

Beaman was introduced to Shortridge earlier in the 2009-2010 academic year when his "Intro to Middle Grades" course was taught on-site at Shortridge. As part of the class, COE students observed in Shortridge classes and helped out the classroom teachers.

"I loved this experience," Beaman said." I had a fantastic teacher to observe, Ms. Kristi Wolfe. I also developed a great relationship with the Butler-Shortridge liaison, Mark Cosand, who is co-director of the summer camp."
