College of Business - Real Life. Real Business.

Real Life. Real Business.

October 2009

Dear Alumni and Friends,

It's one of my favorite times of the year - autumn. The fall leaves look beautiful on campus, classes are in full swing, and Butler has an undefeated football team at 6-0 (Go Bulldogs!)   It's especially exciting for me as I'm now deep into my second year at Butler. Time sure does fly when you're having fun. We accomplished so much last year and our plans this year are equally ambitious. My goal today is to give you a preview of coming attractions.

Our real life, real business approach to education is a living, breathing, organic process that is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our students and businesses. As a result, we are always in the process of continuous improvement. I'd like to call your attention to two unique experiences that have been developed for our MBA students.

Opportunities in Brazil

Professor Roberto Curci and a group of faculty are working diligently to develop enhanced international experiences for our students. Curci has created a unique course in which MBA students develop a comprehensive evaluation of the international business opportunities within a foreign country for a U.S. client company. The course is being offered for the first time this fall and is focused on Brazil. Future semesters will focus on other BRIC countries. Dr. Curci and a group of MBA students just got back from a one-week intensive study/work trip to Brazil that incorporated an Accelerator client. Talk about real life, real business! I'll keep you updated as the class progresses.

City Market

The MBA Gateway and Capstone Experience courses provide a unique opportunity for the COB to partner with local businesses and provide a real life, real business experience for our students. The COB is currently working with the downtown Indianapolis City Market to provide research to assist in its revitalization efforts. This summer, Gateway students conducted initial research for City Market and this fall, Capstone students are diving even deeper and looking at optimal space utilization and conducting target market and competitor research and analysis.

Outreach and Branding

In addition to curriculum enhancements, the COB has ambitious plans for outreach and branding this year. We are launching a new real life, real business brand that includes a new graphic identity, new brochures (both print and online versions) and a revamped website with enhanced functionality. (Notice the new banner on this newsletter - and the trademark!) The inaugural issue of the new COB magazine will publish next month with both print and online versions. Stay tuned!

As part of our commitment to business and community outreach, the COB is sponsoring key events in the community. The COB recently participated as a headline sponsor for the Techpoint Innovation Summit. The event was held last month at the Indiana Convention Center and I had the honor of introducing the keynote speaker Clayton Christensen, Harvard Business School Professor, author and entrepreneur. In addition, the COB was a sponsor of the WEDO (Women's Economic Development Outreach) Tour in October, which was presented by National City Bank. The COB is also sponsoring events with Vistage, The Alliance, the Economic Club and the 40 Under Forty event (presented by the Indianapolis Business Journal in February).

P.S. Did you hear the good news? Butler has claimed the second position in the Master's Midwest category of the 2010 U.S. News & World Report America's Best Colleges, moving up from fourth place. Butler was also recognized as third in the Midwest for having a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, eighth as a best financial value among Midwest Master's schools, and third in the Midwest for having made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.
