Community

Well-conceived and executed service-learning and co-curricular service opportunities involve community members in the work of the university—educating students to become intelligent, compassionate and active citizens. These activities can augment an intellectually challenging curriculum and aid the effort to inculcate within our students a strong sense of efficacy and empathy. At Butler, we understand service learning and co-curricular service activities as complementary. For more details about service learning, click here.

The Center for Citizenship and Community (CCC) is charged as the primary office for developing, supporting and coordinating service learning as an academic program on our campus. The Center works with community organizations when partnerships can be developed and sustained that are reciprocally beneficial to all partners and the constituents they serve. In general, partnerships work when there is alignment between an organization’s mission and the academic mission of Butler University. The list of partnerships and programming changes and grows depending upon current initiatives.

If you are interested in developing a partnership between your organization and Butler University, please contact Donald Braid at the address below.

Volunteerism and Co-Curricular Service

Volunteerism and co-curricular service often embody similar objectives as service learning but without the framework of the classroom.  Co-curricular service can vary along a broad continuum of commitment. The Office of Volunteerism and Service-Based Education (OVSBE) is charged as the primary office for developing, supporting and coordinating programs of co-curricular service and volunteerism as they relate to student development.
