The Butler Collegian

The Butler Collegian is
constantly pushing the boundaries of news reporting, design and
online content by striving to keep up with innovation within the
industry.
Established in 1886, the newspaper's award-winning print edition
reflects a modern-day Collegian while still maintaining the paper's
historical character. This year the Butler Collegian won four
national Associated Collegiate Press awards, including the
highest award given to student publications: The Pacemaker. The Collegian was also
named Best All-Around Non-Daily
Newspaper for 2011 by the Society of Professional Journalists and
Division II Newspaper of the Year by the Indiana Collegiate Press
Association. In total, the paper earned 36 awards from SPJ and
ICPA, including 14 first place awards.
The newspaper's online counterparts, The Butler Collegian
Online and Collegian TV, feature interactive,
specialized and constantly changing content, drawing in local,
national and international readers. Its standout campus coverage
has received numerous citations by College Media Matters, the
leading student journalism industry blog.
During the 2011 NCAA men's basketball tournament, The Butler
Collegian Online produced groundbreaking coverage of the Bulldogs'
second consecutive historic run to the championship game.
While the paper's managing editor and multimedia editor covered
the atmosphere on campus, a team of Collegian reporters traveled to
both New Orleans and Houston to cover the tournament games, producing
a wealth of game-day, feature and post-game stories, player and
fan photo galleries, and video packages for the site.
The staff's implementation of Storify, a site that lets users
create articles by implementing social media, was groundbreaking in
the reporting of tournament coverage, as Storify was still
operating in a private beta form at the time until its public
launch in late April of 2011.
The online coverage of the championship season produced more
than 26,000 page views on the site, along with prominent national
news outlets excerpting stories written by Collegian staffers.
During the week of the championship game, The Collegian was
excerpted in The Indianapolis Star, USA Today and NBCSports.com.
CNN's iReport contacted The Collegian staff twice about running
their game day coverage on the air.
The Collegian is produced by the student journalists of Butler University. Its staff is
made up of writers and editors from many majors, including
journalism. Each semester, The Collegian staff recruits new
members-all Butler students are encouraged to apply.
Collegian staffers have completed or accepted internships at The Daily Oklahoman, NCAA, National Geographic magazine, The Hill Newspaper (Washington, D.C.),
Wisconsin State Journal, Louisville Magazine, Indianapolis Monthly,
Indianapolis Business Journal, Evansville Courier & Press, The
Jasper Herald, The Elkhart Truth, The Jeffersonville News and
Report and several other local and national outlets. In addition,
they have completed investigative reporting
workshops and their work has been published in national news
outlets, including The New York Times.
Every Wednesday, 2,600 newspapers are distributed across campus
and another 120 are mailed out by subscription. The online version
of the The Collegian is updated daily and received an average of
9,500 unique visits per month in the spring of 2011.
