It is with deep sympathy that we share Dr. Howard George
Baetzhold, 89, died Saturday, July 7.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Howard
returned to Brown University, where he met his wife, Nancy M.
Cheesman, and soon after began their loving and supportive 60-year
marriage.

In 1953, Howard accepted a position in the Butler University
English Department and began his tenured academic career. From 1981
to 1985 Howard served as head of the English Department and was
named the Rebecca Clifton Reade Professor of English Emeritus. He
retired from Butler University in 1988. Not only was he a long-time
professor, he was a generous donor and served on the Ovid Butler
Society Executive Committee for several years.

Howard was a nationally recognized Mark Twain scholar, writing
and editing publications for over 40 years. During his whole life,
Howard fostered a love of water and was a competitive swimmer in
high school and college. He was a member of the British Sub-Aqua
Club of Indiana and, for a time, taught scuba diving at the Jordan
YMCA. Howard continued swimming through the U.S. Masters Swimming
Program well into his 70's.

Howard was a true gentleman with a wonderfully dry sense of humor.
He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Robert D.
Orr. He supported the efforts and activities of his family and is
lovingly remembered by his children Howard K. Baetzhold (Sandy) and
Barbara M. Baetzhold (Brad Drake) and the thousands of students who
were inspired by his knowledge and passion for American
Literature.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, at
6 p.m. in the Johnson Board Room in Robertson
Hall at Butler University. A reception will immediately
follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. Howard
G. Baetzhold to Butler University, 4600 Sunset Lane, Indianapolis,
46208.

Online condolences can be given at <a
Please keep Howard's family in your thoughts and prayers during
this difficult time.

Butler University's fall 2012 J. James Woods Lectures on the
Sciences and Mathematics begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 with
bioethicist Gregory Pence.

All talks in the series begin at 7:30 p.m. and take place in the
Atherton Union Reilly Room. They are free and open to the public
without tickets. For more information, call (317) 940-9269.

Pence is known as one of the founders of bioethics and an
aggressive defender of all cloning research. One of the pioneering
bioethicists in America, Pence has a unique point of view since he
has seen many past prophecies of doom fail and is optimistic about
biotechnology. In a phrase: Pence believes his opponents are
creating a new Age of Darkness.

He is nationally and internationally famous for defending cloning
and genetically modified food against bio-Luddites and Nay-Sayers,
who oppose research on stem cells and cloning. And because of his
views, his talks have been picketed by Greenpeace and anti-cloning
zealots.

His book Who's Afraid of Human Cloning? rigorously attacks
opponents of cloning. His second book on cloning, Cloning After
Dolly: Who's Still Afraid?, argues for the legalization of
artificial wombs and trans-species hybrids. Pence notes that most
people's perception of cloning is based more on science fiction
than science, and that anti-cloners draw false or irrelevant
distinctions based on questions of human dignity and a religious
view of the embryo as a human life. He argues that cloning is
actually a biological imperative: we must develop cloning
technology to survive the next plague.

Butler University's Center for Citizenship and Community (CCC)
is hosting two identical workshops for those interested in working
with immigrants and refugees within English as a New Language (ENL)
programs. The workshops will take place Sept. 5 and
11 in GH 106 from 7:30-8:30
p.m. Whether you're required to attend for an ICR class or
you are interested in giving time to support refugees and
immigrants in the Indianapolis area, come and learn about how to
work with individuals in ENL programs.

These workshops will be taught by Brooke Kandel Cisco, assistant
professor of education and METL director, and Susan Adams,
assistant professor of education. The workshops will provide an
orientation to both interacting with individuals from other
cultures and specific ideas for how to help others learn English as
a new language.

Note: For students enrolled in an ICR/SL course, your professor
may require you to attend one of these workshops. Further, these
workshops are open to students, faculty and staff.
