Dr. Howard Baetzhold

Dr. Baetzhold, a graduate of Brown University and the University
of Wisconsin-Madison, served on the English faculty of Butler
University from 1953-88. In 1981, he became the head of the English
department, which he held until 1985. In 1981 he was also named the
Rebecca Clifton Reade Professor of English Emeritus. Dr. Baetzhold
still contributes to the life of the university as a visiting
lecturer, consultant and ardent arts and sports fan. He is one of
the top scholars on the writing of Mark Twain. In 2001 he was named
the Henry Nash Smith Fellow at the quadrennial conference "in
recognition of lasting contributions to Mark Twain studies." Dr.
Baetzhold has been named a prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash
(1988) by Indiana Gov. Robert D. Orr. Dr. Baetzhold and his wife,
Nancy, have two children, Howard King Baetzhold and Barbara Millard
Baetzhold Miller.
