Carl Doty '53
Robert Todd Duncan Alumni Achievement Award, 2000
Robert Todd Duncan was a pathfinding leader in his competitive
profession, and Carl's entrepreneurial spirit exemplifies the
heights to which Butler alumni aspire.
Carl graduated from Butler University in 1953 with a bachelor's
degree in business accounting. He served as an ROTC commissioned
second lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1954-1956. He
then joined PM&M, one of the "big eight" national accounting
firms.
1960 marked the beginning of Carl's remarkable tenure with R.R.
Donnelly & Sons Company. He started as accounting manager for
the Willard, Ohio plant. In 1965, he became controller at the
Warsaw, Ind., division, and by 1973 was elected vice president
division director of the Warsaw division.
In a startling geographic change, Carl moved to New York City in
1976 when he was named vice president of sales. In 1979 he was
assigned the task of securing a new plant location in the
southeast. In Spartanburg, S.C., Carl selected the start-up team
equipment for a $100 million investment, representing 25 percent of
the company's net worth.
In 1983 he was promoted to group president over sales and
manufacturing for telephone directory printing, and in 1988 he was
elected executive vice president of operations. In 1991 he was
elected president of R.R. Donnelly & Sons Company, which had
risen to be a Fortune 200 company. Carl retired on December 31,
1993.
Carl was voted into RIT/Printing Impressions Hall of Fame in
recognition of his outstanding contributions to the graphic arts
industry. He has served on multiple professional boards over the
years.
He has been married to Jane Beach Doty for 44 years. They have
six children and seven grandchildren.
