About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

The Best Thanksgiving Dinner…EVER.

This Thanksgiving, I celebrated the holiday in a very different way than I usually do.  Usually, I spend my morning being lazy and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and then my family and I go to my cousin’s house for a HUGE family gathering.  All of my Grandma’s brothers and sisters (she is the oldest of 9) and their families comes to Thanksgiving, so it is usually a pretty crowded get-together with tons of food.  This year I was visiting my sister, Natalie, and her husband, John, in Albuquerque over Thanksgiving, so for the first time ever, I got to celebrate with less than 50 people.

This was totally new to me, mostly because for the first time, we had to cook everything.  When you are in a big family, one person makes the turkey, one makes ham, one makes potatoes….and so on.  We obviously didn’t want to sacrifice the quality of our Thanksgiving meal, or the variety of foods we would have, so we made everything that we wanted….which just took a little bit longer.  Some didn’t think that we could pull it off…but we worked ahead (by making pies, rolls, and the turkey the night before) and on the day of we each took a different part of the meal, so it was all ready right on time.

I was really proud of our spread of food…so I took pictures…obviously.  Check them out:

The table setting for our Thanksgiving dinner.
Our apple pie…
My personal favorite – the cheesy potatoes
Baked beans…
Stuffing….
The most delicious turkey…ever.
Perfect rolls…

Somehow, we finished off the turkey, the baked beans, and the cheesy potatoes all before dinner…and of course it was all delicious.  But the real accomplishment of the day was that we made all of this….and my sister and I didn’t hurt each other in any way.  Impressive, huh?

Laundry – The Bane of my Existence

One thing that I absolutely hate about college is doing my laundry.  I actually like and appreciate the act of doing the laundry, but I do everything I can to save money wherever possible, so I mostly don’t like paying to wash clothes.  Every time that I pay 75 cents to wash and 75 cents to dry a load, it feels like someone is robbing me blind of all of my quarters, which are basically gold to a college student.

Since I really dislike paying out that $5 or so in quarters every time I do laundry, I have learned to hold out on my washing until I go home.  This is nice because I don’t have to worry about leaving my clothes in the washer for too long, or about someone taking any of my stuff….but it is also an absolutely EXHAUSTING process.  When I went home for Fall Break, I documented everything so that I could share it with all of you.

First, I pack up all of my dirty clothes, sheets, and towels at school…drag them to my car…and drive home.  Once I arrive home, I enlist the help of my Mom, Dad, and any other individual that happens to be at my house, and we carry everything from my car to the kitchen/laundry room.  I usually park all of my stuff in the kitchen, because it is the first room that you come to in my house, and there is plenty of space to lay out everything I possibly can.

My Laundry – Stage 1

After I get the laundry upstairs, I have to sort it.  This is usually the most depressing part, because it either smells rather bad, or I realize how much stuff I really have, which is completely unreal.

My Laundry – Stage 2

After I sort the laundry, I tackle the washing and drying process, which is pretty time consuming when you have about 6-7 loads to do.  It was a lot more fun this time around though, because my parents just got a new washer and dryer, which is always exciting.  When my mom was teaching me how to use the new washer for the first time, we legitimately stood by the washer for the first 10 minutes, just watching it fill with water and begin to wash.  (We’re not crazy people…I swear.)

Once it is all dry, I have to sort it by type, and get it all packed up to take back to Butler.  I separate everything into piles of t-shirts, jeans, sweatpants, sweatshirts, tank tops, and nice clothes.  When I’m done…there is usually a mountain of clothing on our loveseat in the living room….

My Laundry – Stage 3

I guess I could completely avoid the sheer size of this project if I did laundry more than once every month/month and a half…but I like leaving it until I absolutely HAVE to wash things…since I dislike it so much.  And, usually, this way I don’t have to pay to complete such an annoying and time-consuming task.  There’s always a bright side….

A Breakdown of my Spring Break…

This year for Spring Break I had lots of different options for places to go and people to see.  After some serious consideration of all of the alternatives, I decided to break my Spring Break down into three parts….

  1. Visiting my sister in Bloomington, IL.  She is getting married in July (as I have mentioned previously…here), and after she gets married she is moving to Albuquerque….so this was one of my only chances to go visit her before the wedding/before she moves to New Mexico.
  2. Going to Chicago with my friends Alison and Fran.  We just wanted to go up for a few days…to do something kind of different.  So we went and stayed with Alison’s friend Mike and his family, and he and his friends showed us around the city.
  3. Go home to relax, craft, and get caught up on stuff for school.   After I finished with my midterms last week I started looking at tons of crafting blogs, and I came up with a rather outrageous list of things that I wanted to make over break.  I also have a few books to read…and a ton of resumes and cover letters to work on.  Basically….relaxing won’t happen.

So that is my plan for Spring Break….even though most of it didn’t come about until the very last minute.  But, sometimes the best plans happen this way….and I’m pretty sure that my break is the perfect example of this.  It has been fabulous so far….and I still have another 3 days of break.  So, keep checking back for pictures and stories from each part of my break…and don’t forget to cheer on Butler on Saturday when they play Pittsburgh!  Let’s go Dawgs!

Prospective Student 101

If you are a prospective student….this blog is for you.  If not….keep reading it anyway…I’m sure you will learn something.

I have been talking to a lot of high school seniors that I know who are considering Butler (shoutout to all my HGS girls!)  and I keep telling them all the same thing.  COME VISIT CAMPUS!  Butler offers lots of great opportunities for prospective students to see campus and to get an idea of what life here is like.  There are programs that allow students to shadow current students for a day, and even go to class with them.  There are other programs centered around just touring campus and getting a feel for it.  And there are other programs for students who aren’t seniors yet, but who are starting to think about the whole college thing.  Most importantly, spring is basically here….so campus is starting to emerge from its winter state.  Basically, in the next month, campus will become beautiful again, and people will be outside all day every day….which is really what college is usually like….except for the 3 months a year when it is covered in snow.

My advice to all of you….take advantage of every opportunity you are given to get a feel for the schools that you are considering.  Visiting campus gives you the opportunity to talk to real Butler students, and for you to find out what brought them to campus.  Also, read blogs written by actual students…like this one!  Blogs are a great way to get an inside look into campus life without even going to campus.  So take my advice….visit campus….and educate yourself on what every school has to offer.  You will thank me later!
