About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

When you come to visit Butler…Part IV – Butler Edition

After you have explored Indianapolis….I think that it would round out your trip nicely if you came back to Butler…just for one more look.   Here are some areas on campus that I love…and that you should pay special attention to when you are on your tour….

Atherton Union...

Atherton is basically Butler’s hub for student organizations and student life.  Stop by the Butler Bookstore, our campus Starbucks, or just hang out in one of the building’s many soft spaces…..then you can head to Holcomb Gardens…which makes Butler one of the nation’s most romantic/beautiful campuses.

My favorite place at Butler...Holcomb Pond...

Another part of Holcomb Gardens....

After that…it is only natural that you go to see Hinkle Fieldhouse….since it is rather important in Butler’s history.  This is where Hoosiers was filmed, and it is home to many of our sports teams.  Games at Hinkle are amazing…and definitely second to none.

Hinkle Fieldhouse....

After Hinkle, you should go back to the center of campus, to Star Fountain.  Mostly….because I love Star Fountain….but also because if it is even remotely warm outside, the area around the fountain (also known as the Mall) will be covered with students….and you will be able to see what Butler is really like.  People will be playing different sports on the mall, just laying out, or doing homework…but mostly we just love being able to enjoy our beautiful campus that we love so much…..

Star Fountain....

I hope that you have enjoyed the little guide to visiting Butler that I put together….and that you might take some of my suggestions when you come to visit Butler!

When you come to visit Butler…Part III – Downtown Edition

If you come to campus and you go to Broad Ripple and then you still want to see more of Indianapolis….you should definitely go downtown.  Basically all that you have to do to get to downtown Indy is drive south on Meridian, I-65, or any other road near campus for about 15 minutes, and then you are right in the heart of Indianapolis.  Our downtown area has museums, parks, monuments, shopping, restaurants, and entertainment….basically anything you could ever want/need.

First I would probably have you start at Circle Center Mall….since shopping is always a great way to start out a visit.  Circle Center is a great mall with a little bit of something for everyone…and its rather beautiful too….

The inside of the mall....

One of the main entrances....

Then….after you shop until you can’t shop anymore…I would send you to Monument Circle.  Indianapolis is actually 2nd only to Washington D.C. in having the most monuments inside city limits….which I think is pretty awesome.  At Monument Circle you can always go up in the monument, or visit the little shop area inside it….or you could hang out outside…my personal favorite.  It is a great place to grab lunch and then eat it outside on a nice day…while you people watch of course.

Monument Circle in the daytime...

Monument Circle at night...

And if you still haven’t gotten enough of downtown Indy, you can always go to a Colts game, a Pacers game, a concert, maybe a play at the IRT, the Indy Zoo, or any of the tons of other things that I haven’t mentioned yet that you can do downtown….basically…the opportunities are endless.

When you come to visit Butler…Part II – Broad Ripple Edition

The first place that I would suggest for people to go to before/after a campus visit is definitely Broad Ripple.  It is a very unique, eclectic, and fun area about 10-15 minutes from campus, and it offers so many different things for college students or families.  There is great shopping, great entertainment, and my personal favorite….amazing restaurants.  Now some of them are normal chains like Applebee’s, Jimmy John’s, or Subway….but there are also some amazing places to eat there that only exist in Broad Ripple….like…

Broad Ripple Bagel Deli...they basically have every sandwich you could ever want...on a bagel.

Boogie Burger....their burgers are to die for...and they have amazing garlic fries and ice cream too...it just never ends!

Those are two of my personal favorites in Broad Ripple….but there are plenty of other places to eat too.  Bagel Deli and Boogie Burger are just places that students seem to love…and that are quick and easy to grab as you are going through Broad Ripple.

Entertainment wise there are always fun things happening in Broad Ripple as well…between Crackers Comedy Club, concerts at the Vogue, and a wide variety of bars.  That is what makes Broad Ripple such a young and hip area, all of the different things to do.  There is even a dog park that I will definitely take advantage of once I get a dog someday, so that brings an entirely new feel to the area….since people take their dogs everywhere with them.

Crackers Comedy Club....

Try to stop by Broad Ripple the next time you are in town….or better yet…after your tour when you come visit Butler!  We Butler kids love it….and tend to congregate there rather often…..so you just might see a bunch of students there if you go!

When you come to visit Butler…Part I – Intro

If you are a junior or a senior in high school, you are probably busy doing campus visits right now.  Campus visits are great for seeing buildings on campus and getting a real feel for student life…but it is also important for prospective students to continue their tour on their own – by exploring the area around campus, and seeing what the city has to offer.  So over the course of a few blogs, I will take you through areas on Butler’s campus and off that I think you should visit when you come to Butler for your visit, whether you are making your decision, or just taking a look.

Also….this blog series is actually based off of a class project that I worked on with my friends Kodi, Abby, and Jayne in our Advertising and Promotion Management class (our assignment was to actually come up with a scavenger hunt…so this is a slight variation).  I wanted to share it with all of you, because I thought it was something that would come in handy, and that would be a helpful guide in your college visit process.  So….mad props go to Kodi, Abby, and Jayne…and Dr. Skinner for giving us this assignment.  I hope that it might help you all as you visit Butler, and possibly navigate Indianapolis for the first time.  I’ll be focusing on Broad Ripple, downtown Indy, and Butler’s campus for each of the blogs, and as always, feel free to comment if you have any questions at all!

One of my favorite places on Butler's campus....

Prospective Student 101

If you are a prospective student….this blog is for you.  If not….keep reading it anyway…I’m sure you will learn something.

I have been talking to a lot of high school seniors that I know who are considering Butler (shoutout to all my HGS girls!)  and I keep telling them all the same thing.  COME VISIT CAMPUS!  Butler offers lots of great opportunities for prospective students to see campus and to get an idea of what life here is like.  There are programs that allow students to shadow current students for a day, and even go to class with them.  There are other programs centered around just touring campus and getting a feel for it.  And there are other programs for students who aren’t seniors yet, but who are starting to think about the whole college thing.  Most importantly, spring is basically here….so campus is starting to emerge from its winter state.  Basically, in the next month, campus will become beautiful again, and people will be outside all day every day….which is really what college is usually like….except for the 3 months a year when it is covered in snow.

My advice to all of you….take advantage of every opportunity you are given to get a feel for the schools that you are considering.  Visiting campus gives you the opportunity to talk to real Butler students, and for you to find out what brought them to campus.  Also, read blogs written by actual students…like this one!  Blogs are a great way to get an inside look into campus life without even going to campus.  So take my advice….visit campus….and educate yourself on what every school has to offer.  You will thank me later!

When I visited campus for the first time….

Some of you who read this blog are probably prospective freshmen who are looking at tons of different colleges right now.  Three years ago I was in your place….so I will tell you a little bit about what that was like.

During my college search process, I limited myself to only looking at schools in Indiana for numerous reasons.

  1. It was easier….
  2. I’m from southern Indiana, and I love the Midwest more than anything.
  3. I didn’t want to be too far from home.
  4. I was hoping for certain scholarships that I could only use in Indiana…and I didn’t want to fall in love with a school somewhere else.

The summer before my senior year, I visited Butler….and….dare I say it….I didn’t like it.  It wasn’t the school, the tour, or the people…it just didn’t feel right.  I was completely sold on another school at that point…and I think that I just wasn’t open-minded at all about the whole process.  But, a month later, I visited that other school….and just decided on a whim that it wasn’t the school for me.  (As I’m sure you can tell, I had a very detailed thought process with this.)  So then I decided to give Butler a second chance….and it came back swinging pretty quickly.  I creeped on the blogs, on the website, and especially on the College of Business…because I had also just changed my mind in regards to a major.

I didn’t visit Butler again until January of my senior year, when I attended Butler Business Scholars.  This is a program put on by the College of Business where they invite high school seniors to come to Butler and interview for scholarships.  During that weekend, even though the campus was covered in snow, I completely fell in love, as did my Mom.  I wasn’t with her for most of the time, because there was a part of the program for students and a separate one for parents, but as soon as I saw her afterward, she told me that I HAD to go to Butler.  From that point on I was sold…and I have loved Butler ever since!

So, if you are a prospective freshman…and you haven’t visited Butler yet…go to this website and check out all of the opportunities that you have to see campus.  Just a hint from an insider….come right now…because campus is absolutely BEAUTIFUL in the fall, and right now the weather is rather perfect.  If you are a junior or younger, then you can come in the spring too, because that is my other favorite time on campus.  Not that the winter or summer isn’t that pretty, because it totally is.  It is just that Indiana in the winter or the summer isn’t always pleasant, especially if you don’t enjoy freezing or sweating the whole time.  To encourage you to come to campus now, before we loose all of the leaves…here are some pictures I took last weekend while showing my friend Alison around campus.  :)
