A little glimpse of Butler’s Weather….

If you didn’t know….Butler is in Indiana….in central Indiana. Usually this doesn’t mean much to anyone, but what everyone should know is that Indiana has the strangest weather patterns in the U.S. (That isn’t official, but I think that we do…so it counts.) To give you an idea of how outrageous it is, I will give you a little rundown of the last week’s weather….

February 25 (Friday) – Woke up to a couple of inches of snow…nothing much…but still enough to make me not want to get up and brush off my car to go to the HRC.
February 26 (Saturday) – It warmed up…so the snow melted….
February 27 (Sunday) – Around 8 or 9 p.m. it started raining cats and dogs, so much that it flooded some of the streets on campus and in the area. Then around 1 a.m. that night, the tornado sirens went off….twice. So I was up until around 3:30 a.m….sitting in our first floor hallway with 75 of my sisters….I love them all so much, but that was the last thing that I wanted to be doing right then.

February 28 (Monday) – I went to class with my rain boots on…all ready to wade through the lakes on campus after the previous night’s rain…and there was basically no water on the ground. Yeah…it was weird.
March 1 (Tuesday) – Beautiful day…..
March 2 (Wednesday) – Another beautiful day….
March 3 (Thursday) – It was cold, but sunny and just a beautiful day.
March 4 (Today) – It’s rainy…and not beautiful.

You all should probably know that this isn’t a normal week….but we just happened to have basically every kind of day weather wise in the last week. Some people hate it….but I love it…because you can never get bored with weather that is always changing….so I think it is perfect!

What happens if there is inclement weather?

So on Tuesday when I got up, I checked my Facebook as usual to see if anything exciting and new had happened in the past 6 hours, and I saw a ton of people from home that had posted about the bad weather coming in. I just kind of brushed it off and figured that we would be fine. So I went ahead to my 8 a.m. Marketing class, and as my friend Lindsey and I were walking out of Jordan to get our books for our next class….the tornado sirens started going off. So a professor told everyone not to leave but to go to the basement, so we did. And we sat there….and sat there….and didn’t really know what to do. So eventually we went back upstairs, and when we were walking out the doors…..basically the sky started falling. Well, not really. But it started to rain really hard, and this HUGE group of people coming from Schwitzer were sprinting into Jordan. So we decided not to brave the rain, but to go back inside. So we went to where our next class was supposed to be, just to see if anyone had showed up….and they had. Ugh. But then, we realized that we didn’t have anything for that class, so we would have to brave the elements.

So we were walking outside, and we were almost inside when the sirens went off again….and I just thought of what my Mom would do if she knew that I was outside when sirens were going off. My Mom is serious about storm safety…like really serious. We have numerous “emergency bags” with soup, bottled water, first aid kits, canned fruit, and granola bars ready to go by our basement door at home whenever there is even a slight chance of bad weather. So basically everything that I was doing was wrong in her eyes. We got inside, and then we found out that we weren’t allowed to leave again until the Tornado Warning was over…..so we all got our computers and chilled out together in our “safe area” (which my Mom probably wouldn’t consider safe…especially since she tries to get me to stay home if I’m going to a friend’s house during storm season and they don’t have a basement). Basically everyone was on Facebook all at the same time…which was rather awesome…and before we knew it….the storm had blown over, and we were free to go to class. Ugh. The day started off so promising with the threat of a natural disaster that we just knew we would get out of some class…but it didn’t turn out as we had hoped.

So one of the reasons why my Mom loves to be totally prepared for storms…is because we get a lot of them at home. And they are really destructive. So…here is what happened during one of our last big storms….and what it did/almost did to our house.
