About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

The Beginning of the End…of my Butler Career.

Last semester, I worked so much that I barely had time to study and I hardly even felt like a student.  I was this strange “phantom senior” who was only in my room between 11 p.m. and 7:30 a.m., and who lived out of my plethora of Vera Bradley bags.  Some people would love this kind of schedule…but I couldn’t stand it.  It was like I was living double lives, as a partial “real person” who worked 25+ hours a week, drank coffee, and who went to meetings to talk about things that involved budgets more than $500….and as a partial student who still took 12 credit hours, was overly involved, and lived in a sorority house.  It was a nice little introduction to my future….but I have got to say…I am so glad to be a student again.  I am now in class more than I’m at work, and I love it.  Granted, it is just the second week of school, and I actually have time to study/prepare for each class, but I think that my schedule this semester is going to allow for me to love every minute of my last few months here at Butler…and I couldn’t be happier.

So, in my last semester at Butler, I tried to make sure that I would be making the most of everything… classes, work experience, and campus life.  I’m taking 15 credit hours (which is not a ton, but not an easy load either), all of which I am really excited about.  I get to take my two business capstone courses (one for management and one for marketing), consumer behavior, international marketing, and a leadership & decision-making course for my minor (communication studies).  As far as work goes, I am still blogging, working in Speakers Lab, and I am doing my 4th internship at the Butler Business Accelerator (an on-campus consulting firm).  Even though I am still working 3 jobs, I’m working about half as much as I did last semester, which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL.  Since I am a second semester senior, I am also starting to “phase out” of most of my organizations.  I recently transitioned the new people that are taking over 3 of my past leadership positions, so I am outrageously excited to be a participant in campus activities for the first time in awhile…rather than being in charge.  We will see what I say in about a month, when school is really moving….but for now…I finally am loving senior year.  :)

Semester #7 – Check

Ever since I started college, I have thought that my life could not get any busier, and that the next semester would be so much easier.  But, of course…it never let up…and I think that it actually got worse over time.  I love being busy…but when I look back over the last 7 semesters…I wonder how I ever made it through…

  • Fall 2008 – 17 credit hours, I pledged Alpha Kappa Psi, and I joined the Butler Dance Team
  • Spring 2009 – 17 credit hours, I joined Alpha Phi, and basketball season with the Dance Team was super busy

The 2008-2009 Butler Dance Team

  • Fall 2009 – 19 credit hours, I lived in Alpha Phi for the first time, the Real Business Experience ruled my life, and I started working in Speakers Lab
  • Spring 2010 – 18 credit hours, my Law & Ethics class ruled my life, and I started having leadership positions in clubs
  • Fall 2010 – 16 credit hours, and I’m sure something took up all of my time…I can’t remember what it was….
  • Spring 2011 – 16 credit hours, and I was searching for an internship with every free moment of every day

So this brings us to now, the end of Fall 2011…my 7th semester of college.  I only took 12 hours (which is the lightest load you can take as a full-time student), but I worked 22 hours/week at my internship, and between blogging and working in Speakers Lab I worked an extra 5 hours/week.  Also, when you factor in the time that it took me to drive to my internship every day, you can add on another 7 hours each week, so altogether….I worked around 34 hours every week.  This basically meant that I had no time to spare when I was on campus..or period…because I was either working, or in class.  But now, it is over….and I officially fulfilled my internship requirements!  I never thought that I would, because I had to work for 300 hours throughout the semester, and it took me a LOT longer to do that than I originally thought.  So last week during finals, I worked as much as I could, and I ended up making it to 300 right at the end of the day on the last day of the week.  SUCCESS!

So now…all I have to do is make it through 15 more hours this Spring.  This will be a breeze…I hope?

Back to the harsh reality of my life…

Yesterday, I posted a blog about being excited that the new seasons of all of my favorite TV shows have begun. Today, I have realized that I am truly never going to have time to watch TV…ever again.

Ahh! How terrifying!

Ok, I’m being dramatic….very dramatic.  But for reals…life is about to get crazier than it already is…sooner than I expected.

This week begins my period of hardcore studying that will last about 3 weeks.  Each week, I have at least two big tests/projects/papers, so there goes my free time.  But, when I finish, I will be done with my midterms (for Sales, Retailing, and Health Care Econ), I will have finished my Organizational Analysis paper for my current internship, my Retail Analysis Project, and my group project in Health Care Econ.  To add to all of this, I have my internship, working at Speaker’s Lab, and the normal things that people have to do to live our everyday lives.

I’m probably just realizing this (and slightly freaking out) because I got a flat tire the other day, and even after AAA fixed it, it went flat again.  So I had to call them again, and now I have to go to a tire store to get it fixed…all in the like 2 free hours that I have tomorrow during their normal business hours.  I’m just hoping that after I overcome this little time-wasting bump in the road, I will be able to do homework again and I will start preparing for the 3 weeks of mid-term death.  Maybe I can work on being less dramatic too…but on second thought, I should stick to focusing on one goal at a time.  So I’ll keep being dramatic….life’s more fun this way anyway.

A Day in the Life of Stephanie…Spring 2011 Edition

Now that we are about a month into the semester…I officially have the hang of my schedule.  It took longer than normal this semester because of Snowpocalypse….but now I think I actually understand how it all works…so I will give you a glimpse of my schedule on a random day….enjoy…

  • 8:00 a.m. – Wake up….check Twitter, Facebook, and my email….while eating breakfast.  (At my house we have a hot breakfast every morning…so this is usually french toast sticks and bacon…yum.)
  • 8:30 a.m. – Get ready for class..
  • 9:35 a.m. – Marketing Research…..
  • 11:00 a.m. – Career Planning & Development…..the COB likes to take care of us…and make sure that we know what we are doing with our lives in the future.
  • 12:15 p.m. – Lunch back at Phi…
  • 1:00 p.m. – Check my email…prep for class…and hang out at Starbucks…
  • 2:25 p.m. – Advertising & Promotion Management…basically the best class I have taken at Butler.  It is a great way to spend the afternoon if you ask me.
  • 4:00 p.m. – Work in Speakers Lab…

Hangin out in Speakers Lab....

  • 6:00 p.m. – Dinner….
  • 7:00 p.m. – BUSF meeting…
  • 8:00 p.m. – Study…
  • 9:00 p.m. – AKPsi meeting….
  • 10:00 p.m. – Study until…I fall asleep.

Basically my life is booked solid….and I rarely have time to just chill out….but I like it that way.  At the beginning of the semester when I didn’t have as much to do…I felt lost….and just sat around while I tried to decide what to do with myself.  But by being busy all the time, I make the most of my time….for instance…when I don’t have time to go to the HRC to work out…I do a workout video in my room….and watch my shows on Hulu at the same time.  This morning I caught up on the latest Desperate Housewives this way….and tomorrow I will do Grey’s Anatomy probably.

So that is a glimpse of my life…if you have any questions about student life at Butler, don’t hesitate to ask!

The Fabulous Life….

In college….every day is a little bit different.  But when I was in high school (and even at the beginning of my Freshman year) I wondered what college students do all day…..especially when they aren’t in class.  So, here is a run down of what a typical day is like for me….so that you can have a little bit of an idea of what college life is like.  :)

  • 7:00- My alarm goes off.
  • 7:15- I finally get up…then get ready for class.
  • 7:50- I run to class….because I really don’t want to be late again…..like I usually am.
  • 8:00- Operations Management….
  • 9:00- Religions of the World….
  • 10:00- I go back to my room…where I check my emails and clean up all of my stuff I throw around everywhere.  I like to call this “figuring out my life”, and it has been a rather frequent activity for me in the past month.
  • 11:00- I work in the Speakers Lab
  • 12:00- I eat lunch…..and then usually chill out and talk to people for awhile.
  • 1:00- Once I realize that I really need to do something with my life…I get my stuff together and go to Starbucks.  This way I don’t sit with my computer in my room and watch every TV show that I have missed on Hulu.  Instead, I go to Starbucks where I blog or study….and I usually get distracted by talking to people.  At least it is enjoyable being distracted that way!
  • 3:00- Babysitting time!  A large amount of girls at Butler babysit…since it is a great way to get off campus, get your mind off of school, and make some money while you are doing it!  I like it because it gives me hope for my future…and reminds me that life after college will be great.  Otherwise…I would just want to stay here forever.
  • 6:00- Head back to campus…have dinner…and “figure out my life” again.
  • 7:00- I usually have group meetings around this time…because we tend to always have projects due on Thursday mornings.  Warning:  Butler (especially the College of Business) loves group work.  Yes, it will prep me for my future….but it gets frustrating since you have to do everything with someone else….never alone.  Haha.
  • 9:00- Either I study…or go to a meeting…or I distract myself from studying.
  • 11:00- Meet with girls in my sorority to do a devotional….we have bible study once a week, we pray for our house one morning a month, and we do devotionals together every night at 11.  :)   It either lasts 5 minutes, or as long as 30 minutes.  Completely depending on how much I want to procrastinate, and how talkative we are.
  • 11:30- Either I study….or I distract myself from studying…or my roommates distract me from studying.  One of them likes to “bop” around….and sing…and just be talkative….so she is usually the most successful at that.  But last night we distracted each other by cleaning up our room (that still has Halloween decorations up…and that has decorations from our Homecoming Lawn Decs up as well)….and we helped each other pick out outfits for class.  This was a total first for us….because we aren’t those girls who plan out every bit of every outfit every day…..but we have just decided to start to wear the clothes that we have that we don’t ever wear.  What an idea!
  • 1:00 a.m.- I finally get to sleep…..after I get ready for bed….and try to read for class even though I fall asleep while I do it.

Phew.  So that is a day in my life in a nutshell.  Don’t worry though….I have more than two classes!  My other days are more busy than this one….I just like this one the best!  And since all the leaves are almost gone…I will leave you with this photo from when they were still here….

I love Holcomb Pond.....

One of the best features of Butler…Speakers Lab

In one of my last blogs, I mentioned that I work in the Speakers Lab here at Butler.  I love giving presentations, listening to presentations, and putting together presentations, so it fits kind of perfectly for me!  Speakers Lab is one of many different tutoring services here at Butler, like the Math Lab, Writers Studio, and others.  I personally love our tutoring services, because it gives Butler students an opportunity to share their talents with others, and it allows other Butler students to get help in certain areas.

You might be wondering how Speakers Lab works….so here it is…

  • For certain classes, professors require students to visit Speakers Lab for extra help or practice, and sometimes students will come in on their own.  We tutor students with presentations, speeches, interviews, and anything else that involves speaking.
  • If a student wants/needs to visit Speakers Lab, they make an appointment with us in one of our two rooms.
  • During the visit we cover the requirements of the assignment, what the student wants help on, and what we think needs to be worked on as well.

And….that is about it.  Speakers Lab has always been very helpful for me, and even though I work there, I go in at least once a semester for help on presentations too!  We have a pretty awesome set-up….and we are so fortunate to have a campus that embraces the program as much as they do.  Here are a few extra facts about Speakers Lab…

  • It all started in 1996, with a 3 year grant from Eli Lilly.
  • In 1996, there were only 4 tutors, and throughout the entire year they only had 47 appointments.
  • Now, we have 21 tutors, and the day before we opened Lab, we already had 45 appointments scheduled for the first month.
  • The biggest staff we have ever had was 26 tutors, with 1500 appointments in the entire year.
  • We are the prominent student-run Speakers Lab in the country.

Isn’t that awesome?  I love thinking about how much the program has grown in the past 14 years, and how fortunate I am to be a part of it!  And the best part is, I learn something new every time I work there, which is wonderful.  :)

And We’re Off! A Reintroduction to Steph….

It’s official.  My junior year of college is truly underway.  I had my first test yesterday, my second is tomorrow, and it’s time to start a new year of blogging!  So, just in case you are new to our blogs, here is a little bit about me….

I am Steph, a junior marketing major and communication studies minor here at Butler.  I love being outrageously busy, so in addition to my schoolwork, I am involved in TONS of clubs, and I work 3 different jobs.  Here is the list of my clubs on campus…prepare yourself.  My sorority (I am also a recruitment counselor, so for the next 4 months you won’t know which house I am in!); Butler’s professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi; Phi Eta Sigma, an honor fraternity; Blue Key, an honor society; Scholars for the Advancement of Business Leadership; Butler University Student Foundation; Butler College Democrats; and I think I am joining Butler American Marketing Association this year too!  And about my jobs, I am a blogger, I work in Butler’s Speakers Lab, and this year I babysit for a family who lives just outside of Indy one afternoon each week.  So I am rather busy, but it is a great busy, because I love everything that I do, and I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t!

So since you now know the more “normal” things about me, here are a few random facts that I don’t think I have ever shared on my blog before.

  • I love ketchup.  So much.  I think that ketchup should be one of the main food groups, all by itself.  I eat it on everything, from burgers and fries to barbecued chicken and baked potatoes.  Here are a few photos for you to see how intense my love of ketchup truly is…

All the ketchup I used for my rather small order of fries....

All the ketchup that I put on each individual fry...

  • I have been waiting for this Thursday for the past three months.  It is the season premiers of both The Office and Grey’s Anatomy, and so begins my weekly struggle to decide which show to watch each week since they are on at the same time.
  • I love getting mail, whether it is real mail, e-mail, or even messages on Facebook.  I love it so much….that I have been signing up my school address to receive completely useless mailings and coupons, just so I will have something in my mailbox when I look at it each day.  Don’t feel bad for me though, I’m just impatient that it is taking so long for me to start getting my hometown newspaper and other things I ususally get in the mail.
