About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

My Return to the Busy Life…

The last two weeks of my life have been fabulous.  I slept till at least 9 almost every day (usually until 10 or 11…sometimes 12), watched TV for the majority of the day, napped during the day, and feasted on Christmas candy for hours upon hours.  But now, I am preparing to go back to Butler for Greek Recruitment…so my life is slightly different.  Before I go back I have a rather long list of things I wanted to do that looks a bit like this:

  • Craft Christmas gifts for my friends
  • Bake things that I never got around to before Christmas
  • Fix a few of my favorite clothing items
  • Run errands
  • Visit with friends at home
  • Wash clothes
  • Clean my car

I officially have only a day and a half left until I will leave to go back to school, so it looks like in order for me to get all of this done, my calm, relaxing break is over.  Even though it does feel great to be productive again, I already miss being lazy.  Through being lazy over break, I have discovered new TV shows to watch (Private Chefs of Beverly Hills), and rediscovered some of my old favorites that I’ve been neglecting (The Late Show with David Letterman).

My Mom and I before we went to a showing of the Late Show...

Falling back in love with watching TV is something that I always do over break, but I think that it will be harder than usual to go back to my TV-less life at Butler.  I can watch TV at school, but we don’t have a TV with cable in our room, so it is not nearly as convenient, and I just don’t have time at school.  At least I’ve had at least 2 weeks of pure laziness…and I’m as rested as possible for my return to the But.

Why am I so outrageously lazy???

I have been home and on break now for 5 days, and during those 5 days I have legitimately done nothing.  Well, I take that back.  I went Christmas shopping with my Mom one day, and I went to Indy for a day to help one of my best friends, Liz, with some of her wedding planning.  Other than that, I have visited friends and family, and I have sat on my couch.  Every night I have slept for at least 8 hours (some nights…I slept for 12 hours), and as soon as I woke up, I would move right to my couch where I spent each day vegging out.

I’m serious about this doing nothing thing…except when it comes to watching as many movies and TV shows as possible.  Today alone, I watched 4 movies and caught up on 2 TV shows.  I have also been doing my part as a member of my family to put a serious dent in our stash of Christmas candy from my Mom’s students at school.  You know, I have to help out as much as I can….since I can’t expect my parents to eat all of it by themselves of course.

Because of all of this chilling out and relaxing that I have been doing…I have somewhat lost track of time.  So now, I only have 2 days to do everything before Christmas.  Make gifts, make Christmas cookies, wrap gifts, and wash clothes…so that I have clean things to wear again of course.  Since I’m not very good at this entire being motivated enough to leave the couch thing…I’m just hoping that the fact that Christmas is coming sooner than I expected and I have a ton left to do will make me get up and move.

Our tree…looking pretty bare and presentless.

The most unusual finals week of my college career…

Last week was our finals week at Butler…and it was the easiest finals week that I have ever had.  This is mostly because I only had 3 finals, and they were spread out on different days throughout the week, so I never had a day where I was overloaded.  My schedule looked a little bit like this:

  • Monday – Sales Presentation, then I worked at my internship all day
  • Tuesday – Retailing Final
  • Wednesday – I worked at my internship all day
  • Thursday – Worked again…
  • Friday – Health Care Economics Final

Even though it was kind of nice not having entirely too much to do all week, I actually kind of missed having an awful week where I rarely showered or slept.  I learned that I am much more productive when I have an overloaded schedule…because there is just something about feeling gross and knowing that you absolutely HAVE to study for the next 72 straight hours to make it through the week that strangely motivates me.  This year though, I showered every day, I only pulled one all-nighter, and it was outrageously hard to concentrate and buckle down to study.

In fact, I was so off my finals game that I almost slept through my Health Care Econ final.  I studied until 6 a.m., and the final was at 8 a.m., so I thought that I had just enough time to nap for 30 minutes before I cleaned myself up a bit and studied for one hour before the final.  Instead…I slept for 2 hours, woke up at 8:03, and then ran to my final.  Good thing that I had plenty of time to finish all 8 essay questions during the 2 hour final, and that I was officially finished as soon as it was over.  After last week, I’m actually hoping that all 5 of my classes next semester have finals….is that strange?  That I want to be overwhelmed in my last week of college…ever???

My desk area during finals...there is just something that I love about having stuff EVERYWHERE.

Do professors understand what we do with our days??

Sometimes…when we get overwhelmed with school…we have to cut back on other things in order to get everything done.  This could mean not going to a meeting or class…but most of the time…it means that we stop showering.  I know, it’s gross…but it’s how we get by.  A few weeks ago, one of my roommates was having a really busy week, and she didn’t shower….or really change her clothes for a few days.  We all understand, because we’ve been there too…but one of her professors was legitimately concerned about her well-being…since she looked like she hadn’t showered or changed clothes for a few days.

Sometimes hiding under a blanket is almost as helpful as just not showering....

This situation raises the question: Do professors understand what we do with our days??  Do they understand how much work goes into each of the projects they assign, and that other professors are assigning projects at the same time as well??  Well, just as a friendly reminder to all, here is a breakdown of what a normal day looks like in my life (this is a Tuesday schedule):

  • 6:30 a.m. – Get up and get ready for work
  • 8:00 a.m. – Arrive at work
  • 12:00 p.m. – Drive back to school quickly…
  • 12:30 p.m. – Grab a quick lunch, before I walk to class…
  • 1:00 p.m. – Class
  • 2:30 p.m. – Drive back to work
  • 6:00 p.m. – Leave work and drive back to school
  • 6:30 p.m. – Grab a quick dinner…
  • 7:00 p.m. – Meeting time (usually BUSF)
  • 8:00 p.m. – Check my email, send out a ton of emails
  • 9:00 p.m. – Meeting time (usually AKPsi)
  • 10:00 p.m. – Go back to my room and put on sweats, start figuring out what I need to study…and start that.
  • 12:00 a.m. – Keep working…
  • 3:00 a.m. – Maybe….time to go to sleep.

Keep in mind…this isn’t a schedule for test weeks, or weeks when we have papers due, etc.  This is a normal day in a normal week.  Yeah….college sounds great…doesn’t it???  Don’t get me wrong, I do love college…..but I guess the moral of the blog is….don’t judge us when we don’t shower…because sometimes that extra 15 minutes of sleep is totally worth it.

Trying something new for Thanksgiving Break…

I’m currently on Thanksgiving Break, and for the first time ever I am not following my usual break routine.  This includes the following things…in this order:

  1. Drive home
  2. Eat some great food
  3. Sleep
  4. Lay on the couch
  5. Watch every one of my TV shows on Hulu
  6. Sleep
  7. Watch every movie that is decent on TV
  8. Go out to dinner with my parents
  9. Hang out with my friends
  10. Sleep
  11. Wash clothes

This time around…instead of recuperating from school with this routine…I flew to New Mexico.  My sister, Natalie, and brother-in-law, John, moved here after they got married in July, so John’s brother and I flew out to spend Thanksgiving with them.  We’ve been having a great time seeing their new home and exploring a new part of the country…but I’m not going to lie…I miss being lazy.  I always use breaks to be as lazy as humanly possible and to watch move television than anyone in their right mind should.  But, I keep reminding myself that I didn’t fly halfway across the country to sleep and sit inside…so I need to make the most of my time here.  I’ll be posting more about all of our adventures, including hiking up a mountain and making our first Thanksgiving dinner on our own (help us, please!).  So check back soon for updates!

My Own Butler Crib: Part II

So yesterday I showed you all around the living side of my room…and today you get to see my sleeper, bathroom, and my closet.

First up, the sleeper.  This is one of the most amazing aspects of living in my sorority house, because in our room, when someone wants to go nap, sleep, or study, they can go into the sleeper side and close themselves off from the rest of the world.  In the sleeper we each have a bed (yes, I am 22 years old and I still sleep in a bunk bed) and a dresser, and it is also the holding space for most of our junk.  Another beautiful thing is that since we really only sleep in there, we usually don’t mind if it is messy…because the lights are off in it about 75% of the time.  So please excuse the clothes on the floor, and the unmade beds.  We rarely make our beds because #1 – making a bed on the top bunk is next to impossible, and #2 – they’re in the sleeper, so we only see them when we are sleeping.

The sleeper….

Next is our bathroom…one of the other best parts about living in this part of my house.  We have double sinks, and tons of counter and cabinet space, which is perfect for girls…obviously.

The bathroom…

On the other side of the bathroom we have the other bathroom necessities…a shower/tub and a toilet.  Nuff said.

The other side of the bathroom…

And now, my favorite/least favorite part of the room…my closet.  I don’t like it because it is entirely too small…but I love it because it has all of my clothes in it.  It is jam packed from the rack to the shelf above the rack to the area below where my clothes are hanging, so I guess you can never say that I don’t know how to utilize space well…

My life…my closet.

And that, in a nutshell, is my room.  I have 3 amazing roommates, Lauren, Katie (Carl), and Brooke, who have made this year entirely too much fun.  Even though our room isn’t always clean (or ever), we still love hanging out with each other and making our room obviously the coolest at Alpha Phi.

Everybody loves Fall Break…

Breaks from school are always great….but the ones that come at a point in the semester when you really have no homework at all to do are always the best.  That’s how my Fall Break was this year, a fabulous 3 days of chilling out on my couch, while still being somewhat productive…in regards to nothing school related…at all.

Since I am interning currently at Slingshot SEO, I stayed on campus for an extra day to get another day of work in.  It was kind of nice to slowly ease into break by finishing classes one day and then just working the next day, instead of rushing home and crashing right away like I usually do.  Instead, I postponed the crash for a day, by driving home after work on Thursday.  This was really nice, because I packed up my things leisurely, I had already recovered from all of my tests that week, and I just chilled out as I drove all the way home.

I love the drive home...

Once I got home….I saw my dogs, as usual…and then I did not leave my couch from about 9 p.m. Thursday night until around 4 p.m. the next day.  So my first goal for break, resting, was officially a success.

Love my puppies...so much.

The rest of my break consisted of going out to eat with my parents (we only cooked one meal for the family the entire weekend), shopping with my mom, and doing a bit of crafting to get my creative fix for the weekend.  I took a little bit of homework home to do, but I somehow succeeded at never opening a book or even thinking of school for 2 whole days (I did some homework on Sunday), which was an absolutely beautiful thing.

The top 5 reasons I love breaks…

I love coming home… a lot.  This year, I haven’t been able to come home nearly as much as I would like, so this is only my second time home (the first was Labor Day weekend, and now it is Fall Break).  But every time I come home, I do the same things, and the routine comforts me in a way.  The routine changes slightly, depending on the time of the year and what I need to do, but these 5 things are the constants for every visit of mine.

  1. The food. Eating at home is basically the best of both worlds, home cooking and going out to eat.  There are several places that we always MUST visit, like Bobe’s Pizza, our favorite Amish restaurant, the BBQ place in town, or Sweet Stuff Cafe, so basically I could eat out for every meal, and be perfectly content.  But, since my dad is a farmer, and we always have a pretty impressive stash of beef, I love having a good steak dinner or my dad’s famous Sunday lunch complete with pot roast and homemade mashed potatoes.
  2. The drive. If you have never driven to southern Indiana, you should.  Basically, as soon as you get south of Indianapolis, the landscape turns into beautiful rolling hills with tons of trees…which makes for an absolutely perfect drive on a fall day.  My drive home yesterday would have only been better if I could control the weather since driving on a sunny day is so much more pleasant than driving in constant rain for 2.5 hours.
  3. My couch. Last night I sat down on my couch around 9:30 p.m., and did not leave it until 4:00 p.m. today.  Of course I left to eat and to grab a few other things, but other than that….my couch and I have been the best of friends.  It is the perfect place to sleep, watch TV, or write blogs, so really, what else do I need on Fall Break??  If only my parents wouldn’t mind if I took this couch with me wherever I go… then I would basically be set for life.
  4. Seeing my dogs. I have two dogs, Sophie and Stella, who I do not see nearly enough.  Stella is a spunky (spunky is an understatement) lab mix, and Sophie is a calm and poised Great Pyrenees.  I love them both…especially when they greet me as soon as I pull in the driveway.  Unfortunately, Stella’s outrageousness makes playing with them for any length of time completely exhausting… and then I feel bad for Sophie because Stella is a complete attention hog.
  5. Doing my laundry. The one thing that I like the least about college is doing laundry, or paying to do my own laundry.  So I usually bring it home with me….which makes for entirely too much work on the weekend…but at least I don’t have use all of my quarters to pay for it.

I miss my bed … already.

Today marks the end of my third week of class….and I almost pulled my first all-nighter last night.  Usually, I only have to pull all-nighters when I have been really slacker-ish or when I have been doing some serious procrastination, but this time around I can say that I have not been procrastinating…at all.  To get my stuff done, I have to be doing things…all the time.  Here is a quick overview of my schedule each week…

  • Monday – Work, Class, Class, Tutor, homework
  • Tuesday – Work, Class, Work, Meetings
  • Wednesday – Work, Class, Class, Tutor, homework
  • Thursday – Work, Class, Work, Meetings
  • Friday – Sleep, Meetings, Catch up on life.

Basically, I feel slightly overwhelmed.  I’m gone from 7:30 a.m. each morning until at least 7:00 p.m., or sometimes as late as 10:00 p.m.  And the worst part is…so far I haven’t had much homework.  It has only been keeping up with my reading and small things rather than doing big projects, papers, or even worse – studying for a test.  So I’m not quite sure just yet how I’m going to handle this whole situation….you know…actually having things to do for class.

Usually, when I have lots to do…I skip sleeping…or I just sleep whenever I can…wherever I can.  That usually means that I don’t sleep in my bed, just because it is too darn comfortable.  When I am exhausted, my bed turns into this place where nothing can wake me up, including my phone and sometimes my roommates…which is obviously a problem.  To avoid this completely, I just sleep in other places, like on random couches in my house, the floor, or my futon.  It tends to work rather well for me, even though it makes me miss my bed an awful lot.  All this talking about my bed makes me want to go to sleep right now….or maybe it’s because I only slept for three hours last night.  I guess it will always be a mystery.

Oh how I love my bed…and sleeping.

Update:  I’m so tired, I fell asleep while posting this blog.  True story.

It’s The Final Countdown….

This is my senior year….and this is my final introduction post on my Butler blog.  (This is my 4th year as a blogger….and yes, I am getting nostalgic….about a blog post.)  Just in case you haven’t read my blog much, or even if you have, this will hopefully give you an idea of what kind of things I will be writing about this year…so get excited!

I'm obviously rather excited for the year...

This year I am a senior Marketing major, which means that I am finally taking classes that I love (after three years of Finance, Accounting, and other things that aren’t so fun), and I also have a Communication Studies minor, which means that I give lots of presentations.  I really enjoy both of these areas, because the faculty in both departments are just amazing (as most Butler professors are), and they give me a chance to try completely different things, like taking classes that combine the study of leadership with developing presentation skills, and classes all about retailing or sales.  As a business major, I will complete two internships before I graduate, one of which I completed this summer with Vera Bradley, and another that I am doing now, with Slingshot SEO.  I am so glad that I have both taken care and planned now, because the last thing that I want is to have to be searching for a post-grad job and an internship at the same time….it’s hard enough just finding one!

I am definitely what you would classify as an over committed student, because I love being involved…a little too much.  I’m in a sorority, Alpha Phi, where I’m one of the New Member Educators (so I am helping our new members with their transition to sorority life), which means that I’m also living in the house with 75 other girls (so I don’t have to cook for myself…always a plus…I’m all for prolonging the inevitable).  I’m also in Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), BAMA (Butler American Marketing Association), and BUSF (Butler University Student Foundation), among other things.  Those are my main clubs for my senior year – and I am so excited to somewhat narrow down a list of about 12, to 4.

When I’m not working, in meetings, or in class, I love hanging out at Starbucks, crafting, watching TV, finding good sweet tea in Indianapolis, and sleeping.  Since I really don’t have much free time to spend doing these things….I don’t do them all a lot….including sleeping.  Nonetheless, I do what I can…and I love it.

Don't worry...I do sleep...sometimes.

This year is going to be a great one….even though it will be outrageously busy.  Even though I might have a breakdown or two…I know that I am just going to make the most of my time here at Butler….and blog about every moment!  :)
