About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

A Glimpse of Room 11…

Every semester, all of the girls that live in our house (I’m an Alpha Phi) have the chance to move rooms and live with different people.  My sophomore year I moved rooms, and even though it was nice to have a change of scenery…it was a pretty big hassle.  So last year and this year…I never moved.  At semester we were starting to get tired of our room set up though, so we decided to go ahead and try to change up the room a bit, and get creative.  It took a few days to get everything moved to the place where we wanted it, but in the end, it was a great change for all of us.  You can check out what it used to look like if you’re interested….but here is what we came up with!

We wanted to have an entire area devoted to just hanging out – so we moved our futon into the corner, made a little window seat with our cubes, and got rid of the coffee table.

My absolute favorite parts of the room are the little clusters of decorating that we have.  Since we all have such different style, it was hard to make the room look unified and still reflect us…but I think we found the absolute perfect balance.  Here we have some of my crafts, paired with my roommate Katie’s painting of Prince…which is absolutely amazing.  I also love that Prince watches over our futon day after day….

I also made some yarn wrapped letters for each of us (one for the first letter of each of our names)…and found this idea for displaying them on Pinterest.  I am so happy with how it turned out!

We had another little area that needed some sprucing up…so we pulled together some crafts I made, a cute lamp of Katie’s, and some of Brooke and Lauren’s Alpha Phi frames.  Even though I’m not the biggest fan of pink…I still love this corner.

The hardest part for us while moving around our room was finding a good place for our desks.  We ended up with two beside each other (Lauren and I), Brooke on the other side of the room, and Katie in the corner by Brooke.  Here is the area around Lauren and my desks…it gets kind of busy sometimes – but we still love it!

And here is the view of the side of our room with the futon, our desks, and everything.  All this talking about decorating just makes me want to decorate it all over again….or maybe I’ll wait until I get my own house.

Oh, how time flies…

I’ve been MIA from blogging for a little while…mostly because I completely lost track of time.  Almost two weeks ago I came back to Butler for Recruitment, and ever since then I have been running around like a crazy person.  I moved back into Alpha Phi, we rearranged our room and got settled, then we decided to rearrange our room…again.  At one point during all of this chaos….our sleeper side looked a little bit like this…

Before we knew it, it was time for Formal Recruitment…which meant that our room had to look like people could actually enter it without injuring themselves or getting lost.  Luckily, we found our floor, desks, and dressers, and actually made the room look cute.  Even though Recruitment week seems like a time when you might have free time since we aren’t in school, this year it was exactly the opposite for me.  Somehow, I never got to enjoy that free time though…because I was always busy either cleaning our room (for some reason it kept getting dirty), helping set up for the next day, or I was too exhausted to function.

Fortunately, now that Recruitment is complete and school has started…things are starting to calm down.  I officially have time to just sit and play on my computer, and more importantly…I have a place to sit in my room while I do it.  Check back soon for more about Recruitment 2K12, and for a photo tour of our new and improved room!

My Own Butler Crib: Part II

So yesterday I showed you all around the living side of my room…and today you get to see my sleeper, bathroom, and my closet.

First up, the sleeper.  This is one of the most amazing aspects of living in my sorority house, because in our room, when someone wants to go nap, sleep, or study, they can go into the sleeper side and close themselves off from the rest of the world.  In the sleeper we each have a bed (yes, I am 22 years old and I still sleep in a bunk bed) and a dresser, and it is also the holding space for most of our junk.  Another beautiful thing is that since we really only sleep in there, we usually don’t mind if it is messy…because the lights are off in it about 75% of the time.  So please excuse the clothes on the floor, and the unmade beds.  We rarely make our beds because #1 – making a bed on the top bunk is next to impossible, and #2 – they’re in the sleeper, so we only see them when we are sleeping.

The sleeper….

Next is our bathroom…one of the other best parts about living in this part of my house.  We have double sinks, and tons of counter and cabinet space, which is perfect for girls…obviously.

The bathroom…

On the other side of the bathroom we have the other bathroom necessities…a shower/tub and a toilet.  Nuff said.

The other side of the bathroom…

And now, my favorite/least favorite part of the room…my closet.  I don’t like it because it is entirely too small…but I love it because it has all of my clothes in it.  It is jam packed from the rack to the shelf above the rack to the area below where my clothes are hanging, so I guess you can never say that I don’t know how to utilize space well…

My life…my closet.

And that, in a nutshell, is my room.  I have 3 amazing roommates, Lauren, Katie (Carl), and Brooke, who have made this year entirely too much fun.  Even though our room isn’t always clean (or ever), we still love hanging out with each other and making our room obviously the coolest at Alpha Phi.

My roommates and I at formal – Brooke, me, Lauren, and Katie (Carl)

Wedding Fever…..

As if the occupants of Alpha Phi’s Room 13 were not distracted easily enough….we now officially have wedding fever.

First, Lauren’s sister, Megan, got engaged, and Lauren is her Maid-of-Honor.

They look so much alike...its adorable!

Second, Meghan got engaged…

This was at Meghan's candlelight to announce her engagement to our house...I think it is adorable how happy she is!

And third, my sister got engaged….last Wednesday…and I am her Maid-of-Honor.  :)   Congrats to her and my future brother-in-law, John….so excited for you both!  (Especially John….I mean…who wouldn’t want to be in our family?)

Side Note: Natalie...this is the last photo we had together...and it was taken a year and a half ago. Fail.

So….basically all we do is talk about weddings.  We look at wedding blogs, at engagement photos, at wedding dresses, at bridesmaid dresses, at venues, and everything else wedding related.  And of course….the last person to get engaged…my dear sister, Natalie, has set the closest date, July 23.  Yeah…..I know.  There is a lot to do.

The best part about hearing about/being involved with all of these weddings though, at least for me, is talking about the decorations.  If you haven’t seen my blogs about crafting and decorating…..basically, I love to craft and decorate.  And I love that each bride-to-be’s style is going to come out beautifully through the decorations at the wedding.  Lauren’s sister, Megan, is going to have an earthy, rustic feel (think mason jars, hydrangeas, wooden crates, and burlap).  Meghan’s is going to be “vintage, hipster, green chic” (think recycled materials, antiques, and anything eco-friendly).  My sister’s theme is still forming, but it will be very classic and minimal, with navy as her main color, and a bright green as the accent.

So that is where we are at with all of our wedding planning here in Room 13…I think that by the time Liz, Lauren, and I get married…we will be old pros at all of this.  At least I can hope so!

Snowpocalypse 2011…Day #2

Today is Snow Day #2 of Snowpocalypse 2011…and even though I have spent every moment of the past 48 hours with the same 3 people…we are somehow surviving.  This time of togetherness is great and I do love it….but with it….comes cat fights.  I know this because this is what happens when my sister, mom, and I are all stuck inside for a prolonged period of time….and it is what happened about an hour ago.

Meghan:  What are you doing on your computer over there?

Lauren:  What are you doing to be productive??

Meghan:  Did someone just give me a ‘tude?

Yes….Meghan really asked if someone gave her a “tude”.  Shortly after this exchange….Lauren and I began to make fun of Liz, since she is the only one in our room that wasn’t wearing a Snuggie.  So she started to show us everything that her blanket can do…even though it doesn’t have sleeves…and so began “Blanket Wars”.

The different ways Liz can wear her blanket....

The ways we can wear our Snuggies....

Blanket Wars got pretty heated......obviously

Other than the little cat fights and Blanket Wars….not much has been going on here in Room 13.  We cleaned our bathroom and room last night, and worked out yesterday afternoon…which is basically the extent of our productivity.  We didn’t even venture out to play with the ice/snow…although we watched one of the girls in our house, Amanda, go ice skating on our front lawn last night.  But now the snow plows are out, and it isn’t snowing/icing much anymore….so it looks like we will have class tomorrow.  Ugh.  Back to productivity and real life….unless the weather wants to get crazy again…which I am completely fine with.  But until then, I think I am going to open a book for the first time since Monday morning…..wish me luck.

Snowpocalypse 2011…Day #1

Today is a snow day here at Butler University.  For those of you who are in high school, let me explain why this is so exciting….

  • We don’t get snow days in college.
  • This is only the second time that Butler has canceled classes in like the last 20 years or something outrageous like that.
  • Imagine a day where you are snowed/iced in to the place where you live…which is with 75 of your closest friends….Yeah….it is awesome.

The only sad part about it is that we haven’t been very productive…unless you count watching 3 movies in the last 12 hours being productive….which I definitely do.  Here is a rundown of our snow day thus far….

  • We started our movie marathon last night around 11:00 p.m. with The Wedding Date, after which we were so infatuated with Dermot Mulroney that we decided to watch My Best Friend’s Wedding too.
  • This morning we rose with the sun around 11:00 a.m…
  • We sat around until noon when we went downstairs to the kitchen to get lunch….
  • Now we are watching 50 First Dates.
  • I have been creeping on blogs for most of the day…mostly The Pioneer Woman’s….and I am getting ready to order her book that goes on sale…TODAY!
  • A little while ago, Meghan (one of my roommates), did one math problem, got it wrong, and then gave up.  But, don’t worry, she did knit 5 rows last night.  (And yes, her homework for one of her classes is knitting.  It blows my mind as well.)
  • Lauren (one of my roommates) has been on Facebook all day.  But I did see her open one of her books earlier….it didn’t last long….but it did happen.
  • And the Productivity Award of Day #1 of Snowpocalypse 2011 goes to…Liz (one of my roommates) who got real crazy a little while ago…and bought a plane ticket.

Yeah…I know that you are all jealous of what we have done today.  And since we just saw that Butler will once again be closed TOMORROW….we decided that our activity for tonight will be taking photos of ourselves on Photo Booth.  The last time that the four of us all lived together, Meghan, Lauren, and I had a Photo Booth session late one night….so we are going to make that happen again.  Be sure to check back tomorrow to see the results of this awesomeness….and I will leave you now with a few of our gems from last year…

Preparing for the arrival of….Snowpocalypse 2011.

Yes.  Snowpocalypse 2011.  This is what we are all calling the blizzard/ice storm hitting Indianapolis tonight/tomorrow.  It is going to be intense….at least I think so.  Here is what we know about Snowpocalypse so far…

  1. It is predicted to bring 10-12 inches of snow and 1-2 inches of ice to Indianapolis.
  2. Butler’s administration believes the weather stations….and we DON’T HAVE CLASS TOMORROW!
  3. The outlook for Indianapolis’ weather in the next 12-24 hours looks so bleak/scary that the national news is talking about us.
  4. It was supposed to start at 7 p.m., and by 6 p.m. the freezing rain had already started coming down.  When we left Wal-Mart at 7:15 p.m., the roads were covered with a slick slush, the freezing rain was coming down significantly harder….and there was a sheet of ice already formed on my car.

So tonight, my roommates Meghan, Lauren and I went to Wal-Mart because like every other person in Indianapolis, we wanted to be prepared for the storm….you know…just in case.  The only way that I can describe the craziness of Wal-Mart is by saying that it was like Black Friday….only without good deals and Christmas.  Instead of hunting for TVs and toys, people were clearing out all the bottled water, the bread, and the flashlights.  Yeah….not that exciting….but I loved it.  I love Black Friday….and I loved the beginning of Snowpocalypse 2011.  We went into Wal-Mart, got our necessities, and then got in line.  The waiting lasted about 40-45 minutes….during which I ran around the store to find things like water, flashlights, and craisins.  We had to do this…because Wal-Mart was out of carts…and none of us had enough hands/room in our arms to get stuff like cases of water, but there is always plenty of time to get that stuff while someone is your placeholder in line!  I was enjoying the intensity of the lines at Wal-Mart so much that I even took some photos….

The line behind us....

Other carts.....

More lines....

As Snowpocalypse 2011 continues to evolve and wreak havoc on the Indianapolis area, check back to my blog for updates.  Unless of course, the ice decides to hate on all of our power lines and then we end up without power.  Keep your fingers crossed that this doesn’t happen….because I don’t think I will be able to make it.  But, I do have my Laughing Cow cheese and craisins and my flashlight thanks to that trip to Wal-Mart….so maybe I will make it.

Finals: The Aftermath

I have officially been done with finals for five days now.  The good part is that I am a real person again…but last Tuesday-Thursday…my room looked like some random college student hadn’t done anything besides study for the past week….because that is what had happened.  Except, imagine that times four…because that is how many of us lived in my room.  Basically, it was horrible.  Check this out.

All of my cups from the week of finals. Apparently I forgot how to throw things away...and I put them all on the bookshelf so they didn't clutter my workspace.

My area of the room....looking as cluttered as ever...

And unfortunately, finals did not only wreak havoc on my room….but it also took a pretty serious toll on my roommate, Meghan.

She was writing her final paper of the semester....it had been a rough couple of days.

But luckily, we all survived, and our room somehow got back to a normal state after it was all over.  It did take a rather long time to get back to this though, because of course I made plans right after finals that didn’t allow me to clean stuff right away…or even the next day.  See, usually I am ready to head out as soon as I am done with finals…but this year I decided to stay in town for an extra day.  My plan was to go out to lunch after my last final, then to babysit, finish Christmas shopping, and then leisurely get packed.  But of course, ten thousand other things came up, and then a massive ice storm hit southern Indiana (where I’m from), so I couldn’t exactly go home the next day.  Then as I started to try to clean up….and it ended up taking me about 4x as long as I originally planned.  So instead of making it home by 2 p.m. on Thursday (my original plan)….I made it home at 8 p.m. on Friday.  Apparently the combination of finals and my life made my room much harder to clean and pack up (we have to pack up basically everything in our rooms for break so we can move rooms when we get back), which is why it took an entire day longer than I had originally planned.  But…I made it through finals…and I made it home….and best of all…I am a real person again.  Sort of.  Now watching TV and relaxing on my couch have taken over my life…and I will just let this happen for the next 3 weeks….I love the life of a college student!
