About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

An Outrageously Busy/Wonderful Weekend

A lot of my weekends are filled to the brim with different activities…but last weekend was basically the perfect weekend in terms of always having something to do.  Each event was spaced out so I could do everything that I wanted, which I really appreciated.  It was also pretty much filled with Butler-ness…which is always exciting.  So here is a quick rundown of everything that I did throughout my weekend:

Blue II’s Birthday

Each year, BUSF has a birthday party for Blue II, which is probably my favorite BUSF event of the year.  We give away free cupcakes in Starbucks, people get photos with the birthday boy himself, and we have contests and giveaways for everyone that comes.  It is basically a great time for everyone, students, faculty & staff, community members, and of course, Blue!  Even though it rained during the event this year, it was still a ton of fun and a good time was had by all.

Alpha Phi Formal

I normally love any occasion to dress up and dance the night away…and this formal wasn’t any different….except that I didn’t dress up!  Our seniors have a tradition to wear tshirts to their last formal, so instead of wearing a dress, I got to wear a tshirt and jeans.  It made for a great night, even though I wish that it wasn’t my last formal.  Oh, the life of a senior.

A bunch of Alpha Phis hanging out before formal...

Bulldog Jog

This is another event that is usually put on by BUSF, but this year we passed the event on to the HRC.  Since we have always been so involved, we still all volunteered…and I had the chance to help out with the dog walk…which was basically an awesome way to spend my morning.  I love dogs, and thinking about what kinds of dogs I want throughout my life…so it was perfect.  There were tons of dogs there that I loved, but my absolute favorites were these gorgeous/huge Huskies.  I need them.

Someday...I will have dogs like this.

Meghan’s Bridal Shower

Two of my friends are getting married in the next few months, and on Saturday afternoon we had one of their bridal showers.  I think we were all nervous for how it would all come together, but it was a great day with her friends and family, and it made me even more excited for her wedding!  Some of us crafted our gifts for her, which of course was right up my alley…especially since I haven’t been getting my crafting fix lately.  Thanks, Pinterest!

A Glimpse of Room 11…

Every semester, all of the girls that live in our house (I’m an Alpha Phi) have the chance to move rooms and live with different people.  My sophomore year I moved rooms, and even though it was nice to have a change of scenery…it was a pretty big hassle.  So last year and this year…I never moved.  At semester we were starting to get tired of our room set up though, so we decided to go ahead and try to change up the room a bit, and get creative.  It took a few days to get everything moved to the place where we wanted it, but in the end, it was a great change for all of us.  You can check out what it used to look like if you’re interested….but here is what we came up with!

We wanted to have an entire area devoted to just hanging out – so we moved our futon into the corner, made a little window seat with our cubes, and got rid of the coffee table.

My absolute favorite parts of the room are the little clusters of decorating that we have.  Since we all have such different style, it was hard to make the room look unified and still reflect us…but I think we found the absolute perfect balance.  Here we have some of my crafts, paired with my roommate Katie’s painting of Prince…which is absolutely amazing.  I also love that Prince watches over our futon day after day….

I also made some yarn wrapped letters for each of us (one for the first letter of each of our names)…and found this idea for displaying them on Pinterest.  I am so happy with how it turned out!

We had another little area that needed some sprucing up…so we pulled together some crafts I made, a cute lamp of Katie’s, and some of Brooke and Lauren’s Alpha Phi frames.  Even though I’m not the biggest fan of pink…I still love this corner.

The hardest part for us while moving around our room was finding a good place for our desks.  We ended up with two beside each other (Lauren and I), Brooke on the other side of the room, and Katie in the corner by Brooke.  Here is the area around Lauren and my desks…it gets kind of busy sometimes – but we still love it!

And here is the view of the side of our room with the futon, our desks, and everything.  All this talking about decorating just makes me want to decorate it all over again….or maybe I’ll wait until I get my own house.

Sewing: My favorite and least favorite of all crafts.

There are several times this semester when I have truly wanted to just put everything on hold, take an evening to myself, and craft.  But, I somehow have stayed dedicated to all of my homework and tasks for my activities on campus, and I saved all my crafting for Fall Break.  As usual, I ran out of time to actually finish everything during break….so I just put the finishing touches on one of my things over the weekend.  Here are the things I made….

The newest addition to my Alpha Phi wardrobe....

I just love pillows...

I made the shirt out of a t-shirt that I bought from Target ($10), a Vera Bradley cloth napkin (around $4), and an old white t-shirt to outline the Alpha Phi letters.  Cutting out the letters wasn’t too hard, I just used a sweatshirt I already had to trace the shapes that I wanted, then used those as stencils.  I ran out of time after that step, so I came back to school with cloth letters and a shirt, but no shirt with letters.  Then this weekend I decided to just tackle the entire project….which made me truly hate sewing.  I attached the letters to the shirt with Heat ‘n Bond hem, then sewed around them with my sewing machine to give them the look I wanted, and to make sure that they didn’t start to fall off…ever.  This was a struggle…to say the least.  It took entirely too long (around 4 hours), so I don’t think I will be making another shirt like that anytime in the near future….and I will most definitely cherish that shirt.

The pillow, on the other hand, was extremely simple.  I took a plain pillow I already had and stitched on felt “petals” in the shape of a flower.  It was so easy, and just look at how cute it is!

Even though sewing can be outrageously difficult (especially when you have a VERY cheap sewing machine), I truly love being able to look at something on Pinterest or on another crafting site and to know that I can make it.  I might say some choice words to my sewing machine and debate throwing it out the window when it doesn’t do what I want it to, but in the end…I usually have some pretty cute stuff.  Which is always totally worth it…obviously.

Turn that frown upside down….

This week has definitely been a difficult week for everyone…including people at Butler and people not at Butler.  It was intense here because the semester is really starting to pick up right now…so tests, papers, and projects are all in full swing…cue breakdown mode.  For everyone else….I guess it was just stressful…for various reasons.  But because it has been so intense, this blog is going to be dedicated to simply providing ways for people to chill out, relax, smile, and have some fun.

  1. Watch Jessica’s Daily Affirmation.  It always does the trick for me.
  2. Watch Kittens Inspired by Kittens.  Ditto.
  3. Start using Pinterest.  It will bring beautiful things into your life…no matter what.
  4. Watch Modern Family. There are currently 3 episodes on Hulu….and all 3 are epic.
  5. Go to Starbucks…and get a fall drink.  Today my plan is to go and chill out at Starbucks with a Pumpkin Spice Latte….or a Chai Tea Latte.
  6. Just sit…trust me…it’s great.
  7. Walk around one of your favorite places…for me…that’s Butler.  It’s just to beautiful to not love it.

I love my school....

Isn't it beautiful???

So…if this has been a tough week for you…do yourself a favor…and take a break.  It’s Friday….you should enjoy yourself!

Crafting: Gifts Edition

This month, or rather, last week, three of my favorite people had birthdays.  Since I love to craft so much, I decided to make them gifts instead of buying them things.  So, I went out to my favorite crafting blogs and sites, like Pinterest, Ucreate crafts, and Dollar Store Crafts, and took all kinds of ideas to create their gifts.  I love doing this because it ends up meaning so much more, and it gives you the chance to really personalize things.  Here is what I came up with…

Since my sister just got married, I wanted to do something special wedding related for her.  So, I took her “symbol” from the invitations, sketched it onto a canvas, went over that with hot glue, and painted it.  Here are the different stages….in photos:

Just the hot glue and the canvas…
After a few coats of spray paint…
The finished product…

It ended up looking really great, but more hot glue-ish than I wanted…so I added in a little bit of taupe paint to jazz it up a bit, and to draw attention away from the hot glue.

I also wanted to make some fun little bracelets from fabric scraps…so here is what I came up with.

Just the fabric…

I found a tutorial to make bracelets out of rosettes, but I liked the idea of using “yo-yo’s“, so that is what I made….

The yo-yos….

Then I hot glued the yo-yo’s to some felt, and stitched on a little chain and lobster clasp to attach them together.  In the end…this is what I had (in 3 different colors, for me, my sister, and my roommate):

The finished bracelet…

I liked the yo-yo’s so much that I also hot glued them onto some bobby pins, to make fun little hair things.  I thought they ended up rather cute…

And attached to bobby pins…

I also made another gift for someone (my best friend from home, Alison), but that craft has been featured on my blog before, and I won’t be able to give it to her for a few weeks.  So, I’m saving it, just in case she reads this blog.

Back to School Crafting

Every time I move to a new place, or just a new room (which happens about 3 times a year…at least) I feel the need to craft.  I love making new things, and making sure that everything around me coordinates.  So….here is Round 1 of the things that I have crafted lately (and check back soon to see how everything fits together in my room!):

First off … the focal point of our room.  My roommate Brooke made these awesome crayon canvas things over the summer…so to make them stand out in our room, we mounted them on an old painting that I got at a yard sale for $1 over the summer.  I also spray painted the painting and frame, to make it actually match (and to cover up the awful picture underneath).

Our room’s focal point

To see how to make the crayon things….check out this tutorial. I even made my own last weekend!

Midway through the melting of the crayons…

To make our room feel more like home, we have a coffee table, and to make it more decorative, we have a bowl with decorative balls in it.  But since they are expensive, and I love recycling, I made some with the pages from my old Vera Bradley Blue Rhapsody planner.  More unique, and so much cheaper!

Our coffee table centerpiece…

For our other wall, I just recreated some things that I had already.  So I repainted an “A Phi” sign, replaced the fabric inside a frame to match, and hung something I made this summer as well.  I still want to make the white ball fit in better by making a new one or painting it, so we will see when that happens!

A little cluster of things…

For the first week, our side table was empty, so I slowly found things to decorate it with.  I fixed up an old bookend I found at a second hand store this summer, and I created some paint chip art in a frame I got at a yard sale (and I spray painted – to update it a bit).

Check out our fancy bookend….

To see more about how to make paint chip art, check out this tutorial.  I used two different colors (thank you, Wal-Mart), and just mixed them up a bit.  It was such an easy, but cool project!

The paint chips I used….

I also made some fun gifts this past week for my sister and my roommate, Lauren, (they both had birthdays this week) so I’ll be blogging about those as well – after my sister gets the package I sent her with her gifts in it.  I can’t let the cat out of the bag about what I made her before she gets it, right??  :)  (By the way, Happy 26th Birthday, Natalie!)
