About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

My Post-Test Routine

Before each test or paper, I basically become a studying zombie.  I don’t know what is happening around me, I stop showering, and the floor around my desk and my closet disappear.  So, as soon as the test is over…all I want to do is get my life back together.  Here is my usual routine:

  • Put away my books, notes, and binders.  I also try to organize things a little bit…so that it will be easier to find everything when it comes time for finals.
  • Put my clothes away.  When I’m studying….I don’t have time to fold or hang up a single item of clothing…so there are piles of clothes, shoes, and jewelry all over the room.
  • Clean off my desk.  Usually my desk becomes a stack of papers, plates, cups, and trash…. again…because I don’t have time to be a real person and put them away when I am in studying mode.
  • Shower.  I can go for days without showering…even though you really don’t want me to.  Unfortunately, I have become a pro at not showering…which my roommates and I call being a “creature”.  I haven’t felt like a creature this year yet, because I am always working on the days of tests, and they might ask me to stop coming in to work if I let myself go to work in my creature state.

This isn't me...but it is the perfect example of what a "creature" looks like.

  • Creep facebook and twitter.  I also stop creeping as much as is necessary to truly know what is going on around campus or at home…. so I have to catch up at some point.
  • Work out.  Usually this happens before the shower…but after, I just feel even better about myself than I already did.  It’s like I’m a walking advertisement for productivity.
  • Eat anything and everything I want.  I figure that after studying so hard for so long, and then working out on top of that…I deserve a treat.  So I give myself one…or two…or three.  Sometimes, I even make a run to Flying Cupcake (a cupcake shop near Butler).

Once I have done all of these things…I am usually good to go, and I feel like a real person again.  Of course, sometimes I will have one test after another (like this week) so this entire process took me about a day to complete.  (Most of my time this week was spent cleaning…not going to lie).

Turn that frown upside down….

This week has definitely been a difficult week for everyone…including people at Butler and people not at Butler.  It was intense here because the semester is really starting to pick up right now…so tests, papers, and projects are all in full swing…cue breakdown mode.  For everyone else….I guess it was just stressful…for various reasons.  But because it has been so intense, this blog is going to be dedicated to simply providing ways for people to chill out, relax, smile, and have some fun.

  1. Watch Jessica’s Daily Affirmation.  It always does the trick for me.
  2. Watch Kittens Inspired by Kittens.  Ditto.
  3. Start using Pinterest.  It will bring beautiful things into your life…no matter what.
  4. Watch Modern Family. There are currently 3 episodes on Hulu….and all 3 are epic.
  5. Go to Starbucks…and get a fall drink.  Today my plan is to go and chill out at Starbucks with a Pumpkin Spice Latte….or a Chai Tea Latte.
  6. Just sit…trust me…it’s great.
  7. Walk around one of your favorite places…for me…that’s Butler.  It’s just to beautiful to not love it.

I love my school....

Isn't it beautiful???

So…if this has been a tough week for you…do yourself a favor…and take a break.  It’s Friday….you should enjoy yourself!

Sleep = Completely Unnecessary

Two weeks ago….I had a first.  I pulled my very first all-nighter.  And on Monday night…I had my second.  Never before did I truly understand how intense an all-nighter is….and now I am slightly afraid that they will become more frequent, since I have had two in the past two weeks, and up until this point in my college career I hadn’t had any.

One great thing about my first all-nighter is that even though I thought that it would be an absolute and complete failure, it ended up being super successful.  During the evening I spent about 3 hours practicing for Yell Like Hell, and once that was over, I started studying for a test that I had the next day, and I wrote a 4 page paper.  So I just had this horrible feeling that I was going to fail the test, or the paper or something….but I ended up with A-’s on both of them.  Holy smokes…I know.  And this week during my all-nighter I studied for an exam the entire time, but I don’t know how I did on it yet, so we will have to see about that one.  But….through both of these all-nighters….I have learned a few things.

  • Don’t pull an all-nighter alone.  The first time I was with two of my sorority sisters, and the second time I was with one of my roommates, and this way we were able to hold each other accountable, and help each other out throughout the night.  If I took a 20 minute power nap, then I had other people there ready to pull me off the couch before I slept away the rest of the night.  This way we also could take short breaks and get each other snacks.  Which leads me to my next point…
  • Have plenty of food available.  Not only is food delicious, but it also helps you stay awake.  Let’s be serious…who doesn’t love toast with nutella at 4:30 a.m.??  And this week I decided to do Halloween candy instead….which was a great choice…especially since we have a plethora of it in my room currently.
  • Stay away from comfortable surfaces.  During my first all-nighter I sat in a wooden chair at a table the entire time…which made it much harder to get comfortable and fall asleep.  The second time, I was on my futon all night…..which made me just want to lay down and curl up…the entire time.  So stick to the floor, wood, or anything that you do not enjoy sleeping on.
  • After you get everything done….reward yourself.  Since you are already sleep deprived…you need something.  Mainly caffeine…but really anything will do it.  This is my personal favorite….
