About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

Decisions… Decisions…

If you are a student anywhere from a senior in high school to a senior in college….right now is probably decision time for you.  Whether you are deciding where you want to go to college, or where you are spending your summer, or what you are going to do now that you aren’t in college anymore, making decisions is hard….really hard.  I speak from experience, because I had exactly one day to make a HUGE decision for this point in my life last week.  So, since thinking about decision making is fresh in my mind, here is some advice for how to make very thorough decisions that you can be proud of…

  • Do your homework. Educate yourself on all of the options, and understand what you would be getting yourself into in each area.  This way, you know what each option entails.
  • Make a pro-con list. Since you just laid out everything about all of the options, now you can gauge what is a pro and what is a con, and possibly even rank them in importance.  You can do this by giving each a score from 1-10 on which is more important, or you can just rank them.
  • Talk to people that you know and whose opinions you respect. This is something that I think is the most helpful, because sometimes others see opportunities that you would never consider.  They can also encourage you to make a choice that will help you grow, especially when you are afraid of making a decision like that.  I love getting the opinion of others, and trust me, it can be VERY helpful.
  • Think about the future. Which option will help you get to where you want to go with your life, or at least closer?  This can sometimes be hard to see, but it is very useful, and something you should keep in mind!
  • Go with your gut. Usually what happens is that you have a gut feeling, then you try to talk yourself out of it.  After this individuals tend to sway back to their gut feeling, or maybe they talk themselves out of the option so effectively that they they end up picking it.
  • Once you make your decision, be proud of it! If you make your decision and then think, I wish I would have gone with the other option…you will drive yourself crazy.  So do yourself a favor, and stick with what you decided, because it is probably what is right for you!

That is all of the tips that I have for right now….and even though I said that I had a big decision to make….I am not sharing the decision until a later date, so check back for an update on my life!

If you are deciding about what school to go to....it never hurts to pick a school that looks like this...

When you come to visit Butler…Part IV – Butler Edition

After you have explored Indianapolis….I think that it would round out your trip nicely if you came back to Butler…just for one more look.   Here are some areas on campus that I love…and that you should pay special attention to when you are on your tour….

Atherton Union...

Atherton is basically Butler’s hub for student organizations and student life.  Stop by the Butler Bookstore, our campus Starbucks, or just hang out in one of the building’s many soft spaces…..then you can head to Holcomb Gardens…which makes Butler one of the nation’s most romantic/beautiful campuses.

My favorite place at Butler...Holcomb Pond...

Another part of Holcomb Gardens....

After that…it is only natural that you go to see Hinkle Fieldhouse….since it is rather important in Butler’s history.  This is where Hoosiers was filmed, and it is home to many of our sports teams.  Games at Hinkle are amazing…and definitely second to none.

Hinkle Fieldhouse....

After Hinkle, you should go back to the center of campus, to Star Fountain.  Mostly….because I love Star Fountain….but also because if it is even remotely warm outside, the area around the fountain (also known as the Mall) will be covered with students….and you will be able to see what Butler is really like.  People will be playing different sports on the mall, just laying out, or doing homework…but mostly we just love being able to enjoy our beautiful campus that we love so much…..

Star Fountain....

I hope that you have enjoyed the little guide to visiting Butler that I put together….and that you might take some of my suggestions when you come to visit Butler!

The Fabulous Life….

In college….every day is a little bit different.  But when I was in high school (and even at the beginning of my Freshman year) I wondered what college students do all day…..especially when they aren’t in class.  So, here is a run down of what a typical day is like for me….so that you can have a little bit of an idea of what college life is like.  :)

  • 7:00- My alarm goes off.
  • 7:15- I finally get up…then get ready for class.
  • 7:50- I run to class….because I really don’t want to be late again…..like I usually am.
  • 8:00- Operations Management….
  • 9:00- Religions of the World….
  • 10:00- I go back to my room…where I check my emails and clean up all of my stuff I throw around everywhere.  I like to call this “figuring out my life”, and it has been a rather frequent activity for me in the past month.
  • 11:00- I work in the Speakers Lab
  • 12:00- I eat lunch…..and then usually chill out and talk to people for awhile.
  • 1:00- Once I realize that I really need to do something with my life…I get my stuff together and go to Starbucks.  This way I don’t sit with my computer in my room and watch every TV show that I have missed on Hulu.  Instead, I go to Starbucks where I blog or study….and I usually get distracted by talking to people.  At least it is enjoyable being distracted that way!
  • 3:00- Babysitting time!  A large amount of girls at Butler babysit…since it is a great way to get off campus, get your mind off of school, and make some money while you are doing it!  I like it because it gives me hope for my future…and reminds me that life after college will be great.  Otherwise…I would just want to stay here forever.
  • 6:00- Head back to campus…have dinner…and “figure out my life” again.
  • 7:00- I usually have group meetings around this time…because we tend to always have projects due on Thursday mornings.  Warning:  Butler (especially the College of Business) loves group work.  Yes, it will prep me for my future….but it gets frustrating since you have to do everything with someone else….never alone.  Haha.
  • 9:00- Either I study…or go to a meeting…or I distract myself from studying.
  • 11:00- Meet with girls in my sorority to do a devotional….we have bible study once a week, we pray for our house one morning a month, and we do devotionals together every night at 11.  :)   It either lasts 5 minutes, or as long as 30 minutes.  Completely depending on how much I want to procrastinate, and how talkative we are.
  • 11:30- Either I study….or I distract myself from studying…or my roommates distract me from studying.  One of them likes to “bop” around….and sing…and just be talkative….so she is usually the most successful at that.  But last night we distracted each other by cleaning up our room (that still has Halloween decorations up…and that has decorations from our Homecoming Lawn Decs up as well)….and we helped each other pick out outfits for class.  This was a total first for us….because we aren’t those girls who plan out every bit of every outfit every day…..but we have just decided to start to wear the clothes that we have that we don’t ever wear.  What an idea!
  • 1:00 a.m.- I finally get to sleep…..after I get ready for bed….and try to read for class even though I fall asleep while I do it.

Phew.  So that is a day in my life in a nutshell.  Don’t worry though….I have more than two classes!  My other days are more busy than this one….I just like this one the best!  And since all the leaves are almost gone…I will leave you with this photo from when they were still here….

I love Holcomb Pond.....
