About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

Christmas – Check.

This year was officially the strangest Christmas Break that I have ever had, mostly because I was the only kid around my house for most of the time.  I was an only child for most of break because my sister and her husband didn’t get to our house until the 27th…so we postponed all of our Christmas traditions…like I mentioned in a previous blog.  Not going to lie…I threw myself a pretty big pity party for a few days.  Eventually…my sister and brother-in-law got here…and everything was just as it should be.  We opened gifts, made our usual Christmas dinner, had my Mom’s family over, and just had an all around great time.

Since this year was already turning out to be completely different than other years…I wondered how many things would change.  Don’t worry though… my family pulled through and we had a traditional family Christmas.  There are several things that go into our traditional family Christmas…

  • Watching Christmas Vacation
  • Renting tons of other movies
  • Sleeping…a lot
  • Laying on the couch
  • Eating awesome food (mostly meat)
  • Fighting

Don’t worry…there wasn’t too much fighting…my sister and I just like to show our love in very different ways….

Also…one of the biggest successes over Christmas Break was that I officially got my little cousins hooked on Vera Bradley.  Sorry family…you’ll really hate me in about 5-10 years…but aren’t they just precious??!!

2011 Year in Review: Wedding Edition

One of the biggest events to happen in 2011 for my family happened back in July, when my older sister, Natalie, got married.  (You can read the blogs about the wedding here and here.)  It’s been awhile since the wedding, but since Natalie and John (her husband) are in town visiting for Christmas, we are ordering photos and going through them all together for the first time.  Our cousins Adrienne and Dan were the photographers, and they did such a great job that I thought I would share some of my favorites with all of you.  Here we go…

My family…

The wedding party during the ceremony… (notice the aisle runner – my sister and I crafted that the week before the wedding, and you can read all about that… here)

Natalie and John, walking back down the aisle after they got hitched….

The wedding party…

The cake and the reception venue… (they had a morning wedding and a brunch reception, so the skylight was a beautiful touch)

My sister, brother-in-law, and I…

The beautiful bride and all of the bridesmaids…

The wedding party…

At the time…planking was HUGE.  So…we planked.

Thanks for doing such a great job on the photos, Adrienne and Dan!  If you like what you see…check out the Rowe Portrait Studios website!

Merry Christmas…with a twist

Merry Christmas everyone!  Even though it really is Christmas…it just doesn’t feel like it to me right now.  This is mostly because we’re not quite following our Christmas traditions in any way this year….for several reasons:

  1. Christmas is on a Sunday
  2. My sister and brother-in-law (who live in Albuquerque) are back home to visit, but they won’t be coming to our house until the 27th (Tuesday).

The biggest game-changer is the second one…because we don’t want to do any of our Christmas-y things until they get here.  And since they are bringing most of my parents Christmas gifts, I don’t want to just open gifts by myself, so we’re waiting until they get here to do the whole present thing.  There are a few other things that we are waiting to do until they get here…like…

Putting up our farm set…

This is a Flint Christmas tradition, because when we were little, we would get a new piece for the farm set each year.  So, once our parents would start their Christmas afternoon naps, we would put on the Disney movie we got for Christmas, and pull out the farm set.  Now we still do it when our parents start their Christmas afternoon naps, but without the Disney movie.

Putting out our farm set last Christmas...

Watching Christmas Vacation entirely too many times…

This is our favorite Christmas movie by far, so we watch it a lot.  Back before my sister and I got entirely too busy for our own good, we would watch it every day….or at least once a week between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I even thought that we might have to stop this tradition…because I couldn’t find my copy of Christmas Vacation when I was still at school.  Don’t worry though, I found it when I got home…so I’ll still be able to watch Clark Griswold more than any normal person should.

The one positive of my sister and brother-in-law’s arrival postponing Christmas for our family is that this way, we still get plenty of delicious meals.  We aren’t just going to eat normal food on Christmas Day, so we’ll probably have my personal favorite…steak…for our Christmas dinner.  Well I’m off to go enjoy Part 1 of my Christmas…. Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Killer UNO – a dangerously fun game.

Every time that I come home for a long break, my friends all get together for our favorite game…Killer UNO.  If you have stuck with the normal, boring version of UNO and you haven’t played Killer UNO, I’m sorry.  It makes things so much more exciting…and entertaining of course.  Basically, it takes most of the traditional rules and throws them out the window, so you can play a card pretty much at any time, even if it isn’t your turn.  Combine the more fun rules with some really competitive people…and you get a legit game.

Two of my friends during a Killer UNO game…

A few nights ago we had the first Killer UNO tournament, and for the first time…ever…I won.  Well, I didn’t really win, but instead I was in the top 2 for our group.  There were so many of us that we had two games going at once, and it is really hard to get a final winner overall when you are playing UNO.  So we just considered a few of us winners, since we were as close as you could get without playing for an entire night.

Hanging out with all of my friends from home was so much fun, and I can’t wait to see what other fun things we get to do over break.  More UNO, going out to eat, having intense Just Dance tournaments….the options are basically endless…and the fun is obviously just beginning!  I have exactly two weeks of break left…so I can’t wait!

Holiday Gift Giving 101

Every year, right after school lets out and before Christmas Day, my family gets a large number of various gifts.  My Dad is a farmer, so we get gifts from businesses that he works with frequently, like fertilizer companies, or farm equipment companies, etc.  And my Mom is a teacher, so she gets gifts from the PTO, from her students, and from other teachers at school.  Sometimes this means we get a wide variety of gifts, but sometimes it means that we get a lot of the same gift….like we did this year.  For my family, this year is the year of the Candy.

*DISCLAIMER* – I love all of the gifts we got….because they are seriously delicious and have made my day every day over the past week….but I think I will have to work out for about 5 hours a day if I keep this up….or I might just replace every food group with Buddy the Elf’s four main food groups

So back to the gifts we have gotten…..here is an explanation….and a photo.

All of the candy....

  • The box on the left at the top, with the bow on it, is from Libs.  They make the most heavenly turtles known to man….which is what is in this box.
  • Below that box is the large gold box, which is the box of candy that always comes first to our house….so every year it is the box that we sit around and wait for.  It is from Wolf’s Homemade Candies….and inside there is an amazing mix of every kind of chocolate you could ever want.
  • In the middle is a round tin, with homemade candies from one of the students in my Mom’s class.  They are delicious, and they have been my candy of choice for the past two days.
  • The white box on the right in the middle is from Charlie’s, which is a local candy shop.  What is amazing about this box is that it came with a bag of their famous caramel corn.  Basically, the goodness keeps on coming.
  • Below that box is a box of caramels from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory….which aren’t my favorites, but they are still rather amazing.

So the moral of the story is….even though candies are amazing and delicious…I highly encourage you to give gifts to your loved ones that are not made entirely of sugar.  Just thinking about how much junk I have eaten in the past week and how much I am about to consume in the next few days make me feel like my teeth are rotting out right now.  But….somehow I love it.  Every last bit.  :)

Christmas lights, Santa, and reindeer…all at the Indy Zoo

So last week after finals ended, one of my goals was to experience Indianapolis at Christmastime.  I have always wanted to go to Christmas at the Zoo, but because finals and Christmas always coincide, I have never been able to go.  So this year when a good friend of mine told me that a few of them were going on Wednesday night – the night that I finished my finals – I knew that I had to go.  Basically, it was magical.  My pictures don’t do it justice….but here is a glimpse of our Holiday excursion.  :)

The Holiday Dolphin Show.....

This tree reminded us of Eywa from Avatar....

I thought these were awful cute....

Basically, they put lights on everything at the Zoo.....

During our trip to the Zoo, we got to see Santa, his reindeer, a dolphin show, and all of the other Zoo necessities that were open.  Not all of the animals were out, since you know, it was freezing outside and there was snow on the ground, but we got to see the ones that were inside, and the ones that actually like it to be cold outside.

After spending half of the Christmas season thus far busy with meetings, projects, and studying for tests….Christmas at the Zoo was the best way to get into the Christmas spirit…and fast.  After our visit, I was ready to shop, decorate, and to get home so I could enjoy all of our Christmas traditions at home.  So, I highly recommend going to the Zoo at this time of the year….its rather magical….and who doesn’t love a little magic at Christmastime?

Finals: The Aftermath

I have officially been done with finals for five days now.  The good part is that I am a real person again…but last Tuesday-Thursday…my room looked like some random college student hadn’t done anything besides study for the past week….because that is what had happened.  Except, imagine that times four…because that is how many of us lived in my room.  Basically, it was horrible.  Check this out.

All of my cups from the week of finals. Apparently I forgot how to throw things away...and I put them all on the bookshelf so they didn't clutter my workspace.

My area of the room....looking as cluttered as ever...

And unfortunately, finals did not only wreak havoc on my room….but it also took a pretty serious toll on my roommate, Meghan.

She was writing her final paper of the semester....it had been a rough couple of days.

But luckily, we all survived, and our room somehow got back to a normal state after it was all over.  It did take a rather long time to get back to this though, because of course I made plans right after finals that didn’t allow me to clean stuff right away…or even the next day.  See, usually I am ready to head out as soon as I am done with finals…but this year I decided to stay in town for an extra day.  My plan was to go out to lunch after my last final, then to babysit, finish Christmas shopping, and then leisurely get packed.  But of course, ten thousand other things came up, and then a massive ice storm hit southern Indiana (where I’m from), so I couldn’t exactly go home the next day.  Then as I started to try to clean up….and it ended up taking me about 4x as long as I originally planned.  So instead of making it home by 2 p.m. on Thursday (my original plan)….I made it home at 8 p.m. on Friday.  Apparently the combination of finals and my life made my room much harder to clean and pack up (we have to pack up basically everything in our rooms for break so we can move rooms when we get back), which is why it took an entire day longer than I had originally planned.  But…I made it through finals…and I made it home….and best of all…I am a real person again.  Sort of.  Now watching TV and relaxing on my couch have taken over my life…and I will just let this happen for the next 3 weeks….I love the life of a college student!

Finals: The Plan of Attack

Somehow, the past four months have completely flown by, and it is almost time for finals.  This is the first semester of my college career so far where I am not wishing that it would be over right now….because I really am enjoying my classes and everything that I am doing right now.  But, it is time for it all to come to an end….so that means that I have to take finals.  I am now a rather seasoned player when it comes to studying for finals….since I am a junior and all…and since I am a business major.  Where some majors have only tests, or others have only presentations or papers, business majors are the “lucky” ones.  We get to have EVERYTHING.  For instance, today I had a group paper/project/binder due in my Marketing class, and we also gave a presentation.  Next Tuesday morning, we have our final in Marketing.  So while I should probably be thankful that I am definitely capable of doing any of these kinds of work, it also stinks because there is just a TON of work.

Luckily, there is only one more assignment in one class that is standing in between me and finals.  That is my presentation in Business and Professional Communication.  I am actually really looking forward to it, because we were allowed to pick any controversial (or not) business topic to present on, so I am going to be persuading a company to implement blogging into their marketing plan, based on the idea that blogging is WAY better than Twitter.  Needless to say, I am super excited about it.  :)

Once I am finished with my last presentation…I will be free to study my heart out for finals.  For the past day or so, I have been formulating a plan for them in my head….so here it is….

  • Wednesday-Operations management…reading…then working on a study guide
  • Thursday-Review the previous day’s stuff….then add on marketing
  • Friday-Review the past two day’s stuff….then add on business law
  • Saturday-My cousin is getting married this day….so I will be discussing religion the entire way there and back with my sister.
  • Sunday-I will alternate between operations management and religion all day…
  • Monday-After my religion final ends, my life will be marketing….until 8 a.m. the next morning.
  • Tuesday-After my marketing final ends, my life will be business law…until 8 a.m. the next morning.

So now, I am going to plunge headfirst in the dark abyss that is studying for finals….wish me luck!

Me...Attempting to study during finals about a year ago....Apparently it helps to try to eat your necklace during it....

And the Countdown Begins….

Today is the first day back to school after Thanksgiving Break.  So, naturally, today is a struggle.  I’ve been done with classes for hours already, so my day is looking up, but I have so much to do that I will be hard at work on my computer for the rest of eternity.

Ok….that was a serious exaggeration….but do you blame me?  I have 2.5 weeks left in the semester, but I have to start preparing for 4 finals, write 2 papers that will be at least a combined 20 pages in length (don’t worry…one is a group paper…and I’m being dramatic), and put together/perfect 2 presentations.  And fortunately, in addition to this, I get to do all kinds of things to finish off the year with all my clubs…such as planning things and going to tons of meetings/club elections/Christmas parties.

Really, I am excited to be back at school…don’t let my previous paragraph fool you…and luckily I have adjusted rather quickly to being back.  That is my least favorite thing about each break….coming back.  Once you get used to being at home and hanging out with your family, it is time to go back to school….where you will most likely get a rude awakening.  The last day of each break for me is usually long and filled with entirely too much stuff.  Between doing normal Sunday activities (going to church and having lunch with my family), packing up everything, driving back, and unpacking….it is usually rather intense.  And somehow, in addition to doing that yesterday, I edited a paper, wrote part of another paper, and did other homework as well.  Yeah….I was proud of myself.  And it was the perfect way to get back in the groove of school again…because by the end of the night, it felt like any other Sunday night where I am finishing up things that are due the next morning, and trying to make my room not look like a tornado tore through it.

But, I can now officially start counting down the days until Christmas Break….so only 9 more days of class….and 16 more days until I have no homework, for a whole month!  Thank you, Butler, for the best Christmas present ever!

I had the joy of seeing this beautiful sight over break....be sure to check back soon for a blog about what it exactly is....besides my favorite part of Christmas time at home...
