About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

Do professors understand what we do with our days??

Sometimes…when we get overwhelmed with school…we have to cut back on other things in order to get everything done.  This could mean not going to a meeting or class…but most of the time…it means that we stop showering.  I know, it’s gross…but it’s how we get by.  A few weeks ago, one of my roommates was having a really busy week, and she didn’t shower….or really change her clothes for a few days.  We all understand, because we’ve been there too…but one of her professors was legitimately concerned about her well-being…since she looked like she hadn’t showered or changed clothes for a few days.

Sometimes hiding under a blanket is almost as helpful as just not showering....

This situation raises the question: Do professors understand what we do with our days??  Do they understand how much work goes into each of the projects they assign, and that other professors are assigning projects at the same time as well??  Well, just as a friendly reminder to all, here is a breakdown of what a normal day looks like in my life (this is a Tuesday schedule):

  • 6:30 a.m. – Get up and get ready for work
  • 8:00 a.m. – Arrive at work
  • 12:00 p.m. – Drive back to school quickly…
  • 12:30 p.m. – Grab a quick lunch, before I walk to class…
  • 1:00 p.m. – Class
  • 2:30 p.m. – Drive back to work
  • 6:00 p.m. – Leave work and drive back to school
  • 6:30 p.m. – Grab a quick dinner…
  • 7:00 p.m. – Meeting time (usually BUSF)
  • 8:00 p.m. – Check my email, send out a ton of emails
  • 9:00 p.m. – Meeting time (usually AKPsi)
  • 10:00 p.m. – Go back to my room and put on sweats, start figuring out what I need to study…and start that.
  • 12:00 a.m. – Keep working…
  • 3:00 a.m. – Maybe….time to go to sleep.

Keep in mind…this isn’t a schedule for test weeks, or weeks when we have papers due, etc.  This is a normal day in a normal week.  Yeah….college sounds great…doesn’t it???  Don’t get me wrong, I do love college…..but I guess the moral of the blog is….don’t judge us when we don’t shower…because sometimes that extra 15 minutes of sleep is totally worth it.

When is life busier, during college or after college??

To say that my life is busy is basically an understatement.  Between work (at my internship and on campus), class, meetings, and homework, I am busy from 7:00 a.m. until at least 11:00 or 12:00 every night, and even later when I have projects, papers, or tests (which is every week).  Now don’t get me wrong, I love being busy, but I truly can’t wait until I graduate so that I will possibly have less to do for once.  The thought of coming home from work and actually being able to do things that a real person does, rather than reading an outrageously large textbook on Health Care Econ or writing a paper about the global issues facing your company makes me so excited I could basically explode.

This is how I have felt since my freshman year…and I have been getting even more excited about it since the real world is closer now than it ever has been.  But now, at least once a week in my Sales class, my professor warns us to appreciate how much time we have now, while we are in college, because things will change drastically when we leave.  For me, this is terrifying.  I have been looking forward to graduating for the last 3 years, hoping that when I’m done with school I might sleep more than 4 hours a night, or I might be able to just sit and watch a movie without doing 10 other things at the same time.  I guess I shouldn’t worry about this now, I should just hang out and enjoy my crazy busy life as it is right now.  And in 7 months when I graduate, and (hopefully) start a real person job, then I will just see what happens.  If I am busier, I’ll handle it, and if I’m less busy… I’ll celebrate.  I shouldn’t worry about it… but I just can’t help but wonder… you know?

Will my iCal always be this overloaded and colorful???

Turn that frown upside down….

This week has definitely been a difficult week for everyone…including people at Butler and people not at Butler.  It was intense here because the semester is really starting to pick up right now…so tests, papers, and projects are all in full swing…cue breakdown mode.  For everyone else….I guess it was just stressful…for various reasons.  But because it has been so intense, this blog is going to be dedicated to simply providing ways for people to chill out, relax, smile, and have some fun.

  1. Watch Jessica’s Daily Affirmation.  It always does the trick for me.
  2. Watch Kittens Inspired by Kittens.  Ditto.
  3. Start using Pinterest.  It will bring beautiful things into your life…no matter what.
  4. Watch Modern Family. There are currently 3 episodes on Hulu….and all 3 are epic.
  5. Go to Starbucks…and get a fall drink.  Today my plan is to go and chill out at Starbucks with a Pumpkin Spice Latte….or a Chai Tea Latte.
  6. Just sit…trust me…it’s great.
  7. Walk around one of your favorite places…for me…that’s Butler.  It’s just to beautiful to not love it.

I love my school....

Isn't it beautiful???

So…if this has been a tough week for you…do yourself a favor…and take a break.  It’s Friday….you should enjoy yourself!

How do grown-ups do it??

This is my first summer to ever have a 9-5 job, and it is exhausting.  I get up, go to work, work all day, come home, fix dinner, blog, catch up on TV, clean the apartment, maybe see some friends, work out, and go to bed.  Then I get up the next day and do it all over again.  Between trying to get everything in order to live a normal life and doing other fun things too…there is no time!!!  I legitimately find myself wondering about how people with kids live their lives without going crazy…because I’m about to go crazy just taking care of myself!

I probably should give myself a slight break…because normal people usually have weekends, and aren’t as social as interns are.  The group of Vera Bradley interns usually has a social event at least once a week if not twice, so that takes up additional time….even though it is tons of fun.  And on weekends, I am usually on the road, driving to see my family or my friends, and if I’m not, then I’m working on papers for my internship class.  All of this stuff that I find myself doing makes me wish that I had a normal life.  A 9-5 job, something to do on weekends every once in awhile, and a place to live for longer than 3 months, so that I don’t feel like I’m constantly getting settled in.  Even though I’m not really a nomad anymore, I still feel slightly nomadic, but partially permanent.  It’s a strange feeling, I’m not going to lie.  But on the bright side…all of my Vera Bradley bags are getting used…a lot.  And this weekend, I get to try out my newest one…the Grand Traveler.  Is it bad that I’m justifying my crazy busy life just because I get to use a new bag?  Yeah, I know it’s not healthy….but the bag is really cute…

Happy Snails makes me so happy...

There just isn’t enough time…ever.

There are many times during the school year when I don’t have time to do everything that I need to do.  Usually, this is because I need to drive somewhere, whether it is home or to visit a friend, and there just isn’t enough time to do everything that is necessary.  It’s at times like this when I would love it if Indiana had a train system or a bus system or any sort of public transportation.  Then I could pack my stuff, and just do my homework the entire way home.  So Indiana officials, get on it.  I would greatly appreciate it.

This would have come in handy this last weekend, when I went home for my sister’s bachelorette party, and I had a paper to write for my internship class, and other little things to do.  In the end, there just wasn’t enough time for everything…hence why I didn’t get back to Fort Wayne until 1 a.m. on Sunday night.  It was a long drive back, and there were quite a few times when I felt like stopping to take a nap, because that 4 1/2 hour drive to Fort Wayne gets pretty long and tiring after awhile.  If only I could have just worked the entire way home and back…I would have everything done that I needed, and it would be great!  But since there wasn’t a train, or a person that could have just driven me back to the Fort, I am slowly but surely getting caught up.  Maybe….just maybe…I will have everything done by next week.  I doubt it…but maybe I’ll be lucky???

Even though it is a hassle...I do love the beautiful drive that I have to Indy and back....

Where did the semester go???

Last night…I looked at my iCal….big mistake.  I was talking to my parents about what is going on for the next month or so…and I realized that basically, the semester is over.  And, unfortunately, I won’t be able to sleep for more than 5 hours a night until the semester is over.  I’m probably over exaggerating as usual there…but really…I’m somewhat freaking out.  Here is why…

  • I have a HUGE paper due at the end of April, and I have decided what general topic I will be using, but I need to narrow it down.  And I hate making decisions.
  • I have a couple tests in the next two weeks….just thinking about tests makes me nervous.
  • Spring has arrived, and with that has come busy weekends….every weekend.  There are banquets, philanthropy events, formals, Spring Sports Spectacular, and Easter….and somehow I need to find a way to do all of that…plus study and relax.
  • My sister is getting married in 4 months….and there is much to be done.  Planning a bridal shower….or better yet…finding a date that works for the bridal shower…is going to be rather intense.
  • It is the middle of March….and I’m not sure what I’m doing with my summer yet.  And I hate uncertainty more than the average person.

But, even though I’m not sure how I will handle all of this just yet, and I don’t know how it will all work out, I am just going to remind myself that I am on Spring Break for now….and I will decide how to make everything in my life work out…one step at a time.  Plus….it is spring….and I’m at home….which means that we have an abundance of baby calves right now….which always makes the world better.

This one is my favorite....the little white face gets me every time...

When can I become a real person again?

Now that I have been a college student for you know…about 2.5 years….I have started this vicious cycle of being a real person….then getting bogged down with stuff….then recuperating from being bogged down….then becoming a real person again….and so on.  Usually my “being bogged down” stage lasts while I’m at school, and then then I go home for a break/weekend where I usually recuperate, and then I become a real person again just in time to go back to school.

So, I was a real person…..about 3 weeks ago.  Then I came back to school, had to move back into my sorority house, then move out of my sorority house to be a recruitment counselor (we live in a hotel during recruitment), then I moved back into my house, and then I started classes.  And now, with no school breaks rapidly approaching….I have no idea how I am going to deal with this situation.  Either I need to be really productive for a week or two to get everything done before a weekend, or I need to figure out a weekend when I can just not do anything….so I can recuperate from the intensity that is my life during the week.  Just to give you an idea of how outrageous my life is at times…check this out.

Here are all of the cups that began to accumulate on my desk during Finals week this past semester. Due to the danger that comes with having cups full of water/liquid near a computer...I just moved them all to the bookshelf. It works, right?

This is slightly outrageous….because Finals week is quite possibly the most intense week of the year….but it does illustrate my point quite well I believe.  When my life gets busy…I respond by trying to save time in any way possible.  This usually ends up being through not showering….or not cleaning up things….or not sleeping.  But….the good thing is that I always get everything done on time, and I always do my best….so I guess it is worth it?  This semester, however, I am going to try my absolute hardest to not get to this point.  So I will return to this “being a real person” topic frequently….since it is something that most Butler students have trouble with.  What can I say?  We just love to be involved:)
