About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

Semester #7 – Check

Ever since I started college, I have thought that my life could not get any busier, and that the next semester would be so much easier.  But, of course…it never let up…and I think that it actually got worse over time.  I love being busy…but when I look back over the last 7 semesters…I wonder how I ever made it through…

  • Fall 2008 – 17 credit hours, I pledged Alpha Kappa Psi, and I joined the Butler Dance Team
  • Spring 2009 – 17 credit hours, I joined Alpha Phi, and basketball season with the Dance Team was super busy

The 2008-2009 Butler Dance Team

  • Fall 2009 – 19 credit hours, I lived in Alpha Phi for the first time, the Real Business Experience ruled my life, and I started working in Speakers Lab
  • Spring 2010 – 18 credit hours, my Law & Ethics class ruled my life, and I started having leadership positions in clubs
  • Fall 2010 – 16 credit hours, and I’m sure something took up all of my time…I can’t remember what it was….
  • Spring 2011 – 16 credit hours, and I was searching for an internship with every free moment of every day

So this brings us to now, the end of Fall 2011…my 7th semester of college.  I only took 12 hours (which is the lightest load you can take as a full-time student), but I worked 22 hours/week at my internship, and between blogging and working in Speakers Lab I worked an extra 5 hours/week.  Also, when you factor in the time that it took me to drive to my internship every day, you can add on another 7 hours each week, so altogether….I worked around 34 hours every week.  This basically meant that I had no time to spare when I was on campus..or period…because I was either working, or in class.  But now, it is over….and I officially fulfilled my internship requirements!  I never thought that I would, because I had to work for 300 hours throughout the semester, and it took me a LOT longer to do that than I originally thought.  So last week during finals, I worked as much as I could, and I ended up making it to 300 right at the end of the day on the last day of the week.  SUCCESS!

So now…all I have to do is make it through 15 more hours this Spring.  This will be a breeze…I hope?

Do professors understand what we do with our days??

Sometimes…when we get overwhelmed with school…we have to cut back on other things in order to get everything done.  This could mean not going to a meeting or class…but most of the time…it means that we stop showering.  I know, it’s gross…but it’s how we get by.  A few weeks ago, one of my roommates was having a really busy week, and she didn’t shower….or really change her clothes for a few days.  We all understand, because we’ve been there too…but one of her professors was legitimately concerned about her well-being…since she looked like she hadn’t showered or changed clothes for a few days.

Sometimes hiding under a blanket is almost as helpful as just not showering....

This situation raises the question: Do professors understand what we do with our days??  Do they understand how much work goes into each of the projects they assign, and that other professors are assigning projects at the same time as well??  Well, just as a friendly reminder to all, here is a breakdown of what a normal day looks like in my life (this is a Tuesday schedule):

  • 6:30 a.m. – Get up and get ready for work
  • 8:00 a.m. – Arrive at work
  • 12:00 p.m. – Drive back to school quickly…
  • 12:30 p.m. – Grab a quick lunch, before I walk to class…
  • 1:00 p.m. – Class
  • 2:30 p.m. – Drive back to work
  • 6:00 p.m. – Leave work and drive back to school
  • 6:30 p.m. – Grab a quick dinner…
  • 7:00 p.m. – Meeting time (usually BUSF)
  • 8:00 p.m. – Check my email, send out a ton of emails
  • 9:00 p.m. – Meeting time (usually AKPsi)
  • 10:00 p.m. – Go back to my room and put on sweats, start figuring out what I need to study…and start that.
  • 12:00 a.m. – Keep working…
  • 3:00 a.m. – Maybe….time to go to sleep.

Keep in mind…this isn’t a schedule for test weeks, or weeks when we have papers due, etc.  This is a normal day in a normal week.  Yeah….college sounds great…doesn’t it???  Don’t get me wrong, I do love college…..but I guess the moral of the blog is….don’t judge us when we don’t shower…because sometimes that extra 15 minutes of sleep is totally worth it.

It’s The Final Countdown….

This is my senior year….and this is my final introduction post on my Butler blog.  (This is my 4th year as a blogger….and yes, I am getting nostalgic….about a blog post.)  Just in case you haven’t read my blog much, or even if you have, this will hopefully give you an idea of what kind of things I will be writing about this year…so get excited!

I'm obviously rather excited for the year...

This year I am a senior Marketing major, which means that I am finally taking classes that I love (after three years of Finance, Accounting, and other things that aren’t so fun), and I also have a Communication Studies minor, which means that I give lots of presentations.  I really enjoy both of these areas, because the faculty in both departments are just amazing (as most Butler professors are), and they give me a chance to try completely different things, like taking classes that combine the study of leadership with developing presentation skills, and classes all about retailing or sales.  As a business major, I will complete two internships before I graduate, one of which I completed this summer with Vera Bradley, and another that I am doing now, with Slingshot SEO.  I am so glad that I have both taken care and planned now, because the last thing that I want is to have to be searching for a post-grad job and an internship at the same time….it’s hard enough just finding one!

I am definitely what you would classify as an over committed student, because I love being involved…a little too much.  I’m in a sorority, Alpha Phi, where I’m one of the New Member Educators (so I am helping our new members with their transition to sorority life), which means that I’m also living in the house with 75 other girls (so I don’t have to cook for myself…always a plus…I’m all for prolonging the inevitable).  I’m also in Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), BAMA (Butler American Marketing Association), and BUSF (Butler University Student Foundation), among other things.  Those are my main clubs for my senior year – and I am so excited to somewhat narrow down a list of about 12, to 4.

When I’m not working, in meetings, or in class, I love hanging out at Starbucks, crafting, watching TV, finding good sweet tea in Indianapolis, and sleeping.  Since I really don’t have much free time to spend doing these things….I don’t do them all a lot….including sleeping.  Nonetheless, I do what I can…and I love it.

Don't worry...I do sleep...sometimes.

This year is going to be a great one….even though it will be outrageously busy.  Even though I might have a breakdown or two…I know that I am just going to make the most of my time here at Butler….and blog about every moment!  :)

Everything is ok now, Grey’s Anatomy and The Office are back!!!!

Once again, I have lost track of time.  This seems to be a common theme of mine.  The past week has been pretty intense with classes, and my first few tests, and most importantly, the return of all of my favorite primetime shows!  :)   The Office and Greys Anatomy started on Thursday, and I’m currently watching Brothers and Sisters, but I missed the beginning of Desperate Housewives, so don’t tell me about what happened until I get the chance to see it online tomorrow!

This weekend I was busy with things for my Freshman Business Experience class… on Friday we went to a Forum with recent Butler grads, and they told us about what they do now, about their internships, and about their experiences here at Butler.  That was really cool, especially to hear what advice they had for us…for instance, what they wished that they had done while they were here and things of that sort.  Then on Saturday we finished our Get Real Weekend that we started two weeks ago, so we got to go out to the high and low ropes courses all day.  :)   It was an awesome day…and a great opportunity for our groups to form a bond and learn more about each other.  My personal favorite activity was the “Mine Field” where we had to guide a blindfolded person through a “Mine Field” (which was an area with a bunch of random toys scattered everywhere….my favorite was a stuffed penguin, closely followed by the rubber pig)  it was challenging, yet still fun because watching a blindfolded person tiptoe and shuffle through a mass of toys is always pretty funny.  :)   Then later that day we went on the high ropes course, which I wasn’t looking forward to because I am a HUGE wimp when it comes to heights, and after standing there with the harness and the helmet on for like thirty minutes, I decided that it just wasn’t going to happen.  I had tried something similar to it before, and it wasn’t the best experience…..mainly because of how much of a wimp I am.  But, all in all, it was an awesome day….and we learned so much.  :)   I have a video of the high ropes course that my friend Josh helped me out with (since I was a wimp)  that will be up sometime….:)  I might fill you in on more things that we did this weekend sometime….because there were so many activities that we did that I loved…it was basically a fun-filled day/weekend!

So this past week I realized that I am back to my usual “too-busy” self.  I interviewed for Alpha Kappa Psi (a business fraternity), and I am now a pledge, which is really exciting!!  But now that adds yet another activity to my list.  I love it being that way though.  :)   Having downtime makes me nervous….so I just make sure that I don’t have any.  lol…..for instance, on Wednesday night I didn’t have any meetings or anything, and I felt a massive cold/sinus thing coming on so I didn’t think I should go to the HRC, so I sat in my room and watched TV for the first time all year.  It was crazy.  So I pulled out a book and did some homework while I was watching TV.  That made me feel a little bit better….lol.

Last night my boyfriend Scott came to visit, and we went with some of my friends to the Old Spaghetti Factory….which I highly recommend.  It was pretty delicious.  :)   Except that they gave me a chinese food box to put my leftovers in??  I don’t understand what that was all about.  I kept thinking that the waiter would bring out the real box….but he didnt….so I just put my lasanga in that.  haha….

Well thats all I’ve got for now….now it’s back to homework….whoohoo!  Hopefully this week won’t go as fast as this past one did………..
