About Me:

My name is Steph, and I am a senior Marketing major with a Communication Studies minor. Since this is my last year at Butler, my main goal is to enjoy every moment that I have left, while doing as much as humanly possible. I am a marketing analyst at the Butler Business Accelerator, a Speakers Lab tutor, and a Butler blogger (obviously). I also am an Alpha Phi, the President of the Butler University Student Foundation, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (a professional business fraternity), and a member of the Butler American Marketing Association. In the small amount of free time that I do have, I love crafting, watching large amounts of television, and enjoying my favorite comfort foods, like sweet tea.

The winter that never really was…

Every year since I came to Butler, each winter has been rather similar.  We might get a little bit of snow before Christmas (usually the week before finals, or during finals), but the most snow and winter-y weather always comes after we return from Winter Break.  Each year it snows during Recruitment…so much that I am usually glad that I don’t have to go anywhere for the entire week, because then I don’t need to dig out my car.  Then after Recruitment we get at least one more big snow, whether it is a Snowpocalypse level snowstorm or a snowstorm that gives us about a foot of snow – that keeps me from carrying on my life like normal for a day or two.  And of course…in between the bigger amounts of snow we always have light dustings, or mini-snowstorms.

This year, however, has been completely different…and I don’t like it.  We haven’t had any large amounts of snow, I’ve only had to use my ice scraper twice, and I’ve never pulled out my de-icer.  I am extremely disappointed in this winter…and because of that, I am declaring that the winter isn’t officially over yet.  So, Mother Nature…this is your time to step it up and give Indiana what we love – crazy weather patterns.  I would prefer for us not to have a snow storm before/during Spring Break…because I couldn’t live with myself if I missed it.  I looked at my schedule, and decided that I could fit a snowstorm in on March 20, beginning at 8 p.m.  I also might be able to squeeze it in on March 6, at the same time.  I love the element of surprise though, so be sure, Mother Nature, to not listen too well.  Just try to keep these dates and my schedule in the back of your mind – because I would really appreciate it.  Thanks, Mother Nature!

Campus – after a light dusting of snow earlier this semester

2011 Year in Review: January – July

Since tomorrow is the last day of 2011, and since it was a pretty big year in my life, I thought I would close out 2011 with a Year in Review.  I’ll be breaking the series down into January-June, my sister’s wedding, and July-December…so here we go!

Recruitment

During Recruitment 2011 (and throughout the entire Fall semester beforehand), I put away my sorority letters to be a recruitment counselor for freshmen girls.  This meant that I didn’t have any contact with my house during the week, and that I spent every day making sure that the ladies in my group knew what was going on, and helping them figure out what was the right decision for them.  Even though it was a tough week, it was so worth it to see a different side of recruitment, and most of all – to be reunited with my sorority sisters on Bid Day.  Last January Alpha Phi welcomed 41 beautiful ladies into our sisterhood as well…so it was an absolutely awesome week!

Snowpocalypse

In late January/early February of last year, Snowpocalypse hit Indiana.  We had about a foot of ice/snow, and didn’t have classes for two days…so it was heaven for all of us.  We lounged around our house, watched movies, did absolutely no homework, and loved every minute of it.  Of course, it was a truly scary world outside of the house…people were in serious wrecks and it was hazardous to even walk around campus (it would have been easier to ice skate), but we put all of those worries aside and just enjoyed ourselves.  Those two snow days were most definitely two of my favorite days of school…ever!

March Madness/Final Four/National Championship

Even though Butler didn’t end up winning the National Championship, they still had an absolutely AMAZING run.  I love that I will always be able to say that my school went to the Final Four two years in a row, especially while I was here.  And you know…if it happened again…I wouldn’t be mad.  :)   Go Dawgs!

500 Festival Princess Program

From February-May, I was fortunate enough to represent the 500 Festival as a Princess.  I had the opportunity to attend all of the 500 Festival events, do community service in the Indianapolis area and in my hometown, and to go to the Indianapolis 500 (all while wearing a beautiful tiara).  It was basically an unreal experience that I will never forget…and throughout the process I pretty much fell in love with IndyCar.  Check out all of my blogs about my time as a Princess…there are just too many good things to say!

Also…the deadline to apply for the program is rapidly approaching (January 6)…so if you are a girl attending college in Indiana and you are originally from Indiana…apply today!

Check back tomorrow for 2011 Year in Review: Wedding Edition!

A Day in the Life of Stephanie…Spring 2011 Edition

Now that we are about a month into the semester…I officially have the hang of my schedule.  It took longer than normal this semester because of Snowpocalypse….but now I think I actually understand how it all works…so I will give you a glimpse of my schedule on a random day….enjoy…

  • 8:00 a.m. – Wake up….check Twitter, Facebook, and my email….while eating breakfast.  (At my house we have a hot breakfast every morning…so this is usually french toast sticks and bacon…yum.)
  • 8:30 a.m. – Get ready for class..
  • 9:35 a.m. – Marketing Research…..
  • 11:00 a.m. – Career Planning & Development…..the COB likes to take care of us…and make sure that we know what we are doing with our lives in the future.
  • 12:15 p.m. – Lunch back at Phi…
  • 1:00 p.m. – Check my email…prep for class…and hang out at Starbucks…
  • 2:25 p.m. – Advertising & Promotion Management…basically the best class I have taken at Butler.  It is a great way to spend the afternoon if you ask me.
  • 4:00 p.m. – Work in Speakers Lab…

Hangin out in Speakers Lab....

  • 6:00 p.m. – Dinner….
  • 7:00 p.m. – BUSF meeting…
  • 8:00 p.m. – Study…
  • 9:00 p.m. – AKPsi meeting….
  • 10:00 p.m. – Study until…I fall asleep.

Basically my life is booked solid….and I rarely have time to just chill out….but I like it that way.  At the beginning of the semester when I didn’t have as much to do…I felt lost….and just sat around while I tried to decide what to do with myself.  But by being busy all the time, I make the most of my time….for instance…when I don’t have time to go to the HRC to work out…I do a workout video in my room….and watch my shows on Hulu at the same time.  This morning I caught up on the latest Desperate Housewives this way….and tomorrow I will do Grey’s Anatomy probably.

So that is a glimpse of my life…if you have any questions about student life at Butler, don’t hesitate to ask!

Snowpocalypse 2011…Day #2

Today is Snow Day #2 of Snowpocalypse 2011…and even though I have spent every moment of the past 48 hours with the same 3 people…we are somehow surviving.  This time of togetherness is great and I do love it….but with it….comes cat fights.  I know this because this is what happens when my sister, mom, and I are all stuck inside for a prolonged period of time….and it is what happened about an hour ago.

Meghan:  What are you doing on your computer over there?

Lauren:  What are you doing to be productive??

Meghan:  Did someone just give me a ‘tude?

Yes….Meghan really asked if someone gave her a “tude”.  Shortly after this exchange….Lauren and I began to make fun of Liz, since she is the only one in our room that wasn’t wearing a Snuggie.  So she started to show us everything that her blanket can do…even though it doesn’t have sleeves…and so began “Blanket Wars”.

The different ways Liz can wear her blanket....

The ways we can wear our Snuggies....

Blanket Wars got pretty heated......obviously

Other than the little cat fights and Blanket Wars….not much has been going on here in Room 13.  We cleaned our bathroom and room last night, and worked out yesterday afternoon…which is basically the extent of our productivity.  We didn’t even venture out to play with the ice/snow…although we watched one of the girls in our house, Amanda, go ice skating on our front lawn last night.  But now the snow plows are out, and it isn’t snowing/icing much anymore….so it looks like we will have class tomorrow.  Ugh.  Back to productivity and real life….unless the weather wants to get crazy again…which I am completely fine with.  But until then, I think I am going to open a book for the first time since Monday morning…..wish me luck.

Snowpocalypse 2011…Day #1

Today is a snow day here at Butler University.  For those of you who are in high school, let me explain why this is so exciting….

  • We don’t get snow days in college.
  • This is only the second time that Butler has canceled classes in like the last 20 years or something outrageous like that.
  • Imagine a day where you are snowed/iced in to the place where you live…which is with 75 of your closest friends….Yeah….it is awesome.

The only sad part about it is that we haven’t been very productive…unless you count watching 3 movies in the last 12 hours being productive….which I definitely do.  Here is a rundown of our snow day thus far….

  • We started our movie marathon last night around 11:00 p.m. with The Wedding Date, after which we were so infatuated with Dermot Mulroney that we decided to watch My Best Friend’s Wedding too.
  • This morning we rose with the sun around 11:00 a.m…
  • We sat around until noon when we went downstairs to the kitchen to get lunch….
  • Now we are watching 50 First Dates.
  • I have been creeping on blogs for most of the day…mostly The Pioneer Woman’s….and I am getting ready to order her book that goes on sale…TODAY!
  • A little while ago, Meghan (one of my roommates), did one math problem, got it wrong, and then gave up.  But, don’t worry, she did knit 5 rows last night.  (And yes, her homework for one of her classes is knitting.  It blows my mind as well.)
  • Lauren (one of my roommates) has been on Facebook all day.  But I did see her open one of her books earlier….it didn’t last long….but it did happen.
  • And the Productivity Award of Day #1 of Snowpocalypse 2011 goes to…Liz (one of my roommates) who got real crazy a little while ago…and bought a plane ticket.

Yeah…I know that you are all jealous of what we have done today.  And since we just saw that Butler will once again be closed TOMORROW….we decided that our activity for tonight will be taking photos of ourselves on Photo Booth.  The last time that the four of us all lived together, Meghan, Lauren, and I had a Photo Booth session late one night….so we are going to make that happen again.  Be sure to check back tomorrow to see the results of this awesomeness….and I will leave you now with a few of our gems from last year…

Preparing for the arrival of….Snowpocalypse 2011.

Yes.  Snowpocalypse 2011.  This is what we are all calling the blizzard/ice storm hitting Indianapolis tonight/tomorrow.  It is going to be intense….at least I think so.  Here is what we know about Snowpocalypse so far…

  1. It is predicted to bring 10-12 inches of snow and 1-2 inches of ice to Indianapolis.
  2. Butler’s administration believes the weather stations….and we DON’T HAVE CLASS TOMORROW!
  3. The outlook for Indianapolis’ weather in the next 12-24 hours looks so bleak/scary that the national news is talking about us.
  4. It was supposed to start at 7 p.m., and by 6 p.m. the freezing rain had already started coming down.  When we left Wal-Mart at 7:15 p.m., the roads were covered with a slick slush, the freezing rain was coming down significantly harder….and there was a sheet of ice already formed on my car.

So tonight, my roommates Meghan, Lauren and I went to Wal-Mart because like every other person in Indianapolis, we wanted to be prepared for the storm….you know…just in case.  The only way that I can describe the craziness of Wal-Mart is by saying that it was like Black Friday….only without good deals and Christmas.  Instead of hunting for TVs and toys, people were clearing out all the bottled water, the bread, and the flashlights.  Yeah….not that exciting….but I loved it.  I love Black Friday….and I loved the beginning of Snowpocalypse 2011.  We went into Wal-Mart, got our necessities, and then got in line.  The waiting lasted about 40-45 minutes….during which I ran around the store to find things like water, flashlights, and craisins.  We had to do this…because Wal-Mart was out of carts…and none of us had enough hands/room in our arms to get stuff like cases of water, but there is always plenty of time to get that stuff while someone is your placeholder in line!  I was enjoying the intensity of the lines at Wal-Mart so much that I even took some photos….

The line behind us....

Other carts.....

More lines....

As Snowpocalypse 2011 continues to evolve and wreak havoc on the Indianapolis area, check back to my blog for updates.  Unless of course, the ice decides to hate on all of our power lines and then we end up without power.  Keep your fingers crossed that this doesn’t happen….because I don’t think I will be able to make it.  But, I do have my Laughing Cow cheese and craisins and my flashlight thanks to that trip to Wal-Mart….so maybe I will make it.
